This is the Apple Magic Keyboard, should you still buy it in 2021? The Magic Keyboard comes in 2 variants, there is this standard silver version, coming in at 99 dollars and a version with numeric keypad, available in both silver and space grey, coming in at 129 and 149 dollars respectively. Inside the clean and minimalistic packaging we will find the Magic Keyboard upfront and centre. Underneath we have a USB A to lighting charging cable, nice they included this but wish it was USB C instead. And finally we have the user guide and warranty info, no Apple stickers. The Apple magic keyboards thankfully features a reliable scissor switch mechanism that, unlike the butterfly mechanism, can stand up to more than a speck of dust. The keyboard looks great, features a solid aluminium structure that has no flex and has a tapered design similar to that of the MacBook Air. The minimalistic design allows for a small footprint, taking up less space on your desk, compared to other keyboards, while of course still including full-size keys. The back houses the lighting port, used for charging and the power switch. On the bottom there are four rubber feet that effectively keep the keyboard on your desk. As someone who primarily uses a MacBook Pro, buying an external keyboard is not a must. However, these days with many of us working from home, I have found this to make a big difference in productivity, posture and overall comfort. The keyboard connect via bluetooth and therefor can also connect to your iPhone or iPad. Speaking of which, for iPad, while this keyboard may not replace Apple’s iPad specific magic keyboard, it does work very well, especially if you have a smart cover. So how does it type? This is somewhat subjective, however I find this to be an excellent type. The Scissor switches provide, what is for me, the perfect amount of key travel. The keyboard is quiet, much quieter compared to my MacBook. After having used the Apple butterfly keyboard on my MacBook, going back to this scissor switch mechanism, I found myself enjoying this more each day. Honestly makes me miss the keyboards Apple included on older Macs. Which is why I am all the more happy that Apple has now went back to including a scissor switch keyboard in their 16 inch MacBook Pro. The Magic keyboard features a row of function keys that are the same size as the lettered keys, this keeps the design consistent but may take some getting used to, as by feel, the function keys feel just like any other key. Starting on the left we have a large escape key, brightness controls, mission control, launchpad, media controls, volume and finally an eject key. Coming from the Touch Bar, it is refreshing to be able to access simple functions like volume control with only one click. The battery life on this keyboard has been great, lasting me around 8-10 weeks. It can be used whilst charging and charges in less than a 2 hours. So overall, it is worth it? The starting price of 99 dollars is not cheap, if you are looking for a more affordable option I suggest looking at keyboards from Logitech. However if you want a keyboard that will fit in with Apple’s design aesthetic, is well built and reliable. Then this is and excellent buy - making it my keyboard of choice. I personally suggest getting the standard Magic keyboard seen here, over the version with numeric keyboard, unless you specifically need this feature, as this is saves some money and takes up less room on your desk. I do hope that all versions of the next magic keyboard are available in space grey to match your Mac’s look even more.

Hi, thanks for your comment. This Magic Keyboard was released back in 2015, so is definitely overdue for an update. However is hard to say when that will be, on one hand I expect to possibly see a new keyboard released alongside the new iMac with M1 chip (expected mid-end 2021). On the other hand, every year there have been predictions for a new keyboard that never happened. Apple will eventually release a new keyboard, but I would base your buying decision on how much you would benefit from having the keyboard now, versus waiting. If you need it now, I would say it is a great keyboard that is worth it! Plus Apple products tend to hold their value quite well so there is always the option to sell later. - Dion

I have a huge curiosity that I can not find answer anywhere. Is this magic keyboard the same as the keyboard integrated in the macbook pro 2021. Do you get the same experience on both. Is it worth buying an apple magic keyboard to use it on macbook pro 2021? Because if it is the same experience I don't really see the point of getting one.

@DionMedia
@DionMedia 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Deyab, this really comes down to personal preference. In general, chicklet style keyboards such as the Apple Magic Keyboard, have less key travel and are more quiet. On the other hand, mechanical keyboards offer far more key travel and tend to be a bit louder. I personally prefer chicklet style keyboards as I find I type faster on them but I encourage you to try both styles of keyboard in a store to see what suits you best.
@BassAsLeaders
@BassAsLeaders 3 жыл бұрын
The great thing with mechanical keyboards is that they are customizable. Especially the hot-swappable ones. You can choose the type of switch (actuation force, travel distance), the type of plastic used for the keycaps and their shape, the material used for the plate, the number of keys, etc. If you have the time and really want a smooth typing experience you can even lube the switches lol. I find the only down side is all this hobby can become pretty addictive. Tldr: the apple magic looks great but I wouldn't drop my mech for it.

@@DionMedia should I wait for the next generation that features backlit? Struggling to buy it now or wait. Have you been wanting the backlit when you're using the keyboard?

@@lisama2538 Hi Lisa, thank you for your question. While I do wish the Magic keyboard was backlit, for me it is not a dealbreaker. This Keyboard was released back in 2015, so is definitely overdue for an update. However it is hard to say when that will be, on one hand I expect to possibly see a new keyboard released alongside the new iMac with M1 chip (expected mid-end 2021). On the other hand, every year there have been predictions for a new keyboard that never happened. Apple will eventually release a new keyboard, but there is no guarantee it will be backlit. I would base your buying decision on how much you would benefit from having the keyboard now, versus waiting. If you need it now, I would say it is a great keyboard that is worth it! Plus Apple products tend to hold their value quite well so there is always the option to sell later. - Dion

The keyboard is not backlit. If you are looking for an alternative that is backlit, I highly recommend a different keyboard I reviewed in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJXbqmuIfpmrpKc

I bought the Apple Magic Keyboard 3 months ago. I had an older model that had two batteries that were able to be replaced. The new one has a built in battery which cannot be replaced. Well, the battery died yesterday, after only 3 months. I am glad that it has an ABS connector so we can still use it attached to our computer I would not recommend this keyboard because one does not know exactly what the shelf life really is.

I see where you are coming from, hope Apple will add a backlight to their external keyboards one day. Perhaps this keyboard will interest you instead, comes in at half the price of the Magic Keyboard and is backlit - kzbin.info/www/bejne/gJXbqmuIfpmrpKc

Did you ever used an apple keyboard? I used mechanical keebs (MX Blues, Gateron Optical Browns, all of them about $100) for a long time, then I got my macbook air m1 and fell in love with its keyboard, faaar better than any other keyboard I've ever used. Just ordered a "membrane 60% $100" keyboard from apple 😇

@@luandevecchi3862mechanical keyboards are never good for fast typers(120wpm+) on my macbook i averaged at 120 but when i bought a new mechanical keyboard i literally struggled to get 100 lol, now im used to it and get 120 but i’d love an apple magic one, but ITS THE PRICE WHICH IS BIZZAREEE, and the logitech k380, i mean its solid but i use windows now and not that its a issue tho, the round keycaps might be problematic for me

Watching this two finger peck typing is killing me. Why not learn to use such an expensive keyboard properly? You won't be moving your wrists as much and looking more at your screen than at your hands.
