Apple 27” Thunderbolt Display Power Supply Burning Smell Issue **Solved!**

Replaced the power supply in a Apple 27” Thunderbolt Display because there was a strong burning smell coming from it. Recently replaced mine and wanted to share how it went. Hopefully this helps some people as it seems quite a few are having this problem as these displays are getting up in years.
Recently picked up a Apple 27” Thunderbolt Display that Apple sold from 2010 to 2015 used off Facebook Marketplace. It powered on and seemed to work fine before I purchased it. However, as soon as I hook it up at home, I noticed a strong burning smell coming from it as soon as the power cord is plugged in. After doing some google searches I noticed that most people agreed it had to be the power supply. I replaced mine and discuss it in this video.

just got one second hand for $125 and of course the guy didn't mention the smell. Feel like I'm gonna get cancer every time I use my computer.

Yep! Those bastards. Almost exact same thing happened to me. If it’s worth it to ya and you feel like you can do it spend the $100. Even after it won’t be 💯 gone for a while but it’ll be much better. Highly recommend putting an air purifier next to it even after. I did and it helps with any remaining lingering smell. Good luck.

How has the power supply been so far? Still holding up?

Yes, it’s been great now. I will tell you that it took a while for that burning smell to completely completely leave the system. I don’t know if it was just embedded inside the case or what, but took about a month or so to fully be gone. I also have an air purifier near it so if it’s still giving off any kind of odor or chemical smell, air purifier, just eats it right up so that also helps I’m sure but the replacement power supply is holding up great and haven’t had any issues with it.
