Apoorva Gokhale: Raag Jaunpuri

Apoorva Gokhale was the featured artiste representing the Gwalior gharana at the FEA-curated LEGACY concert. Her third piece of the morning session was a traditional composition in Raag Jaunpuri and ended with an intricate tarana.
Apoorva was accompanied by Swapnil Bhise on tabla and Anant Joshi on harmonium. Tanpura and vocal support were provided by her students Soumya Ullal-Kantak and Amritha Shenoy-Kamath.

I have heard various of her raags on youtube. Chhayanat, Kedar, Puriya etc. All of them are well performed. But this Jaunpuri has been delivered with great mastery. The laykari is creative and taankriyas are very engrossing. Splendid performance.

Jaunpuri with a slightly different flavour than most of the other Jaunpuris out there :) . Apoorva Tai's usage of the 'andolita Dhaivat' and direct 'Shadaj to Dhaivat' movement, especially in the upper octave brings in shades of Darbari. Expertly executed! Her rendition is pure Gwalior, one not heard quite so much these days. No wonder, given her 'taalim' and 'parampara'. May God bless her with a long life and career. Well on her way to become a legend.
