Your second sentence is incorrect. You need to be careful with absolutes like "always" and "never". It is ok to hit another person in self defense. For example, if a criminal is attacking you or your family with murderous intent.

In Texas, he can get a college degree in prison! I believe in educating people to get their high school diplomas. But they have the ability to acquire college degrees! I toured a newly built prison while I was in college. Another girl and I were complaining about it, saying we would commit a crime so we could get a college education. The guard leading the tour said, "oh, but you have to be watched peeing and all!" He was shocked when we said that was a small price to pay for college, cheaper than what we were paying. 🤬

I wonder what led to the stepson's mom ditching him with the dad instead of when she left she took her son with her? Maybe he had behavior issues back then too but who knows. Be a kick to the gut if stepson managed to run into his bio mom at some point & she made it clear she wanted nothing to do with the son nor his dad. Stepson not only is understandable to reunite with his bio mom but he destroyed the only chance he had at having a mother figure in his life by committing crimes against OP & burning the bridge she tried to build. The dad deserves some punishment too. Yeah he's not the one assaulting/stealing from OP but he also did nothing about his son's behavior & let the idiot end up where he is now. Sure the guy is struggling with debt, lost a place to stay & lost his wife but he could use some more punishment for allowing things to get to this point. Something tells me he's going to have to deal with his son living with him after the son gets out of juvie. Probably has to help find the son a job or will end up having to support his son. The son likely also isn't too happy about how his dad never told him the truth. Probably also blames the dad for not doing something when it's also the son's fault.
