Does the mini only work with one apple ID or many apple IDs? Say you have three people in the house with different apple ID's, can they all bring their phones near the device to play music? Is there a separate screen to set up for all folks to use the intercom feature? Maybe you should have your daughter send you a test message from the Chinese store to the home pod mini and reply back before they close at 9:30.

HomePod isn't a mobile gadget and doesn't charge. it needs to be plugged in at all time to function so yes the charging adopter is necessary and that's the only way to get HomePod working while the phone can be charged with a laptop, wireless charging and phone doesn't need to be plugged in all time in order to work unlike the HomePod.
