Hey guys what’s happening? Niyat here with film comics explained and as voted for by everyone in the latest poll, today we’ll be exploring Apollo 18.
During the Apollo program, six crewed missions would land on the Moon collecting lunar material that was returned back to earth (with a seventh, Apollo 13, notably requiring James Lovell, John Swigert, and Fred Haise to make a tense emergency return to Earth without making it to the moon.
Throughout each of the successful missions, twelve astronauts performed a number of studies and observations that would shape our understanding of the Moon. Each of the voyages were required to explore new areas of the surface and leave behind nuclear-powered instruments that continued to send information back to Earth, long after they left.
But the Apollo program would end in December 1972 with Apollo 17. Why did that happen?
The Canadian/American production written by Brian Miller and directed by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego follows the apollo 18 mission. Through found-footage recovered from the voyage, we learn the supposed cancelled mission had actually made its way to the moon.
Nestled between an explosion of Alien movies released in 2011, including Super 8, Battle: Los Angeles, The Darkest Hour, Cowboys and Aliens, I am Number Four, Paul, and The Thing (the prequel we covered last week) Apollo 18 is a fascinating piece of revisionist history.
Taking elements from films like The Blair Witch Project and Alien, the mayhem that followed is explained as being the reason why the US abandoned any further attempts of heading back to the moon again.

what took it out from me is they called the Soviet LK lander and the dead cosmonaut as Russian. Could be wrong but when this "found footage" took place was December 1974. The astronauts were former military and certainly employees of NASA. They would of referred it as Soviet and Soviets and not Russian.

@@disbeafakename167 was your dad doing a military function or a governmental function like for example NASA and fun fact a lot of Soviet equivalent of NASA main guys and designers were German. The lander would of been called Soviet as Russia wasn't a country at that time. They would of also said "I didn't know the Soviets was here" instead of Russian's was here. Russians back during that period was just used as people that was ethnically Russian the USSR was part of present day Russia after the dissolution of the Soviet Union into many a separate countries and prior to the USSR forming you have parts of Imperial Russia or the Russian Empire that was ethnically Russian. Did the lame person use the term Russia as catch all term for the USSR? Sure BUT certainly not during a mission in NASA and DOJ like the found footage film supposed to of been.

This is my personal theory that explains not only the existence of these lunar crabs/spiders but also fills in some other gaps of this movie. These creatures are most likely not native to the Moon. These creatures probably might not even be considered actual "aliens". My theory is that these creatures were somehow actually created on Earth as a secret bio-weapon for the US government/military to use against the Soviets should they ever reach the Moon. That would explain the lack of extraterrestrial incidents or disappearances from the previous Apollo missions as these creatures did not exist yet on the moon. The US government/ military knew it was only a matter of time before the Russians landed on the Moon and so it used all the data and information it gathered from the previous Apollo lunar missions to somehow bio-engineer a small crab-like species that is able to survive on the lunar surface and camouflage itself as a moon rock but also be extremely hostile and have a certain level of intelligence. I'm guessing that this species is also able to reproduce asexually. What more than likely happened is that the US government got wind of a secret upcoming Soviet mission to the Moon and sent a sample of this new bio-weapon to the moon on the last Apollo mission before the Russians could land there and had the astronauts release it onto the Moon before departing. The crab spider species then more than likely started to propagate and multiply and possibly even evolve further on the moon. By the time the secret Russian lander finally touched down on the moon the Russian cosmonaut was taken out by this new bio-weapon. This would explain the need for the Apollo 18 mission and the secrecy behind it. The US government / military wanted to see the results of its new bio-weapon and further study it in its new environment, so it sent an expendable crew of three astronauts to complete that mission, only for everything to go wrong, and for the government/military to cover it up. And because this new hostile species has pretty much taken over the surface of the Moon that explains why we have not gone back to the Moon. But that's just my theory.

I loved the movie because it talked about the Soviets landing on the Moon. Being a Cold War history buff and a proud American, I'm happy that we beat the Soviets to the Moon. However, I would love to see a movie which would show an alternate history about the Soviets ALSO making it there, wether they made it first or if they landed after we did. The special effects of Apollo 18 really makes it looks like the surface of the Moon, even better than "First Man" did. Though the movie tanked at the box-office, I still believe it's better than most of the garbage Hollywood is shoveling out now.

There was a fifth ending where John Grey was revealed to have survived and made it back to Earth. In his debriefing, a DoD official reveals that they actually wanted Ben's body brought back to Earth - they were purposefully sent to get infected and return so they could study the Moon aliens' venom and turn it into a possible bioweapon against the Soviets, due to reports of them attempting to do the same.

Interesting factoid. Years ago I visited the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum and they had an exhibit that showed the kit that the astronauts had in the lunar module. I was quite surprised to see they had a M1911 pistol with them. So it seems that NASA was at least somewhat prepared for something freaky happening on moon landings.

A weapon was for the super-rare 'what if' they missed their landing site and somehow ended up on land with dangerous wildlife. More common with the Soviets as they routinely recovered on land where we preferred water landings. A firearm would NOT work on the airless moon.

@@itsjustme8947 Yes I realize that a weapon was most likely for a issue with wild animals in an off course reentry. My being prepared for trouble comment was more of a joke. Sorry to break it to you though but guns do work in space. This is from a science site. "Fires can't burn in the oxygen-free vacuum of space, but guns can shoot. Modern ammunition contains its own oxidizer, a chemical that will trigger the explosion of gunpowder, and thus the firing of a bullet, wherever you are in the universe. No atmospheric oxygen required."

I think they don't use the debris to purposefully camoflauge themselves. It'd make more sense that they're just dormant for such long periods that the moon dust/rock becomes coated on their carapace. Since they probably have gone millions of years without food, it'd be the only way for them to survive long enough until fresh prey arrived (though feeding on solar radiation seems more likely, they could've just been attacking out of defense of their territory and not for food).
