Now, I’m no expert in any of these things, but I know what I enjoy. Research and Learning are at the top of my list. I will be delving into one aspect of Magic, Witchcraft, Folklore, Myth and/or Legend in each article.
So, if you are so inclined, join me on this journey of discovery!
The people who have called The Appalachian Mountains their home over the centuries and beyond are a mish-mash of the Native American Indian tribes - Shawnee, Cherokee, Creek and Delaware, just to name a few. Added in later were settlers from Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and more. When you mix in all of these different peoples. cultures and traditions - not to mention adding in ancient lore of the people brought in as Slaves - and blood, sweat, tears and deaths of those just trying to carve out a little niche in the world, you come up with the recipe for some powerful beliefs, magics, healing practices and downright scary - sometimes - ‘wise ones’..
I’ve run across the term ‘Granny Magic’ in several different articles and websites, and really get a kick out of the term. However, I feel it’s not really accurate since gender isn’t really the heart of the practitioners these days. But the traditions are definitely passed down from great-grandparents, grandparents, and on down the line. The Ancients and Ancestors are key elements of the rootwork, healings, conjurings and so on.

I live smack in the middle of the Appalachians in West by God Virginia. This place really is almost heaven. My family converted to Pentecostal during the revivals but forgot to hide all their folk magic roots...thankfully! You can still see the blue and green bottles in the trees out here from our Grannies scaring away the bad spirits. I'm thankful more younger generations are reviving the family traditions of the mountain folk. And my great grandma lived to be over 100 also and still drank a fifth of Jack a day and smoked 2 packs of non filters a day. I love hearing all the stories of the mountain magic and mayhem. Greatly appreciate you all sharing.

I’m also from West Virginia, my grandpa was a Pentecostal preacher and my other set of grandparents owned a beer joint. The church and tavern were in walking distance of each other. I never realized the bottles were for that, it’s interesting.

I'm glad I found your channel, how interesting to say the least. Wonderful back history and has brought a little light to my background and my lineage. My mother's side of our family was Cherokee and Blackfoot and my father's was Welsh/Irish. Such a wonderful thing to hear from other that their ancestral history is not that far off from mine. Great video thanks for sharing this.

The hornets nest thing you were talking about, those can be used to curse people as well...but obviously she was using them for healing purposes. 😉💗

You may never see this, but my family still collects hornet nest. We gather them in the winter when the bees are gone.

Being from the South (GA, my Father's people as well) and my Mom's people from TN, I have always know that for every ailment and disease that afflicts mankind, the cure could be found in nature. At least it used to be. So many varieties of plants have been destroyed by "progress". It's shameful. If you've never seen the movie Medicine Man starring Sean Connery, I highly recommend it.~APRIL LIPKE

Jen is from Berea, KY. Denise isn't from Kentucky at all. Sorry that this show rambled so much. I have another planned and will make sure it's more than someone just showing off on air. Now for the date...
