Apple Broke iPhone 13 Screen Repairs

Apple has been chipping away at iPhone repair work outside their control for years now, but with new changes to the iPhone 13, they may be aiming to shatter the market completely. The new iPhone 13 completely disables Face ID functionality when you replace its screen. One of the most common phone repairs that could once be done with hand tools now requires a microscope. This means you won't be able to fix your iPhone screen yourself without seriously stepping up your repair game, or sacrificing the functionality of your device.
Update 11/9/2021
Apple told The Verge that they will "release a software update that doesn't require you to transfer the microcontroller to keep Face ID working after a screen swap." We are ... a little shocked. Clearly this was not a security issue at all! Just another move against independent repair that they're backing down from, or a bug that they never bothered to test for.
Update 12/22/2021
We are happy to report that Apple followed through with their word and as of iOS 15.2, screen swaps do not break Face ID. You can read more about the update and our findings here: www.ifixit.com/News/56386/ios...

I don't think people understand how important it is to force companies to allow an OWNER to repair their OWN devices, tools, etc. Laws have to be enforced to avoid this kind of anti-consumer practices.
@curly7985

The thing is that most people don’t really care about repairing it themselves or using a small repair shop and would send it to apple anyways even if it was an easier replacement. I think a lot of people will just pay the extra $200 or $10 per month for apple care and get $30 screen replacements. The right to repair movement is such a minority compared to the total iPhone customers.

I feel like Apple should be paying a fee for every iPhone that gets thrown away after too short of a time. A phone that costs 1500$ should last in the market for at least 5 or 6 years, even if its just a cheap handydown device after that time. If you don't want people repairing devices then you should be paying for the environmental damage and waste of resources.

I would love a hybrid solution. Apple should instead of disabling features like Face ID, True Tone, Camera itself should have a section under settings which should show that battery or display or camera has been replaced. This will not only give users a choice to get devices repaired without disabling features but also inform users who buy second hand iPhones about the true value of the phone they are purchasing.

This guy is very transparent and being very honest wen he mentioned roasting 2 displays. Honestly it’s not an easy job to replace that ic if you don’t know your hot air and distance from your gun to the component. This is indeed a very delicate job. First and foremost one need to remove the under-fill by keeping a metal shield below the reborn to avoid roasting the display. Finally activate the weapon to remove the ic. Apple is full of nonsense and right to repair will have a say to their monopoly strategy on mobile accesories.

If a 1500$ phone can’t last for atleast 4 years then it’s a shame on the company producing those phones. I bought an iPhone se2 just for the sake of the software and if i cannot get replacement parts then its a bloody shame

It is not and never was an error, just like Error 53 with iPhone 5S wasn't one either. It's not like a developer just dropped a line of code in there by mistake that Face ID doesn't work, you HAVE to want to do it for it to happen. People have been sleeping on this for YEARS and don't realize the full consequences of this. They're slowly but surely taking away the concept of property and laughing right under our nose by pleading "It's for security !". What little reaction and backlash those actions by Apple created over the years made me cynical over the fact people don't care and will realize too late what happened.

I don’t know if anyone has said it, but what’s worse here is the global audience. There isn’t a Apple store in 90% of the world. Service then boils down to mailing phones to the states? Not being DIY is bad enough but this is a whole different level of issue. I stopped recommending new MacBooks for 6 years now, I guess it’s time to find a decent non-iWatch smartwatch to go Android? At least parts availability there is mostly problematic because of the nuances of fragmentation but this? This is insane. Screens will break. They always do. What’s the real option cause an Apple store visit isn’t a real one.

I think most shops are going to go with Apple certification, or changing careers. Only large chains are going to even have a chance at the first option.
