To be honest I will probably just give my rabbit (when it arrives) to my 2 young daughters and see how they get on with it as I really don’t want them to have iPhones anytime soon so hopefully they will get to enjoy the benefits of AI without the use of a phone and all the addictive qualities that come with the device

I remember thinking at the time, if the idea behind the Rabbit got popular, it was going to get replicated on smartphones and smartwatches, which more or less kills the Rabbit, because giving the choice, most of us would rather use a device that we already own.

Yeah and technically AI hasn't even been invented yet. We just have Neural Networks, Pattern Recognition, Expert Systems, and LLMs. However, Apple ~is~ first at achieving the "critical mass" needed for "AI thermonuclear productivity": Device Context > NPU > OS > APP integrations. This is the fourfold requirement for functional productivity in the upcoming 'arms race' for useful so-called "AI"

@Äpple-pie-5k
@Äpple-pie-5k 3 ай бұрын
@@Ishaheennabi No, Google lacks vertical integration to the NPU on device. In addition, the OS doesn't supply API's for App integrations. So in other words you have Device Context and hard-coded OS-level stuff, or in other words, 1 out of 4. No "Private Cloud Compute", unless you count Google privately collecting your data and using it in ways you don't know, as private, LOL. Your comment about OpenAI is for external services (off device), showing you fail to understand what I said, or how those 4 elements are literally the holy grail for functional personal AI.

apple has always made its mark by being first to market - not with an innovation, but with a product that makes that innovation relevant and desirable. They've never liked to show their working. The problem with that approach in AI is that the innovations are coming so thick and fast that you can't just wait until everything is mature enough to turn into a polished product.

Well said but on the other hand, in AI you get bugs, fiascos, dramas, politics, consumer backlash, and a minefield of other issues. Look at MS Recall. So far Apple is walking the tightrope correctly here, but they will have to keep moving and moving quickly with each dangerous step. You also failed to analyse the competitors. Next steps in the AI arms race need seamless Device Context > NPU > OS > APP integrations. This *automatically * disqualifies everyone in the space except for Google on Android devices. Keep in mind that Google/Android has 0% of desktop/laptop market share and a business model of data collection and data sales, with no appreciable revenue source from hardware sales. This doesn't play well into the 1984-phobia consumers have about all their private context data going into the cloud and being sold and traded among advertisers, large corporations, and governments.

On device actions look nice, but you cannot get away from the energy required to do all this compute. My guess most of it is done in their cloud, otherwise your phone battery will last maybe an hour.... and good luck if you don't have internet connection, think there may be some issues for offline use or severely limited feature set.

Astute observation. For someone constantly using AI, it's going to be a battery drain... BUT look at the typical use case. Someone using the AI ten or even sixty times per day is still only a fraction of the battery load from playing a game for 20 minutes. The on-device NPU is rather efficient, pulling less wattage than even the so-called "efficiency cores". I see potential power-hogging coming from getting higher performance with "pre-fetching" and "pre-processing" of "personal context" -- that is, working under the hood to have all your context ready to serve answers faster. I don't know the implementation but this could be improved by having it do this stuff while the device is plugged in and charging. This kinda thing also slows you down if you're doing other tasks, so likely it will favour doing it while you're idle also.

@Äpple-pie-5k
@Äpple-pie-5k 3 ай бұрын
No one else in the AI industry has offered third party independent auditing of the servers. Or even dreamed of offering it. If you're familiar with how info circulates in the tech industry, devs and hackers discover and leak info that filters down ultimately into dumbed-down consumer news outlets and tweets circulating around, which become scandals and pushbacks that require big tech to change course. The words are chosen carefully here in full knowledge of how that works, to put Apple in the most winning and trusted position it can, in spite of social media layperson commentators will always post their conspiracies about it. The lack of understanding from laypeople and the "proper" paranoia about AI, come together to make AI a true marketing minefield. In spite of Apple getting well out in front of this, we see reactions like yours showing how truly dangerous it is. Because you can't explain highly technical solutions to paranoid conspiratorial laypeople, and getting out in front can actually create negative pushback. Whereas Google silently zips their mouth, gets no pushback, and continues to know more about you than even the NSA and CIA do.

I don't believe that language will play the main role in the use of AI in everyday life. For obvious reasons. I believe much more that communication will be very asymmetrical, almost exclusively from AI to the user. The little communication that still takes place from the user to the AI will be less complex, perhaps a lot of multiple choice. I can imagine that the interface of the future will be a combination of eye tracking, facial expression recognition, gesture recognition and brain interfaces. like a friend with whom you understand each other without words.

