If this is improved animal welfare I don't want to know what it replaced.
@ximono3 жыл бұрын
@The Bushwacker I don't think the problem is that we've become too sentimental, even if we have. The problem is that industrial meat production at this scale is just incompatible with animal welfare. You're right, the slaughter house is where it gets messy. The quality of life for a chicken before ending up there is arguably more important though. A free ranging chicken that has lived out its little chicken life before having its neck snapped one day has had a better life. But that has been outsourced to farms like this for us to live our modern lives where chicken comes in the shape of clean fillets wrapped in plastic. Someone has to pay the price for commodity, and that's the chicken.
@ximono3 жыл бұрын
@The Bushwacker There's a middle ground though. There are well-run smaller organic farms where animal welfare is a priority. The meat costs more, which is only reasonable. Unfortunately, not everyone can afford that, so it's just for the select few who have enough money and enough conscience to be able to make that choice. Another alternative is to eat less meat, but try taking McNuggets away from people.. The real reason why we are where we are, is the capitalistic system. It inevitably leads to fewer, larger farms with worse animal welfare. Because that's more profitable. I'm not saying we should abandon capitalism, but there are other ways than the status quo.
@ximono3 жыл бұрын
@The Bushwacker I had no idea you had free ranging chickens. I totally agree about the flavor, there's no comparison. But you're right, it sure isn't the easiest way! I'm actually from Norway. Here we have a commercial chicken farmer that started out with free ranging. Eventually the threat of salmonella from wild birds made the government nervous, so they're back inside the barn now. But he does have a "winter garden" with natural daylight that his chickens have access to (imgur.com/a/O6KHk0R), and he keeps a slow growing breed (Ross Rowan) that is fed a home-made mix sourced locally. They get to live 60-70 days before slaughter (at 4+ pounds), twice as long as what's common in Norway. And they taste great! If you invest millions in land, buildings and equipment to run on an industrial scale, you _have_ to sacrifice animal welfare to make a profit. Instead, this guy joined forces with other relatively small organic farmers. By staying small, they can keep things simple, and by joining forces they can reach consumers in supermarkets, with branding and all, and make a decent living. That's what I was thinking of when I said there are other ways. It does cost a lot more than regular chicken meat, but like he says: "Organic chicken isn't expensive, it's all the others that are so damn cheap!" As long as there's a market for quality meat out there, it can be done. This is Norway though, which is a rich country. You know much better than me what would work in the US. Anyway, thanks for a civil conversation on KZbin for once!
@ximono3 жыл бұрын
@The Bushwacker Thanks! I grew up typing on the Internet, so my English grammar is probably better than my Norwegian 😄 Norwegian agriculture is mostly organized in co-ops. I'm a member of one myself, and wouldn't be without it. There are many benefits to the co-op model, stronger market power being the main one, like you said. For me it also means cheaper inputs (like feed), less effort (sales), less risk (investments) and more predictability. I do combine it with selling some "gourmet" products on the side locally, yielding a higher price but taking more time and effort. I get the best of both worlds, so to speak. Some think co-op is related to communism, but that's a big misunderstanding. If anything, it's democratic and meritocratic. I see it as a variant of capitalism where the profit reflects your "input" instead of your percentage of shares. The result is a higher income than in a market where everyone competes against eachother. It's far from perfect, but "stronger together" sure beats "every man for himself" IMO. The trend here has been towards more LLCs in agriculture with fewer, larger farms. I think that's worrying, both for the livelihood and rights of farmers and for the nation's self-sufficiency. But I don't think co-ops are under threat just yet. They are known to be very resilient, often growing during hard times when others fail. Sometimes I think we need another crisis to make people see the benefits of having co-ops again! Sorry for such a long answer, but I too think it's interesting to talk with other people about these things. There's always something we can learn from one another. I've learned a ton from watching Americans on KZbin myself :)
