Yeah, John Deere is the absolute worst for this. Imagine a farmer can be out in their fields, bringing in the harvest before the rains come and destroy it, then their combine stops and refuses to continue to run because the air filter is at its rated end-of-life. Fine. So they go into town, get a new filter and slap it in there. Simplest job in the world. But then the combine won't start because the combine's computer didn't get the okay from a certified technician with the magic laptop. Not the end of the world, you call the service center to get a technician to the middle of your field ASAP. Tough luck, they don't have an appointment for three weeks. Meanwhile you have eight million dollars in soybeans that are going to be ruined by the rain that's forecast for three days from now. So now you're staring bankruptcy in the face because John Deere wants their service center to get that sweet sweet on-site service call fee anytime you touch ANYTHING on the combine that you allegedly own. John Deere has literally ruined hundreds of farmers' lives with their anti-repair policy. Hundreds more have now learned how to hack Ukrainian firmware onto their tractors so that they can perform any kind of maintenance or repair themselves. The executives at John Deere are vile, evil people who should spend the rest of their lives in prison for what they have done.

This is also a good reason to go "open source" on hardware and software. Open source stuff tends to be better documented and easier to repair. Hell, it goes well beyond just reparability - how much waste has been generated simply from the sudden decision to universally regard disc-based storage as obsolete trash? It's why Linus keeps these rants firmly contained to WAN where relatively few people will come across them compared to his main channel videos, he understands perfectly well that the fundamental nature of what he's complaining about is what keeps his bread buttered. Here’s the thing about military equipment. They have the parts because that was part of the buying contract (in most cases). The problem comes from the labor time that it takes to repair/replace critical failure components. Due to the manufacturer’s design, these components are in hard to get to spots or hidden behind other components which take time to take off. An addition problem is by the time the contract expires, the manufacturers sometimes discard their tooling to make many of the parts, since they initially created a huge backlog and the military ended up breaking those parts more often than what the manufacturer anticipated. With no tooling and the military offering not enough money to recreate said tooling then the military runs into a parts issue.

Yes and no. There is a three-way tradeoff with incandescent bulbs between lifespan, light quality, and energy efficiency. Yes, you can make a lightbulb that will last literally forever. But the light will be orange and it will draw ungodly amounts of power to keep it lit. Take traffic signal bulbs as an example - their lifespan is more than three times that of a household bulb, but they consume 200 watts to put out as much light as a 40 watt desktop bulb. The place that consumer bulbs ended up at by the end of their era was a pretty optimal tradeoff between those factors.

You can't fight or change the government unless you're a lobbist backed with millions of dollars. Playing devil's advocate here, with the way technology is advancing and getting cheaper, right to repair isn't going to matter because there are many people WANT to upgrade their phone ever 1-3 years. This isn't a problem if you're a PC enthusiast because your tower gaming PC is easy to work on and you wouldn't buy a gaming laptop if you care about upgrading the CPU/GPU. Besides, most people don't keep their PC/laptop for more than 8-10 years before the platform is obsolete.

@@Shorty15c4007 I believe that we live in a very historical time, especially someone my age who was there at the beginning. We need to change our governments. We are all losing our personal freedoms. The right to repair goes so much further than the person saying I can’t fix that I will just buy a new one. It affects the parts manufacturers, the service company, and many others. You are in effect killing jobs, and putting all the power into the hands of a few big corporations who don’t care about the customers. Apple was just sued for using a inferior ribbon cables in laptops that connected the display. They knew that the cable was defective, but kept putting it in the laptops. This makes no good business sense. I have worked in manufacturing for IBM many years ago we would get revisions everyday, that made the products better and more reliable. Today no one cares about the customers. Years ago if you made a product as bad as Apple, General Motors, John Deere and Boeing you would be out of business. It is because they belong to the governments old boys club, they get a slap on the wrist and move to screw the next group of people. This has to stop. The government as we know it is very defective. Time to fix the governments and then the companies. Today’s governments do not serve the people they rule the people as they always did. Time to change this. The people have the numbers on their sides. Time for real capitalism to take over and show them how to treat the customers correctly. I blame all of us for letting it get this far. My Girlfriends car is a 2009 Kia. If the car has a bad ignition not only do you need to buy the part ( of course) it is recommended to have the kia dealership install it. Once it's installed the car still will not start. You must have it at the dealership to have the keys sync'd to the car so the ignition will start. This means it's better to have the car dealership do it because if you install the ignition in your driveway like we did. The car will have to be towed to the dealership. In our case was many miles away. Thankfully we had insurance that covered the towing. Kia than charges over $150 to sync the keys so you can drive your car. Any other or older car would allow you drive to the nearest auto parts store, buy the new ignition, install it as it's really easy and you can start it immediately and no need to sync. Many cars have options that allow you sync keys yourself. Like a Honda 2003. This is anti-consumer at its best. It is not OK regardless if it means oh its more secure. Bullshit there are ways around it.

