I just bought Lumafusion 😠. $5 a month and $45 for an annual subscription. The whole point of having Final Cut is because you don’t have to pay a subscription. Apple finally did what we wanted but found a way to make us hate it.

That is where the market is going, and it is common sense as an income stream means Apple can develop the iPad app via the subscription revenue. Nothing is free in life, as there are always caveats to freebies. FCP on the Mac made little money for Apple as a one-off purchase, meaning they were slow to update and add features.

@@angusbabb4913 software devs have learnt the hard way that there is diminishing returns on a fixed lifetime price for software. To maintain ongoing development a subscription service is the future, see Adobe. I have about seven subs and it is not a problem as I understand that devs have to make money, and if they do, they will keep updating and improving the software. Like Adobe it will be forgotten in a few months as consumers enjoy having pro apps on their ipads.

@@andyH_England then there’s people like me that won’t pay. I’m a prosumer or just home user or whatever you call it. I am not paying susbscriptions. It’s stupid and a waste of money. Most of the things I would pay $100 for back in the day I’d now pay over $1000 for on new subscription models. Absolute waste of money for the majority of people. The problem is everyone does this. Just a money grab.

@@redman2751 It is just a realignment of the value of software. Devs realise their value is much higher than in the early days. But, as you say, it is up to the individual whether they want the added value and are willing to pay that cost.

@Wavefather Жыл бұрын
The issue with the subscription is that those who've paid for it for mac now need to pay for it for the iPad (monthly). If you're editing video that will generate the annual subscription cost within the project you're most likely using cameras that will need to be plugged in to sync video, external drives for back up and a good monitor for colour correction/proxy playback view. Second how well will the iPad deal with the thermal load of editing high quality/large file sizes and how long will the battery last? We already know phones and ipads, to some extent, get hot when running intense workloads so will this turn into an iPad being docked and plugged in to stay alive and connected to all the peripherals or is it more an update for making Shorts/Reels/Tiktoks? Finally we all know the iPad isn't used for shooting video because it's not designed to be held ergonomically when filming compared to a phone/camera so importing video will still need to be a part of the workflow. As you mentioned the craze behind getting FCP on ipads has only come from tech KZbinrs and not real world videographers, at worst a top of the line MacBook Air + FCP will do everything the iPad can and more.
@andyH_England
@andyH_England Жыл бұрын
You have encoders and decoders on the M2 iPad Pro, so ProRAW can easily be exported without thermal issues. The 11-inch iPad Pro is not too bad to shoot footage on for amateurs like me, so having that ease of shooting on my iPad and then using FCP to edit without all the shenanigans is time-saving and user-friendly (most cameras are now great in daylight). Editing and exporting 10-20 mins YT clips will be a breeze, and I see no issue with battery life. If you are doing long 6K and 8K, then even a MB Pro will eat through battery with that workload.
@Wavefather
@Wavefather Жыл бұрын
@@andyH_England The thermal issues I'm worried about aren't around import and export, they're more around editing large/complex videos. If one of the iPad features is multi-cam video support then the iPad will most likely be maxing out all available memory if you import 4K+ files and that's where power/thermal management becomes an issue. With a MBP you have the benefit of more memory, better cooling & if your battery is drained it's a much more ergonomic device to work with when plugged in. This plus the use of keyboard shortcuts in editing to trim and all. I've tried recording multiple long videos on both an iPhone and iPad and around 10-minute mark the device really warms up and battery life begins to drop, pair this with the need for a tripod, and mics, depending on what you're doing. It becomes a hassle compared to using a dedicated camera. It seems like this should/may be done as a FCP lite version tailored for the iPad with some features being ported to the mac down the line once it reaches the public.

One important note: these do NOT require M1 iPads. For Logic Pro, it only requires an iPad with an A12 (so even a basic 2020 iPad will be able to run LogicPro)! Keep to the native synth, sampler and effects (which are already amazing, and or utilize efficient third party synths such as Zeeon or the like, and you’ll be golden for quite a while even with a super basic iPad from a year or even three years ago)…

Playing down the subscription makes this sound like an ad. When the hardware maker supports this, it changes the paradigm of what the device's purpose is. Those that have the full app now also have to pay for a sub to access some features that the full price doesn't have. Yuck!

How much do you think it cost Apple to develop FCP for iPad, and how much will it cost going forward? 8:26 I wanted to make this a separate post because I think this isn't the best take to have. Apple can just charge a 1 time fee for the iPad app just in the same way Davinci Resolve does for both their apps. I think Apple is doing this to improve their subscription numbers across the board which will make the investors happen but at the expense of the consumer. At their size they should be able to offer this with a one time fee and even bundle for those who use the desktop app as well. Also when you do the math over lets say 10 years Final Cut Pro = $299 Davinci Resolve Studio = $299 Davinci Resolve iPad = $99 Final Cut for iPad = $600 if paid monthly and $500 If Annually Paid (assuming that there isn't any price increase which I'm sure their will be) Over the long term which is what a creator should look at its going to be a more expensive venture on subscription.

They KILLED It before it was released. From Apple: "Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro for iPad will each be available on the App Store for $4.99 (US) per month or $49 (US) per year with a one-month free trial". $50 a year! No Way!!!! I just canceled my Adobe subscription because I was tired of paying over $60 a month for software I only used for one client who I have not worked for for a long time. All the others, I use FCP or Resolve Studio. Both of which I have paid $300, ONCE. I will stick for travel FCP to using my trusty MacBook Air M1 which I already own. Even though I have a iPad Pro M2, I can always use Resolve on it as it was a free download. Hope it stays that way. BTW, I just edited 46 video from NAB in FCP on my Mac. Nothing is faster.

