@@deutschermichel5807Eugene had buck teeth, and fought for the von Habsburgs, who are (though not at the time of Eugene) famous for their large chins. That’s what he was getting at.

very little is said about his grandiose victories against the Ottomans, the pacification of Hungary after the Kurutz rebellion that ended with the peace treaty of Sathmár 1711. His successful repopulation program in the newly aquired territories especially Banat, the integration of Transylvania into the realm. With the loss of Spain the Habsburgs reoriented towards the East and Charles VI. laid the foundation of what has later become the K.u.K. monarchie, that shaped central-eastern Europe for two centuries. The Habsburg lands until his days have always been a collection of disjointed possessions. Charles VI. started to build a territorial state (Flächenstaat), with a functioning bureaucracy in all regions. P.S.: I am happy that the Ostende thing failed and Austria did not have overseas colonies, was not involved in the slave trade and did later not participate in the run for Africa. The forming Austro-Hungarian lands would not have profited from that in any way. Maybe for the Belgians it was a loss, but they had their ugly share of bloody colonialism later, after the Habsburgs.

This was not a deliberate reorientation to the east, it was a retraction and diminution. Charles was no Hadrian to Joseph's Trajan. Rather Charles had forfeited his own dreams in Spain, and his brother's dreams in Italy. Maria Theresa was responsible for the consolidation of the Danubian monarchy - and from a position of acute weakness inherited from Charles VI. As for his "grandiose victories" these were Eugene's victories which were reversed when Eugene faded from the spotlight as stated. The Hungarian question was settled before the death of Joseph I. Your theory (and preference) on Ostend is alternative history. For closing Ostend, Charles gained the English as an ally. What did that alliance bring his poor daughter? the humiliation of Fontenoy!

@@ApostolicMajesty true, it was not deliberate, like you described (like with the unrealistic idea of focussing on Italy). I just wanted to mention that Charles VI. has a quite positive reputation in Austrian historiography, but you gave me a new perspective with your more global view. Thank you for that.
