If people deny their own successes, we will become prisoners of stupidity. Once the world was much better than today, there was more desire, morale and strength to do something, today in the 21st century we have not progressed even a millimeter. Landing on the moon is the greatest achievement of modern man.
@olivergrumitt80335 жыл бұрын
I have been lucky enough to have met 11 of the 24 astronauts who travelled to the Moon, both those who landed and those who did not - Jim Lovell (Apollo 8, 13), Tom Stafford (Apollo 10), Gene Cernan (Apollo 10, 17), Buzz Aldrin (Apollo 11), Alan Bean (Apollo 12), Dick Gordon (Apollo 12). Fred Haise (Apollo 13), Ed Mitchell (Apollo 14), Dave Scott (Apollo 15), Al Worden (Apollo 15) and Charlie Duke (Apollo 16). These men accomplished a feat that will probably never occur again but will always remain the best engineering feat that humans will ever do. One slightly sour note about the landings was that as far as I know no plaque or memorial was placed on the Moon commemorating President Kennedy and his speeches which inspired the Americans to go to the Moon in the first place. Whatever the reasons for his decision to go to the Moon, Kennedy was more responsible then anyone else for the Apollo program, and I find it strange and sad that no memorial to him was placed on the lunar surface. It is ironic that Richard Nixon’s name was placed on the descent stages of the lunar modules, a man who had nothing to do with Apollo whatsoever and who had he beaten Kennedy in 1960 would have ensured no Moon landings would have taken place At all. I know Nixon was the President at the time of the landings but it would have been more appropriate to have put the names of Kennedy And Lyndon Johnson instead of Nixon.

This was pretty good, but it falls into the main trap that short form documentaries on the Apollo program fall into: They did not take into account the incrementation that was involved. The true American space program extends all the way back to Operation Paperclip at the end of WWII. Once the challenge of the space race was issued, the first steps were tentative, with Explorer 1, through Ham and the space chimps, to Mercury, then Gemini, then finally Apollo. It was truly the culmination of decades of constant progress, but documentaries like this one seem to imply that it sprang forth fully formed, and all that does is lend voice to the claims of the unintelligent who decry the entire thing as having never happened... To truly do justice to Apollo, you must include all that came before.

Just a question...with all the amazing features on the moon, why would NASUCKA want to land in such a desolate nothingness part area?
@apuuc5 жыл бұрын
because the mission was the first landing. They needed a rather unchallenging topography to minimize the risk to the crew. Once they knew all the systems and procedures were robust enough the landing sites on the following missions became more varied and difficult. If the last 3 missions 18, 19, 20 had not been cancelled the landing sites already chosen for those missions would have been incredible.

As a young engineering student at the time I can tell you the moon landings happened. I did project studies for launch vehicles & ion propulsion systems. Most of the hard work was already done, in a book every rocket scientist had at home & work: "Handbook of Astronautical Engineering" McGraw Hill (c) 1961, LCCC 61-7305. Within it's 1,600 pages are some of the most dense mathematical formula, graphs charts & explanations for getting the job done in designing spacecraft, propulsion systems, guidance, environment etc. It was the work of hundreds of scientific & engineering giants, and owning the book was like cheating. A young engineer could set a goal, then check the book for the best solution-path, follow the formula & graphs, and come up with a solid proposal in as little as a week, all by using a slide rule to effect the specific situation. In a practical sense we all knew the V-2 had solved all the fundamental problems of space flight, even if it was not perfect. Many engineers working on design studies understood that the V-2 was the first voyage of Columbus, already in American waters, all we had to do was get on land & plant a flag, thanks to the hard work of those who came before us. There was much hard work still to do, but you understood the goal was achievable.

Im NOT saying we havent been into space but i dont buy this landing whatsoever ,maybe just maybe we orbited if we even got that far but the STS mission that went to the outer edge of the Van Allen fully suited up 3 visors in the shuttle - all had radiation issues n had to turn back .They couldnt fucntion & operate the craft ...Id love this to be true i really would but NASA dont help themselves much really in this department ...Armstrong still a hero in my book as he was a tesst pilot ,gotta respect that ....