So basically you're thinking that something that takes 25x more effort than something Linux has never done, will be done, AND somehow get enough venture capital to do it. Basically that's exactly what I expected from Apple. Utilizing the device and its ecosystem for their AI (semantic index and app intents). I agree with Matt that they didn't go far enough with the voice interaction. I guess we will be able to use Siri to activate the voice chat of the ChatGPT app or any other AI client app through their intents. I also extremely wondered why Apple's AI doesn't utilize the camera to explain what you point it at. It looks like AI can interpret the contents of the screen, maybe that's a workaround when having the camera open but why didn't they demo it then? If such functionality is missing, it's a huge missed opportunity. Probably it could be solved with app intents and 3rd party AI apps or shortcuts.

@Äpple-pie-5k
@Äpple-pie-5k 3 ай бұрын
Incorrect. You just had a cognitive failure. MS Recall has no vertical integration to the NPU and chips, nor to the third party apps. Thus, it's forced to literally "screenshot spy" on you AND process those screenshots in the background, sucking performance from your own tasks. This, coming from a company that has had multiple scandals telemetry/spying and user data collection, and from a company that makes nearly ZERO % of its revenue from hardware, thus is obligated to find ways to make its dollars from data. Your data. Compare that to the Apple formula: "Device Context > NPU > OS > APP integrations", with every layer of the system having private handshaking and trust protocols to allow NONE of your private data to leak. Do you think Microsoft has anything like "Private Cloud Compute"? Can you dream and hope that in even a million years that Microsoft would allow its privacy-spying servers to be audited for privacy and security by third-party auditors? That's like hoping for a wolf to switch to a vegan diet. You correctly noticed a cognitive similarity. Both need and use "DEVICE CONTEXT". All AI in the future, in order to be of any use at all, will need device context. And both Recall and Siri need it and use it. But the similarity stops there.

However, i don’t think the dream of finding emails or documents in your Mac or iPhone will work as good. Because it needs to be built in RAG for semantic search, which still will require too much time to find the document/email you are looking for. I know they are getting better but still.

Apple doesn't innovate.... they barely even acquire what they do. They copy in a safe way. This is Apple being apple. They are given Chatgpt and its like they are saying "uhhh... ok.... we will do the stuff everyone else can do.". This is an absolute waste of technology giving Chatgpt to apple. This is a huge "meh"... There was nothing here that made me excited. The fact that Apple... one of the biggest companies in the world.... didn't even attempt to create it's own AI model is honestly confusing. Absolutely ridiculous.

I appreciate what you said about Steve Jobs "rolling over in his grave." Apple has been very successful in developing its own software and hardware infrastructure. I'm mystified that they haven't made SIRI a more robust AI tool to manage user experience. Of course, that may be coming, and these partnerships are merely a stop-gap measure on that path.

Apple talking about on edge AI being on the phone and not the cloud was not a direct shot at OpenAI. It was an important distinction designed to gain peoples trust which Google had a lot of pushback on with their new Chromebooks. Later they had to admit that they will still need to use the cloud anyway for most AI tasks. This is a safety failure and a big loosing blow to Apple who like to do everything in house. Apple just let the OpenAI/Microsoft Trojan horse through the front gate of their digital walled garden. Apple just lost the first round of the corporate AI wars.

I think, the integration of AI into Apple devices has more risks, than simple sharing personal data in the cloud. With the tight integration of AI and the execution of actions Apple could control the user in his behavior. I think this is even more dangerous, than sharing personal data! So be careful! When using Apple devices you will loose more and more the control over your device.
@Äpple-pie-5k
@Äpple-pie-5k 3 ай бұрын
How so? Personal data in the cloud can literally be used for identity theft, provides enough information for AI or hostile actors to "deep fake" you, and so on. On the other hand, using AI on-device is a voluntary step that you execute. When it doesn't do what you want, you stop using it, then you buy another product that DOES work. Thus, the Apple Way has always been to give its users MORE control over what they're doing. Now you're going to say something like "Huh? Apple only just now let you change your home screen or customize this or that." If you say that, you're confused about what "control" really means. This is often confused with the "guard rails" meant to keep UI/UX simple and to disallow certain risks to security, or needless on-device customizations that interfere with customer support or that customize the device into being "unusable" when handed off to a friend or co-worker. Steve Jobs correctly knew that letting 3% of people customize their home screen into something ugly was much less important than every time you hand your device to someone else, they are immediately familiar with how to use it comfortably, and trust how to use it. I can't even say how many times I've been handed an Android device from someone and had to pause and wonder at all the UI customizations that made it alien and unusable. Don't confuse this kind of clean integration control, with someone ACTUALLY controlling your device and not letting you do your actionable tasks. Those are two entirely different things. The purpose of Apple Intelligence is to OPTIMIZE your control over your device, to speed up and streamline your EFFICIENT control of the device. On a device that is currently the ONLY brand to achieve privacy and security requirements for the modern information age. I can only hope other companies learn from Apple and we can get more competition in this space that fulfills even the most basic requirements of "customer first, privacy and security first." That would be good for all of us. But for now, people who aren't ignorant about what's happening in the Information Technology industry, do feel controlled and forced to go with Apple because anything else is literally privacy- and security-suicide!

