Apple IIGS Depeche Mode Jukebox (1992)

A selection of Depeche Mode tunes composed on an Apple IIGS by James Brookes. Part of a demo disk called "Le Demo IIgs Cliche" by GS IRC running on the GSport/KEGS emulator, which as you can see does not correctly display the scrolling text or the bouncing color bar. I listened to this for years before finding out it even was Depeche Mode. I always thought "What a talented musical guy this James is", which he still is of course. :-)

It was a MOD file that first introduced me to the song "Enjoy the Silence". When I heard it years later being performed live by 8 Bit Weapon, I actually mistook it for one of their original songs, as I was so accustomed to hearing it in an 8-bit arrangement!

I got into DM after hearing "everything counts" and "photographic" as Atari 8-bit covers. Identifying them made me want to listen to more of their music.

Actually, James (alias "Abaddon") is pretty talented musically and otherwise! He did several other mixes, as well as his own compositions on the IIGS. Some of his songs were used in the Digital Exodus Xmas demo (ref: www.ninjaforce.com/html/special_demoscene_dexmas.html) (I'm one of its authors), and he did the soundtrack to Columns GS and DuoTris, as well as some of the graphics. I had the opportunity to spend several days with him during the time of Apple Expo West in 1993, including staying at his parent's beautiful home in Berkeley. Super nice guy. Last I knew he was working at Electronic Arts.

Jeremy Chadwick Yes, he sure is. I love his versions even more than the originals. :) It's been awhile since I checked out the Xmas demo--I will have to do that. Hey, you guys should come to KansasFest one of these years and have a mini reunion.
