This one brings back a lot of old memories for me. I grew up in the 80s and my dad lived in the Gap. Us kids would see him some weekends and a week or so in the summer. We would walk down the road to the Iron furnace and play in the creek. We had many adventures in that little old town. I remember the old road over the mountain very well. It was scary at times. Especially in bad weather. We lived in Middlesboro but attended church in Virginia and didn't miss a service. If the doors were open, mom had us there. A lot of people around here aren't fond of the tunnel but it has saved many lives. That old mountain road took several lives every year. It was heartbreaking hearing story after story of all the accidents that happened up there when I was growing up. Still, these mountains are apart of me and who I am. I've traveled all over the place and lived in several states but I'm back home now and there's no place like it.

I love Cumberland Gap. My parents are from Middleboro KY and I remember growing up going up the old road into Middleboro. I was in the 6th grade at Middleboro Middle School in 1986 when construction was going on for the tunnel. Many years later I remember going back to drive through the tunnel. I had moved to Knoxville many years before that. I remember my dads family(Givens) was having a family reunion in 1990 or 91. There was also a beautiful confederate style wedding going on in town.i remember watching them ride horses down through the town. They had 100 or more people involved. It was so long ago.ive lost a lot of the memories I had of it. Id love to see footage of that some day.im sure its in old Town photos & info. It was a huge thing. There is or was an old pharmacy & soda shop my dad's aunt Ruby owned. I remember getting some fudge from there. I'm so glad to have found this channel. It has brought back so many memories. My father passed 4 yrs ago... RIP Dad Charles Givens ❤

Donnie, our mom & dad took us to cumberland gap when we were children. Back then they had a pony ride across the street. At the falls, my sister fell into the water & almost got swept over the falls. There were two young boys there & they grabbed her & caught her, she almost died. I do remember the rocks being very slippery there, which caused me not to want to go in, I was afraid I might fall or something. I figure that little boy was probably terrified as he couldn't stop the bike. Thank you for the story! (I think I was about twelve & my sister was ten years old.)