But those same professionals would be served by faster than usb 2.0 transfer speeds, standardized connections, 1" camera sensors, better window management, and better compatibility with their clients and It's indefinite with all those things.

@@Dailytekk Yeah, that's just the low hanging fruit that should have been done a decade ago. There would still be a laundry list of things to get feature parity with Windows and Android. At that point though, I would actually buy a Mac and an iPhone... Instead of buying a maxed out MacBook Pro and returning it because of the software and hardware drawbacks.

@@stevenswall I do not understand why people want an iPad to be like Windows. MS was the same, they decided that Windows Tablets should be like Windows OS, and now Windows Tablets do not exist objectively. People want tablets to be tablets; otherwise, they would buy a laptop. Apple got it right, and Android Tablets copied them; MS failed miserably and missed a chance to lead the tablet market because they had the same wrong vision as you. For the record, devs make apps, and Apple cannot force them to make apps and games for iPads even though Apple provides substantial help.
@stevenswall

@@andyH_England Ignore the Windows part of you want to. Call it more like Ubuntu, which has the best of MacOS and Windows... Why would someone want that? Because a file system is useful. Because efficient use of screen real estate matters on all form factors. Because snapping windows is better than scattered stacks. Because an app store is useful (Ubuntu had this first.) Because a docked tablet is a laptop it just lacks ports but even that isn't relevant because Apple users are used to dongles. Apple doesn't need to force developers to do anything. They can already run all tablet apps on MacOS and vice versa... They just need to use their draconian company policies to do something about people opting out. Microsoft got it wrong because they have never gotten it right. The entire OS is inefficient and busted from the ground up and the only valid reason people have for using it is because windows runs a lot of business programs. Windows itself is trash, propped up by exclusive software... Similar to the Xbox. Android might have it wrong too, but then most Android manufacturers are laughably stupid with their disgusting implementations of Android that pale in comparison to things like Lineage OS. Apple got marketing right, and making a product where no individual feature is the worst in class (relative to the purposely busted trash experiences made by Samsung and Google.) ...and that's really all that matters to most consumers. Most people don't know that they are inefficient brain dead morons dithering in the dark with their trash tools because they have never experienced an OS set up to get things done as efficiently as possible.

The problem is simple: DR is one time-purchase (or even free); FCP is a subscription plan… so either FCP for the iPad has some really amazing features, or I’ll never will choose FCP over DR. Apple couldn’t resist it. And that will be a problem for them.

@@andyH_England No it’s definitely not better? Apple is an over trillion dollar company with a 5 Billion dollar campus. I have not talked to a single real human who is excited about Final cut or logic, software they already paid a half a grand if they got both, on machines that cost thousands of dollars cumulatively, just to now be subscribed indefinitely to inferior mobile versions of the same software, except with inferior data transfer speeds, no real file system, and no plugins. Literally Apple could have made their entire existing customer base excited to pay another 300$ per application. Instead no one is excited, it’s five years after they promised “pro level apps”, and now other companies do it better. This is called a loss.

@@ghost-user559 Don't buy it, then! I do not see the problem. Adobe, the most prominent creator software, is a subscription, but I do not see you and others whining about that on YT! And Adobe Suite is many times more expensive. FCP for iPad is aimed at pros who do not even blink at $5 a month. For consumers, then buy DaVinci or LumaFusion. Stop trolling and buy or use what suits you.

@@andyH_England You’re joking right? Adobe offers literally over 20 Professional Applications that are industry standards? Apple destroyed Final Cut when they bought it and the entire industry jumped ship because they destroyed it lol? And people use pro tools in the industry? I’ve never heard a legitimate musician or producer using logic and I actually worked in Hollywood with actual industry professionals? You are hilarious. You have dozens of comments acting like you have some superior perspective but suddenly I’m a “troll” because I actually want to OWN software? Lol clown. It’s amazing that you can gaslight yourself into believing that never owning something is somehow superior to actually owning something. If I’m paying 1500-2500$ for a decked out iPad Pro to edit “Professionally” then a perpetual subscription to inferior software with no plugins, with no ports and no file system is objectively and factually NOT professional. And I’m allowed to have a rational argument and logic based opinion without being a “troll”.

@@andyH_England I haven’t heard anything from you as to the benefits of paying forever and ever and never getting anything in return? I’ve read all your comments and responses, and so far other than a theoretical lining of the pockets of big tech, I see zero advantage for the consumer or a professional? In fact it’s indeed inferior in every single possible way. And to even pretend pointing out the objective reality is “trolling” is hilarious. Unless you work for Apple? The fact is people are willing to spend thousands of dollars on hardware, and then again hundreds upon hundreds on software. When you no longer own that software, there is zero benefit to the consumer whatsoever.

I am usually against the idea of subscriptions for software, however, Microsoft’s decision to make Office a subscription allowed millions to get the software (legally) for a price that was within reach of almost everyone (who could afford a PC or Mac). Like Office, Final Cut Pro and Logic Pro are professional tools. Yes, they are used by enthusiasts, but really the idea is to make money with them. Being a subscription puts these powerful tools within reach of almost everyone and will improve their chances of establishing themselves in their chosen career.
