Ludwig van Beethoven
Symphony no. 5 in C Minor, 3rd and 4th movements
Jeannette Sorrell, conductor
APOLLO'S FIRE | The Cleveland Baroque Orchestra
on period instruments
From the concert "Beethoven the Revolutionary," performed April 29, 2017
First Baptist Church, Cleveland, Ohio
In this performance, Ms. Sorrell seeks to evoke the revolutionary spirit and impetuous sense of timing which was described by witnesses who attended Beethoven's own performances. As a performer, Beethoven was known for pushing forward (accelerating) during a crescendo, and slowing down when the music got softer. This is described in many accounts by Viennese music-writers of the time.
