I got this because I’m a girl and anyone in my family who bought me DS games as a gift would never buy me Mario stuff- but I was super happy with this game! I think maybe it’s purpose was to make it to the audience of young girls whose parents would most likely buy them this game instead of a Mario game. Getting to kick a bunch of enemies butts as Peach was entirely new to me, and it made me want to dress up as her for Halloween that year. I still love the OST with the full reprise of Parry’s Backstory song being my favorite. The game is more similar to a Yoshi’s Island game which I think features a lot more creative puzzles and abilities than a typical Mario game. (Also I’m not entirely sure, but I think using Peach’s emotions as powers was like… because Bowser was using the Scepter to throw everyone’s emotions out of wack, except Peach who had strong enough control over her emotions to not be affected by it. I *think* that was the game’s reason but I’m not sure, my point being that I don’t think it was really misogynistic) I’ll always appreciate that I was one of the few people who played this game as a kid.
@hanat9116 Жыл бұрын
Agreed, I don't think it was misogynistic either. Even the final koopa guard poking fun at Peach for making it this far. The same thing could've been said if it was Luigi so there's that too.

It’s a bit misogynic in that it’s a…VERY common trope to make women’s powers (if they have them) be Emotion Based. But it’s not the same as “women soooo hysterical~” since like. She uses it on her terms. It’s just tonedeaf. Like, if they just gave her elemental powers vs adding in the Emotions aspect? No big deal!
@lucasmartinez5703 Жыл бұрын
I'd argue that it's not misogynistic at all since Peach (a woman who's gender makes her the "more emotional one") was the only one who had control of her emotions enough to save her hero and her kingdom mostly under her own power. Proving that she can save the day just like Mario often does. It made Peach cooler and more independent. Far from misogynistic.
@cosmefulanito6854 Жыл бұрын
I don't think it was intentionally misogynistic, but I do think it was just a little bit. I mean, I find it logical to assume that Peach's powers being her emotions, rather than because "girls are emotional", it was because it looked cute, and that would have been much more accepted by the players than the usual princess in distress suddenly being as strong as the ones who have to save her every other game. So, like, I think calling it misogyny would be going a bit too far because it wasn't meant to be harmful (probably), but there is a bit of sexism in there anyway. Further than that, I'm the kind of person who doesn't mind that kind of stuff as long as the game is fun

0:16 - about the “made her fight with her uncontrolled emotions” actually she’s the only one with control of her emotions in the entire game. The story states that everyone in the mushroom kingdom lost control of their emotions and because of that everything went to shit. Princess peach then, being the only one that can actually control her emotions (that even translates to gameplay, since you can literally choose the emotion you want at any given time) has to then fight her way through all of this to fix the situation. The marketing for this game also stated that she’s in complete control of her emotions and that’s why she can change it at any time. So it’s not being sexist, the game is trying to do the exact opposite and say that the “powerful woman has control”

Like the game shows her guards all unable to control their emotions at all, and Peach here is still in perfect control and able to use the amplified emotions to save Mario and everything else. Like, yeah you can make it misogynistic if you ignore the actual story entirely. They used emotion for her powers because that's just in line with the game itself. Like how the Vibe Scepter affects emotions, the only person seemingly unaffected by it is the princess who has perfect control of her emotions

I think an argument can be made both ways about the power set in this game. Yes, Peach uses her ~womanly emotions~ to save the day, but also Peach turns her EMOTIONS into WEAPONS and that’s still badass in my book. Also, Bowser and his minions are dealing with the exact same uncontrollable emotions so they’re technically on equal footing and Peach still wins in the end.
@prw56 Жыл бұрын
I think about it like this, the negative stereotypes for dudes get to show in games all the time, dumb, angry, and/or aggressive characters are all over the place. What the heck is so wrong about having the same kind of thing for negative female stereotypes too?

It would also explain why Bowser puts her in a cage and never uses rope cause if she wanted she could burn that stuff with a thought.

And with that comment you have missed the point entirely. Her total control over these wild emotions, to the point where she can freely flip between crying and getting mad in the blink of an eye, and use all of these to help progress the quest? This here is very much a useful power in itself when all the enemies except Bowser are stuck in just one single emotion. this game has gotten a lot of love recently and 8-year-old me (and 25-year-old me) feels incredibly validated. i can only hope that the explosion of this game in online circles helps to persuade Nintendo to make a remake or sequel but i doubt it :( it really deserves it though. fun fact: this is the ONLY Mario spin-off title to NOT receive a sequel. also i know the whole joke is "haha woman fight with uncontrolled emotions" but the whole point of the game is that she is the only one who _can_ control her emotions and none of the enemies can. like i get it, i get how the initial premise of the game comes off, but as i diehard fan of this game for 15+ years, i can confidently say it's not misogynistic. EDIT: speedrunners of this game have actually figured out a way to reach the final boss without 100%-ing it.

The Lost Woods are actually a bad comparison for the the old "guess the right exit or be sent back to the start" - riddle, since you don't have to brute-force them. The music of the area gets louder when you are near the right exit, they are not about memorization.

@MK-qj2dj10 ай бұрын
@@gigakid3 The first one in the NES game had a solution besides brute-forcing it as well, you could pay a NPC who would tell you the correct order. They would also be a bad example in this context, since you are not supposed to be brute-forcing them either, which is the game design Alpharad is critizising. Since he did use OOT in his video, this is a moot point anyway. Even if another Zelda game had a section called Lost Woods that relied purely on brute-forcing the problem, as long as OOT is shown in the video, it doesn't matter, the wrong comparison stands.
