Just to confirm, Surface pro is a 2 in 1 laptop, we cant really compare with an Ipad, as we can run anything on a surface pro windows, and not on an Ipad. plus you said ssd is un removable...completely wrong. Ram is unremovable for sure, but ssd very easy to swap to another one. but thanks for the review.

In my opinion, the iPad is a great tablet but not a good laptop, and the surface pro is a great laptop but not a good tablet.

Not really. It is very good touch compatible and many apps recognize if you are touch or pc mode. Plus WSL and WSA are working fully fine and have no real problem running android and linux application. It is superior to an ipad as tablet by a mile.(except for M4, more like M3 competitor). Ipad is very bad tablet. So much limited. With surface throwing it so hard in app compatibility. Only slight inconvenience is with switching apps.

@ I think it depends on your perspective. I see a tablet more as an accessory mobile device, not a computer replacement. In the decade or so that that Surface Pro has existed I don’t think I’ve ever seen anyone have one without a keyboard. Why does that matter? Because to me, as soon as you need to add a keyboard and a mouse/touch pad to a tablet, you might as well be using a laptop. That’s what the Surface Pro was built for. It’s a laptop in the form factor of a tablet. The iPad is the opposite. It was designed to just be a tablet; a device that excels at content consumption, web browsing, and light productivity, like emails, note taking, and reading/annotating documents. I feel that it struggles when you add a keyboard to it and try to use it as a full computer, just as the Surface is too cumbersome when you take away the keyboard and use it just as I’ve described above.

I'm gonna switch from a Surface pro 8 to an iPad pro m4. I got the comparison due to a close friend of mine having an iPad and I'd say the iPad is better for a tablet usage (e.g. for students, taking notes, scanning documents etc.), since it has the better apps (GoodNotes, Procreate...) and the Surface is better for a more laptop like usage (e.g. for teachers creating presentations or doing that whole office stuff) since it runs on windows.

As both a Pro 5, iPad Pro (2020) and Pro 11 user, I guess I can support your statement. The iPad is great for note taking, watching videos and so on. It is not that great for more advanced productivity. iPad Pro is really held back by the software, as it in theory could run full on Mac software with great performance. For me the Pro 5 didn't have good enough performance and battery, and the iPad Pro had bad software. In the end I returned to the Pro 11 and I'm loving it. But I'm sure the iPad will be a good fit for the stuff you are using it for :)

Don't go with ipad pro. It's overkill for the tasks you said you're gonna do with ipad pro. M4 chip is a beast for sure, but ipad OS is a cage to leash the beast. You don't have such productivity with ipad os, just go with ipad air or just normal ipad.

just something to consider, but rear facing cameras on devices like this are important for field work. I know in construction, it can be very useful for work flow to be able to simply take a picture from the tablet

I love the surface pro and go series, accept the battery life historically. When a 5g consumer model drops, I'm in.

I think the bezels are to allow you to hold the device in portrait without touching the display. My personal complaint about the device is the palm rejection. I am constantly getting accidental inputs when using it in landscape to watch videos.

Here's the thing. I use IOS. Everything I work on is apple. So, how would one incorporate Windows? Is there a 'pick up' option? How would I continue work from Windows to Apple? Id like to have at least one Window's device but I don't want it to collect dust as everything is connected via Apple.

It's bright enough. Apple advertises 1000nits with 1600 peak. But they are using mini LED display. This is either OLED or IPS depending on X plus or X Elite chip. And light reflections prevent clear viewing so you need matte textured screen protector. In which case this is perfectly bright enough.

@@christianr.5868 true. But there are arguments that the M4 is better in terms of performance which it is but it’s still limited from its OS. My angle really is the windows can give tablet like functionality but it’s also a full computer

@@CallMeKJOS yeah the m4 is definitely better, but it’s held back by Apple unfortunately. They won’t allow programs like blender on it because it’s open source, you can’t run any of the major game engines on it. And let’s say you wanted to emulate older games. Well, even though the m4 is more powerful, its performance in emulators is nothing compared to the snapdragon because more powerful 3D emulators for systems like the Wii and ps2 need something called JiT to run efficiently. And Apple doesn’t allow the use of JiT because.. well they just don’t want to. It hurts virtualization badly too. So yeah, iPad has a lot of power, but only a handful of programs that take advantage of it

@@macmickI think you're taking this literally, people compare the two all the time. Maxtech came out with a video and compared the two just recently. Microsoft did not outright market it as an ipad alternative but by default it still can exist in that space as well as a computer. So yes it is justified. The real problem lies with apple as they limit the software to run alternative apps from desktop despite the fact the m4 is powerful.