Apple always follow the same pattern. They are always late to new tech and they always find a way to make their customers have to buy new hardware in order to use their out-of-date take on the new tech. Then repeat, meaning when even newer tech comes out, they will get their customers to have to buy more new hardware if they want to use Apple's lesser version of that new tech lol.

The whole “toolification” of AI is nonsense. Apple, Google and Microsoft have yet to show an interesting use case. When it comes to intelligent tasks, we want to do them ourselves and not hire anyone. Not even AI. It's different for an entrepreneur. They naturally want to replace employees with AI. But Apple has always been a private consumer company. In the private sector, AI is only about one thing: The lifelong friend and conversation partner that can compete socially with humans. Sam Altman may have just understood that. But big tech is still asleep here.

"Apple Intelligence" is the most cringe-worthy phrase I have ever seen. For a company like Apple to speak about AI as if they invented it (not mentioned that could be the last big company to show up on AI) is incredibly misleading and unprofessional. "Apple Intelligence" sounds more like a candidate applying for an internship at the company’s most undesirable position rather than a serious technological advancement. The name lacks professionalism and appears fanboyish.

If the other open AI models (ChatGPT, etc.) can find a way to provide relevant information to the user with privacy protocols on their own that are as robust as what Apple is doing (such as third party inspections to insure they are implementing what they claim, as Apple says) than I’m all for the open competition that would result. Maybe one day they will. But for now Apple seems to be the only one that leads with their constant emphasis on how secure their privacy implementation is. I’m cool with that.

I don't think you put 2+2 together but that's fine. Overwhelm excites paranoia about Big Tech and Big Brother. Apple is sliding into this slowly while getting the 4 key ingredients lined up for competition smashing functionality. If you put 2+2 together you know it's 4. Vertical integration of the four elements of the "Manhattan Project" for absolute AI dominance: Device Context > NPU > OS > APP integrations. Apple as the only and uniquely positioned company in the space to take advantage of it. For industry insiders in the AI space, we are AB-SO-LUTE-LY OVERwhelmed by what this means, as no one else has this in an ecosystemic context. Not even close.

Personally, I think that even though Apple has come in late in the day they will still win the AI race. Microsoft and Google can spend as much money as they want but they will still run on the train of mishaps as they have done with hardware and software over the years. AI is the tech. You still need humans to embed and Apple has that talent better than anyone. If someone will compete or go toe to toe with Apple it will most likely be someone like Nvidia.

Integrating AI into the OS to understand you, is the stupidest thing Apple intends to do. It may work for the person who has no friends and relies on their phone as a “friend” who understands them! Maybe a date coach. Two people on a date could let AI determine if they are a match, since their phones know them better than themselves. Oh! It may offer the person some therapy! I wonder who were the geniuses who thought of this.

They can't punch back. They have to zip the lips and be ultra-quiet hoping to avoid comparisons and scandals about the fact they are literally the ANTITHESIS of private-AI computing. They make zero on hardware sales and as a C-corp are legally obligated to their shareholders to maximize profits from SELLING YOUR PRIVATE PERSONAL DATA. They are hamstrung and literally cannot punch back. They are in a catch-22 where they would betray their own shareholders if they used private cloud compute and private on-device contexting. The only way they're not cooked is to be ultra- ultra- quiet and somehow get a merger/alliance into a partnership that gets them "Device Context > NPU > OS > APP integrations" across multiple devices, not just an Android phone.

Most of the things in the announcement were pretty straightforward but there is one thing I think is pretty interesting - intents. I think it might be big payoff making an interface specifically for AI models. That will be much more effective and less resource intensive than having the model trying to read the screen as an image. But on the other hand, if it doesn't get enough support from developers it might just be annoying that the actions won't work well on a lot of apps.
