Make 20 gallons of cider an hour with a simple washing machine conversion that takes less than 45 minutes! It's been a productive year for us on the ol' homestead. lundkids.blogsp...

If you wanted to stretch your apples a little further. You could take the pulp that is in your basket and bring it to a low boil for a few minutes and then run the hot pulp through a kitchen aid juice strainer. This would give you some really good applesauce. After you run it through the juicer you will have a small amount of apple juice and a little more pulp. The final pulp could then be fed to your livestock.
@therealandrewlund11 жыл бұрын
That would be a nice way to use up more of the apples, but you would need to add sugar back into the sauce as most of it comes out in the juice. Since we're not big fans of processed sugar and other sweeteners cost so much, we just suck up the losses and dedicate whole apples to sauce. We use our maple sap boiling pan and do 20 gallon batches.

How do you properly clean between the inner and outer tub. Will just running the machine do the cleaning?

No way, I don’t think you could ever get a washing machine clean enough

I should really make an update video... My "new" machine has been in use for nearly 10 years, and we've made over a thousand gallons of juice with it. I modified it so the basket can be removed easily for a deep-clean, and all the unnecessary bits have been removed.

How did you clean the drum from the soap residue before making the cider? Thank you very much
@ohhowhappygardener9 жыл бұрын
That's resourceful! Lol... I'd be wary of using a machine that's been used for laundry when you could by a cheap one as a dedicated cider maker.
@JohnLundOfficial2 жыл бұрын
that's an idea, but there may be other disadvantages to a new machine. First of all, the plastic hoses and internal components aren't necessarily 'food grade', so a new machine might be more at risk to leach nasty BPAs and whatnot. 2nd, the computery new machines are kind of a pain to program, and might not be as convenient to simply put on the 'spin' cycle and let'r rip. The machine in the video actually conked out after 2 years because of the computer. We replaced it with a nice clean old maytag, and it's been working great for nearly a decade. Probably made over 1000 gallons with it by now.

the drain tubes in a washer have ridges that collect debris and unsanitary dirt in the recesses. also, are you all aware that washing detergent is toxic. that will also collect in the ridges. not a good idea. you will never be able to rinse all the gunk out of the innards of the washing machine.
@therealandrewlund9 жыл бұрын
+troy stevens Yeah, it wouldn't hurt to swap out the corrugated hose for something smooth and food-grade, though it might be hard to find something in that diameter.

@paulbagshaw7237 Жыл бұрын
Raise it up on some pallets, install a drain petcock in the bottom of the tub, so you can bypass the pump and corrugated hoses etc (where all the residues will collect). I would also have a barrel with clean tap water to soak apples in to remove residues off of the apple skin from airborne contaminants (bird poop, auto exhaust, industrial pollutants). Great build and repurposing! :-)

many years ago [ 1965 ] i caught maybe 5 gal bucket of herring tillamook ore. had an old maytag ringer washer in shop, i put the fish in and water run thru agitaor cycle and lo and behold no scales left on fish clean up was a little messy, but saved tons hand work scaling the little buggers, not recomended to wash cloths in after that

With a proper pressing, you could probably extract a bit more from what the washer didn't get.
@TudorFencing5 жыл бұрын
To be more sanitary you could buy a cheap new washer and hook up a food grade hose to it. The cool thing about this is that once you are done making your cider for the day you could hook up the water inlets and it could self-clean itself.
@GeoffreySkinner7 жыл бұрын
I did this when I was college with pretty much the same design in order to produce enough juice to make hard cider (we usually just used a hand press to make enough sweet cider to throw in the freezer). Worked great and was hilarious. The resulting hard cider was barely OK, but we had a lot of fun in the process (and it did taste better if you drank enough of it). I don't think it was the most sanitary operation and I would definitely be a bit more careful now. OTOH, nobody got sick, so I guess things weren't too bad. Thanks for posting! Brings back great memories.

I think I'd be buying a cheap new washer and not be using one that's been used for laundry. If you've ever taken apart a washer completely including the pump you'll already know it's disgusting with hair, lint, skin and other material that won't come out no matter how much you rinse if it's not opened up. Gross

It's a Kenmore Oasis, but I don't actually recommend it, unless you can get it for $25... Better off with something not computerized. Ideally, you want a large basket with small holes and a fast spin..

If you make your own industrial juicer, make sure you take a video and send me the link! We just made another machine.. The old one had electronic problems to begin with (why we got it for $20), and something finally blew on the circuit board after hundreds of gallons of cider. The "new" machine is actually an older model, and it's so nice being able to set it to "spin" and immediately go to town without waiting for the stupid pre-programmed cycle.. Apples are in full swing now!

Thanks for getting me started. I did make a few modifications for anyone else trying this. By screwing half of the screws in through the plate and the other half with the heads sticking up at the same level (about 3/8-1/2 in.) the apples were pulverized much better. I also have the machine set up so with 2 bolts, you can remove the drum and plate for cleaning.

Omg! I was born on an apple farm, but am the eldest child of the 5th of 6 kids. And my grandfather’s farm was a hobby farm and largely out of production. My uncle got a notion to get the long unused cider press working when I was about 3. It was an early-mid 20th century washing machine. My mother and I collected apples and came and made apple cider with my uncle. I have very vague memories of this.

a way you could fix the gap and the larger chunks is to make the feed tube longer but put shims under the tube and as the basket lowers you take out the shims so the tube lowers

Ah, we've got pretty tough guts.. After drinking a couple hundred gallons of the stuff with no problems, I think we're okay. Pasteurizing might not be a bad idea in some cases, though. Especially if you want to preserve the sweet flavor, as natural yeast will turn it hard in a matter of days. Leave you caps loose if you don't want cider bombs sitting around!

You should maybe only go two thirds full and then clean it out., because those big junks cut your yield way down. You could cut the front of the washing machine out and then cut the drum so you could open it up and clean it out. It does make it better making the juice and crushing the apples at the same time.

I'm fairly confident that the bleach rinses would take care of bacteria, but my biggest concern is contamination from non-food grade plastics and/or detergent residue. However, the juice is exposed for only a short time, and we've now made over 1000 gallons (on our second washer..maybe I should do an update video?). There is nothing detectable in the flavor, and I'm pretty sure there are worse chemicals in the crap you buy from the store. I was quoted $4k for a lab analysis, so it's going to remain conjecture unless someone wants to sponsor me.

Heck no ! Ever take apart a washer drum or a pump ? Pubic hair, skin residue, soap scum & buildup, slime filled with bacteria. Doesn't just rinse out. Don't be a tight wad, buy a new washer
