Okay! Point one from Sal is good: Appetizers waste you for dinner. Enh, and Q has a good point too about how appetizers can (often) be cooked faster than mains so it's a quicker way to enjoy food while chatting with your friends. After that... honestly, no other points from either guy really weighed for me. (Although it's funny to hear Q try to shame Sal into capitulation, by asserting that Sal is being a "sucker for upselling and advertising". More of a psychologically manipulative approach than an argument, but fair play I guess! if there are no real rules.) I realized my own reason for my own choice is what it really comes down to: I need to taste something sweet to signal my brain that mealtime is over. It's Pavlovian or whatever, but in my childhood home there was dessert (and weren't appetizers), so I think that pattern is just ingrained; a meal ends with dessert (even a piece of fruit) and now my body doesn't think we're done eating until I eat at least a piece of fruit. So I appreciate dessert on a different level than I appreciate appetizers, even though once I learned about appetizers in restaurants I loved them too. Curious how people will vote in the poll. I FEEL like the majority must come down on the side of dessert because appetizers+main are too samesies, whereas main+dessert gives you range. But we'll see! Wow! I'm actually interested in that result. I think it's down to how people interpret the question to be honest. Like if people were interpreting this as "What if you could never have an appetizer again" or "What if you could never have a dessert again"? Would people really forego the sweet stuff entirely? Savory would still be covered by the main. Well, this has been my novel to the internet for some reason.
