The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the large intestine. While its exact function is not entirely clear, it is believed to play a role in the immune system, specifically in the maturation of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cell involved in immune responses. However, it's not considered essential for human survival, as people can live normally after its removal, a procedure known as an appendectomy. Despite its potential immune function, the appendix is most commonly known for its susceptibility to inflammation, a condition called appendicitis, which can be a medical emergency if left untreated.
