Another reason that Southern Baptists tend to have been baptized more than once is because SBC churches don’t recognize sprinkling baptisms. So anyone who wants to be a member of a SBC church who previously belonged to a church that sprinkled has to be re-baptized via immersion. That said I’m glad that other people have noticed the SBC obsession with rededication.
@TGuard00014
@TGuard00014 2 жыл бұрын
@Norman Fisk Because they consider it a part of the public testimony that they require of all people to become members of the church. They think the experience of immersion is incredibly important for it’s symbolic significance and see it as an important step in obedience as well as a covenant with the church family which is important for someone who is going to vote on church matters or be eligible for ministry positions within the church. I was baptized as a Methodist via sprinkling after moving to a different state my husband and I started attending a SBC church and in order to become a full church member I had to be immersed. My husband had been baptized via immersion previously. Having experienced both I have to say that while I believe the sprinkling is sufficient the immersion was a far more emotional and impactful action.

@@TGuard00014 the sbc I attended a long time ago wanted a copy of my W2 after I was baptized in to the church. A tragic turn of events happened directly after that and I never went back. Nothing to do with the church but I was curious if it was common practice for a church to require your W2?
@TGuard00014
@TGuard00014 2 жыл бұрын
@@jelly7310 No I’ve never heard of being asked for a W-2. We do background checks on anyone who works with kids but that’s a requirement of our insurance company and at the advice of our lawyer. And the only things they are looking for are sexual crimes or crimes involving children. Drug possession might require some explaining or close supervision but it’s not disqualifying. Because of how the SBC works there is a lot of flexibility with details of how individual churches run their congregation. Also they don’t keep a very close eye on various congregations (because that’s not the point) so a church might get away with violating some of the church doctrine as long as no one complained. My assumption is they were trying to verify that you were tithing appropriately because I have heard of churches doing that, just never a SBC church. Seems like that would be a good time to find a different church. The SBC Baptist Faith and Message which is theoretically a guiding document of what all SBC believe for instance says that believers should contribute regularly monetarily but it doesn’t specify how much or anything like that so a church probably wouldn’t get kicked out for requiring W2s but also isn’t required to show a certain amount of offerings etc. SBC churches also tend to be less orderly or rigid in describing their beliefs than many other denominations. So theoretically all SBC churches believe the things stated in the Faith and Message, but there’s not a single copy in our entire church, and I bet less than 50% of people at our church have read it. We have church bylaws defining marriage as a union between one man and one woman which is certainly a belief held by us but the only reason it’s in writing is for legal reasons. Our church doesn’t require baptism or proof of it to partake in communion so people visiting from other churches are free to do so which is a direct violation of the Faith and Message. It’s never been said out loud in the church that women can’t be pastors but that is in the Faith and Message and we abide by it. So it’s all very loose and pretty independent.

In his explanation of the 1Peter verses, Dr White explains that we shouldn’t stop at the part “Baptism now saves you” because it continues that it is an appeal for a good conscience and that can only happen if you already possess the gift of eternal life thru faith in Christ. In other words, you must be saved first. However, Dr. White neglected to explain, why then, the verse even says that Baptism now saves you. It would appear that there is an error in the verse. Can anyone explain why the Bible would make this claim if there is no salvation attached to Baptism?
@lewisbeeman
@lewisbeeman 2 жыл бұрын
There is no explanation. That is because you can look throughout the Bible and God used water to save his people. Matter of a fact, if it isn’t for water, you will die. And God made our bodies perfectly, and even our perfect body requires water to live. But, the Baptist would have you believe that scriptures that point you to irrefutable scripture that ties baptism to salvation are simply wrong.
@oracleoftroy
@oracleoftroy 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I think that is a big weakness of my Baptist brothers, even my Reformed Baptist brothers. The Westminster Confession has this to say 27.2 "There is in every sacrament a spiritual relation, or sacramental union, between the sign and the thing signified; whence it comes to pass that the names and effects of the one are attributed to the other." In other words, the Bible uses the term "Baptism" interchangeably between the water ceremony and the things signified by that ceremony, such as regeneration. In passages like 1 Peter 3, it is clear that there is more in view than the mere water ceremony and act of getting wet, but that is included and can't be separated from it. The washing of baptism isn't the fulfilment of the promise of salvation, but the promises of salvation are given in the sign of baptism. Sadly, the London Baptist confession completely removes this section.

Dr. White Dr. Flowers says that he does not see what you are saying in his only place of input, that which is written. He does not have ears to hear what the Spirit is saying. All his insistence on the necessity of faith for salvation ignore the necessity of ears to hear being before faith. @Norman Fisk “Faith is what we obey, we, of course, must hear it first, Rom 10:17 So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. I don't invent faith, God already did that. How can I hear and obey my own "faith"?” Ephesians 2:8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Saving faith is “your own” but not until God, the Father of Jesus Christ, has given your “new creature” “ears to hear” first. The above sequence is the proof of, “regeneration precedes faith”. I am forever praising and believing Jesus is the Christ, and this is pleasing to God.