@LMG Clips, I work at an Autobody shop in the united states. I can say I can personally get any Tesla parts. The issue with Tesla is their shop program. In order to be able to get all the parts you have to become Tesla certified, just like any other car manufacturer. They require a lot of start up money for both the classes and equipment. Now I will add that the certification only is required for structural components or the main battery components. Nothing else. My shop is not Tesla certified, but we work on Tesla's because we have gotten into their shop program in order to get access to all the other parts, (bumpers, doors, lights, sensors, glass). It's unfortunate there are no shops in your area willing to do repair one as by me there are about 20 or 30 since I'm withing an hour of new york city. I'm in full support of right to repair and having companies be required to have replacement parts available, but I don't think Tesla is to at fault for their lack of efforts, they are a new car manufacturer, who are "high" end compared to a Honda or Toyota, with an expensive certification process at the price of a Porsche. So it puts body shops and repair shops that aren't Tesla themselves to get involved. Since most people don't personally repair their cars after an accident, it puts a lot of weight on shops to be able to do the repairs. And I can say even in my area, it's not financially worth spending the money for the certification, as not that many Teslas really get into heavy accidents due to the lack of overall volume. So, yes they definitely need to get the parts availability for consumers as anyone can go to any other car dealership and order any parts they want (that don't need a certificate) and it's really difficult for someone to get Tesla parts. It's unfortunate no one near you could help out, but for Tesla they have a two part issue that one part isn't on them, auto repair shops have to see the financial opportunity from the certification for them to actually get it. Like I said, they are new. Give it a couple more years and the rest of the auto repair industry will catch up. Cut me some slack, my software is still from 2004. Anyways, thanks for the clip! Enjoy your day!

That is going to happen with, or without any right to repair initiatives. Bubba is gonna mess with X product here no matter what. What stopping end users, or 3rd party repair shops from repairing does is worse. It may drive people to try to bubba their item. If repairing something necessary, like your car, is too expensive, they will not do it, or find a "hack" way. Dealers tend to be far more expensive than the 3rd party repair shops, and if one cant afford the 3rd party, no way they can afford the dealer. Mind you this is all with very open information, and parts(Excluding Tesla). If there were no 3rd party shops, and dealers never sold parts, it would be worse. Not only all the people who work on their own cars now cant, but 3rd party shops are all closed. How can you repair suspension if no one supplies any new parts, what salvage from a junkyard? All the customers that repaired at 3rd party shops are now in the "nature finds a way" camp on car repairs. Even with shops offering discount services, tires, ect. there are still people on the road 10k over the last oil change, on bald tires, leaking oil, damaged/broken suspension parts, ect. These things can cause death, or injury to random people on the road, and the vehicle. Now imagine how bad it would be if, you could only get parts installed at dealer labor rate. The person buying used tires simply cant afford that. The person who goes to Honest Joes repair shop, is very likely not able to afford to double or more, the cost of a needed safety critical repair. Also consider how this mostly is argued by people who own repair shops. Or have the knowledge, experience, and tools to do almost everything required. We have customers who come in to buy everything from new short blocks, to internals to diffs. There are people out there who absolutely know what they are doing, and saving thousands doing it. The issue is the manufacturers are making it harder on purpose. Like apple using multiple types of screws, with novel screw heads, when other manufacturers are using standard ones(philips, torix, ect). Apple and Tesla refuse to sell parts. Samsung and BMW will sell you anything(www.samsungparts.com/Default.aspx). You can walk up to a BMW dealer and buy new battery cells for your i3. Then you can use AllData or other knowlege base to find repair instructions on how to do the repair. You can even buy the BMW software from them to do the repair the same as the dealer certified tech... Tesla.... youre kinda screwed, as Linus pointed out. No one can fix your battery, as you cant buy any new parts. Speaking as someone in the automotive repair industry, right to repair is literally my job. Without access to parts we would have to close up shop. Without AllData, we would not be able to diagnose why X vehicle is having an issue, and turn away the single mom with inop headlights. We would not be able to offer repairs at a cost people living close to pay-check to pay-check could afford. I get it, the idea of not allowing people to hurt themselves is noble. But eliminating any end user repair, or 3rd party repair support would cause far more harm that it is preventing. Most people do not randomly decide, ah yess today is the day I make a 10mW cb laser, then burn their retinas off. Some idiot will try that, with or without any right to repair. Now its just more dangerous, and prevents 3rd party professionals to have a job.

