We used Apiguard this year on all of our colonies. We used 25g x3 due to 95 degree temps with 90% humidity. It worked well for us. Thanks for sharing.

I've just found this series. Thanks for taking the time as I know you are busy. I've been using Apivar after the Honey flow then over in winter. I decided to change it up this year with apiguard. I was a little nervous but this was very helpful.

Hi Kamon, have you tried throwing a couple of handfuls of fresh green grass on your inner covers, work with our ants here, told cinnamon also works but haven't tried that myself
@6Deep63 жыл бұрын
Thanks for doing this. Just sharing my experience with the Apiguard Thymol. I noticed they moved the brood away from the treatment container. I think that is what you are seeing here too. Unfortunately, after my second treatment - the completely absconded!!! Like you say though, there are a lot of factors to consider. Maybe it was too hot. Maybe I treated too much for the temperature . I also thought that the colony appeared much more agitated. All their calm movements were gone and they were on edge. I think in this video versus your prior video, the queen appears to exhibit that more agitated movement I am trying to explain. I don't know. I'll try it again after the summer flow in a couple months (I'm in New Zealand).

After extraction I used Apivar with mite loads at 2 per 100 in my hives. I used it for the recommended package. I removed the strips and a week later I checked mite loads. I was over five mites per 100 bees. IT's showing me the Apivar is no longer affective in killing mites. I'm putting formic acid on the colonies tomorrow because our temperatures are finally low enough to use it. I'm hoping I've caught them early enough. I'm tired of products that no longer work still being sold by the bee supply houses. Thanks for letting me vent.

No sweat when you pay good money for a product you expect it to do a good job. I haven't used apivar this year because it can't be trusted
@wishicouldspel3 жыл бұрын
Not only is "brood loss a little normal," IME its required. It's absolutely required. If your not sacrificing a few larva while using Thymol its not " hot" enough to do much good. One of my original expeiments 20 years ago with thymol killed massive amounts of brood. Much to my chagrin and total dismay originally. The long term results were fabulous. Not dismayed any longer.

What kind of dietary earth can I use around my bees
@jenniferdeghuee16153 жыл бұрын
I started using Apiguard for my summer treatment last year. In NorCal the summer temperatures fluctuate greatly and are often too high for formic pro. The other challenge with using formic pro in August is that you need to have the entrances wide open, if using a slatted rack, you need to put a spacer under the bottom box and the rack for the bees to be able to move the air. At my house, the nectar flow ends in June, robbing becomes a big problem. Which treatment method you use should be based on your local conditions. This year I did half doses for longer periods (following directions) and had great results.

Any reason you didn't just pull off the cover and put the tray right in there? That is what I do and the bees clean it out just fine. My treatment pretty much shut the queen down on two of three hives that I've treated so far. I'm sure that just adds to the effectiveness to have the brood break!
@kamonreynolds3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback Doug. I feel there isn't enough room for the tray in regards to the bees being able to get easy access. Perhaps there is but I doubt it. If there was I would totally open the tray and walk away!
@dougstucki82533 жыл бұрын
@@kamonreynolds Ahhh, that makes total sense and I should have figured that out since I use a shim in mine to make space for the tray. I also leave that on for winter to act as a spacer for sugar or fondant on the frames and emergency feed.

My Apigaurd was liquid. Small amount of gel, is that normal? It's not outdated. I spilled some liquid in frames😔. Went ahead n closed up hive. I will go check tomorrow, it's been 14 days. I hope I didn't kill all bees.

@kamonreynolds3 жыл бұрын
Pull them and extract them within a couple days. All it takes is a beetle or 2 to cause some problems. Traps keep them low but not low enough

So are the frames for human consumption out of the hive? My hives are Layens hives. Can I put tray in the bottom of the hive below the brood area?
@dougstucki82533 жыл бұрын
Thymol will give the honey a temporary smell and taste similar to Lysterine. It is still safe to eat, but may taste off. If you wait until next Spring to harvest the honey, the smell and taste will be gone and you won't notice it.

I used apiguard for the first time in July after pulling supers. Was very nervous with highs in the 90s. I did 30g on doubles and 20g on singles and nucs. I did 3 rounds 7 days apart. I had good mite reductions but it did shut the queen down. Do you think an OAV treatment at the end of the Apiguard with no capped brood would clean up whats left?

@kamonreynolds3 жыл бұрын
Hey Don, the last treatment did damage a little bit of brood but it wasn't much. Maybe as much as the alcohol wash did. Could is be where some of the gel soaked into a couple of cells below the card? Who knows. I feel good about how the colony looked. Hopefully the last video, ep.3 will yield a satisfactory alcohol wash count. ROLL TIDE!
