And the people I've known who say they are struggling, always have enough beer, cigarettes and tattoos galore. Not to mention they eat better food than I can afford because they get food stamps and so forth. I've actually seen parents at stores with beer, cigarettes and steak tell their kids they can't have any candy because they can't afford it.

Vet tech here. I’ve actually seen/heard the same exact thing when we ask people why they didn’t pay $25-65 (special rate) at local shelters/agencies to get their beloved pets spayed/neutered. My own sister did the same thing and on payday brought back a full size bottle of pricey Jack Daniels and $65 (no joke. I saw the receipt) worth of chips, snacks, & soda and then proceeded to order takeout pizza & wings (not exactly cheap) but didn’t have money to get her cat fixed. 🙄

Down side for US, it can be considered giving them permission to use the car by leaving the keys like that. Even leaving them in the car is considered permission. And if white it is called indentured servitude, not slavery, so people can pretend it isn't slavery still.