Based on Luke 3:16, and John 1:33, and Acts 11:15-16, the most important thing about the word "baptize" in the New Testament has nothing to do with water. The Holy Spirit is the master teacher promised to New Covenant believers in Jeremiah 31:34, and John 14:26, and is found fulfilled in Ephesians 1:13, and 1 John 2:27. Unfortunately, many modern Christians see water when they read the word "baptize" in the text. Based on the above, what is the one baptism of our faith found in the passage below? How many times is the word "Spirit" found in the passage, and how many times is the word "water" found in the passage? Eph 4:1 I therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you that ye walk worthy of the vocation wherewith ye are called, Eph 4:2 With all lowliness and meekness, with longsuffering, forbearing one another in love; Eph 4:3 Endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Thank you for doing this! It really is all about understanding the New Covenant! My husband became more of a baptismal regenerationlist (similar to confessional Lutheran or high Anglican). Drives me nuts. I've also interacted with some CoC people on this subject. They are so stuck on certain phrases rather than carefully examining the immediate and larger context. I hate sacrementalism - I have yet to see it NOT draw someone into minimizing faith - although they usually don't realize it at all.

Grace +Faith= Salvation What most alleged Christians gets so wrong is what kind of faith is the saving faith? There are different types of faith according to scripture. No arguing there for anyone to make. John 3:36 speaks of DISOBEDIENCE, and even Moses was disobedient to God for striking the rock instead of talking to it, Scripture reveals Moses was punished for disbelief! That proves disobeying commands = disbelief/lack of faith. Saving faith can ONLY be the obedient faith. Not this denominational mentally accepting Jesus as your Savior, ask Jesus into your heart kind of nonsense. You must believe by obeying, it's 2 parts that actually equals saving faith. Baptism is the only way anyone ever became a Christian. Not before.

@Scribeintheink faith is literally trusting God. Like when Abraham trusted God when he traveled to a new land. When Moses trusted God and built a large floating wooden ark to survive a flood which never happened previously. When the Hebrews trusted God and marched around Jericho in order that the walls would fall down. Go read Hebrews chapter 11, it will show you just how wrong your idea is about what faith is. Because your reply is so far off. Whoever taught you that is a liar because it contradicts the scriptures.

Im kinda confused at the obvious inconsistency. Every sermon he makes it quite abundantly clear that baptism requires full immersion. In his refutation of the CoC belief of 1 Peter (to be honest this is the first time I've ever heard anyone make the claim its their go-to verse) he continues to read on ans discusses the reference to Noah. But....he makes the claim that baptism also kept the boat afloat and saved Noah. So how can baptism be full immersion and at the same time preventing immersion. Or is someone reading doctrine into Scripture instead of pulling doctrine out.
@lancelewis3368
@lancelewis3368 2 жыл бұрын
The whole context of Peter is the act of baptism saves you not by washing dirt of your body, but by a clear conscience towards God through the resurrection, Peter is not teaching baptism is for a clear conscience has nothing to do with what you do when you get water baptized. That’s to event a nonsensical connection with the term and the reference to Noah. Waters of Noah washed away the body of wicked men. Bsptism washes away the body of sin giving us a clear slate or conscience with God. Peter would’ve been a silly person to bring all that up and basically teaching people being baptized does nothing. This is the same man who told people to save yourselves from this untoward generation showing them being baptized would seperate them from the WORLD OF sin. Amazing how baptists mess that scripture up

@@punkaj82 the baptism topic embodies this perfectly. If you read the scripture, you will see God save his people, time and time again through the use of water. He created water, and he created us. Yet we can’t live without water. There are countless parallels. There is specific scripture that ties baptism to salvation. Yet here we are. People still want to argue about it instead of just submitting to it. Just imagine if that was the approach of those in Acts 2. I can see it now the says “Ok, I know you said repent and be baptized, but this whole repentance thing is going to be really hard and take a lot of effort, that really seems like you want us to work for our salvation, how about you just dunk us in some water and we call it a day”. 🤦🏼‍♂️

"Baptism, which corresponds to this, now saves you, *not as a removal of dirt from the body* but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to him." It seems to me Peter is explicitly distancing himself from the idea that the mere water washing ceremony is what is doing the saving. I agree with you in that I think Baptists minimize much of what the Bible says about the sacraments, but I think the historic Reformed and Lutheran position is much closer to Biblical teaching than the Roman or Eastern church position.

More irrational false dichotomies, Mr. Gardner. What does Peter say? "Repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins."