There is no reason why Apple gets to act differently than all of their competitors, or similar markets. Or design products to "brick" if repaired. If Ford did what apple does, there would be riots.

@@timothydoyle9635 actually you don’t. You actually can’t modify your car if you want to drive it on the road it still has to pass regulations. Also there’s a difference between food and drink and electronics. Context is important.

I would choose my current microwave over any new microwave, buttons always wins vs touch controls when it comes to simple appliances, same with using a tablet to control the AC or radio in a car, just use a switch, it takes up less space and it doesnt mean that everything stops working if the screen dies.

I really isn't that hard or dangerous. Just discharge all the capacitors properly with a suitable resistor and make sure the shielding envelope is decently intact when you reassemble it. They really are simple machines. And Louis' concern about giving his family cancer is quaint but wrong. Microwave radiation is non-ionizing, so it can't give you cancer. It will cook your flesh like it does food, or give you cataracts, but in either case it will hurt like hell long before it actually does any harm.

Just repaired my fridge today. Water dispenser would stick on and keep dumping water. Sometimes I was able to flick the handle or shut it off in time, others my cup would overfill and water would go all over the place. I had enough, popped trim pieces off, took off some screws, and found the problem was a $3 microswitch. The manufacturer only sells the whole dispenser assembly for $162. My dad even had a compatible switch laying around, so I was able to repair it for free!

I am an electronics technician and we are seeing manufacturers redesign a common off the shelf product, like a variable frequency drive, so they can pop their name on it and make it proprietary. Now we can’t even get the resources to t-shoot and repair the item. They End up in the trash and we’re forced to buy their brand of proprietary drive to get the CNC back up and running. It’s slowly getting worse at more companies catch on to this shady practice. Profit is fun!

I used to repair a lot of stuff for people who just could not afford new devices, in those times I could just exchange a resistor, capacitor or Diode and they would be off with like 10-20€, now everything is incorporated in a singlechip or multiple single chips, which are not soldered anymore but glued, meaning that I needed to get hotter to desolder that stuff and usually destroy the mainboard by doing so, this way I got forced to replace the whole mainboard making it cost like just under the price of a new one, so I gave up on fixing stuff, because people looked at me like I was the money hog, like I was the bad guy, so I told them the truth, I can't fix it without changing the whole device practically (the rest is just a case and the buttons and maybe a battery), it still breaks my heart thinking back at that old couple who couldn't afford a new VCR and I could not fix it at a reasonable price, it broke their hearts not being able to watch their grandchildren's videos anymore. It sucked so I gave up where Louis is still fighting the good fight, I miss those days, the days where I was the smart guy fixing all the stuff for a few bucks, being respected ad befriended, greed has made that history and that is a sad thing

The blame also falls on the consumers as well. If the companies are making shitty products STOP BUYING THEM. Companies react to the market behaviour. Don't encourage this behaviour and You don't need the latest iPhone or the Latest Macbook. Dont stand in line because its an honor to buy their products they should be the one's standing in line making their case to buy their products
@aytacofx3 жыл бұрын
I guess you have a point. Don't buy anything from these companies, and these same companies will almost certianly scramble to figure out what went wrong with their sales. IMO it might only work with new product launches, but hey, it can't hurt to try to make a difference.

Right when you win the right to access the hardware you need to do the repairs there will be software changes to make you unable to use your device without some sort of validation from the company.

I'm all for right to repair by 2nd or 3rd party (1st = manufacturers, 2nd = owner, 3rd = repair centre)... However does this mean that manufacturers have to supply spare parts or divulge intellectual property, e.g. chemical composition of paint for Tesla, or schematics of spare parts for iPhone, to be made by 3rd party manufacturing companies. How much of the product should be available? Enough to make a new product from scratch? For example an iPhone 6, you can buy practically every part except a logic board aftermarket, not made by Apple, and make yourself a new iPhone sans working fingerprint ID.

The problem starts when software and hardware manufacturers have legal ground to REQUIRE us to agree to THEIR terms to be able to use the devices and programs that we BUY from them. You can't even use a phone to make a call if you don't accept those terms before. Planned obsolescence is a thing and they'll mess up with the hardware to compensate for this. They might get pissed off right now and "take the loss" (as if they were losing anything), then make devices with more and more components programmed to fail after a certain amount of usage.

i hate that we buy and throw away so much and not much repairs
@victorbaez86733 жыл бұрын
It is definitely unfortunate. Most people dont care enough to get things fixed and just end up buying something new. Its a mindset of product obsolescence that is very hard to break and very bad in general for the environment, especially when these devices aren't even recycled properly.
