This is the Apple Magic Keyboard, should you still buy it in 2021? The Magic Keyboard comes in 2 variants, there is this standard silver version, coming in at 99 dollars and a version with numeric keypad, available in both silver and space grey, coming in at 129 and 149 dollars respectively. Inside the clean and minimalistic packaging we will find the Magic Keyboard upfront and centre. Underneath we have a USB A to lighting charging cable, nice they included this but wish it was USB C instead. And finally we have the user guide and warranty info, no Apple stickers. The Apple magic keyboards thankfully features a reliable scissor switch mechanism that, unlike the butterfly mechanism, can stand up to more than a speck of dust. The keyboard looks great, features a solid aluminium structure that has no flex and has a tapered design similar to that of the MacBook Air. The minimalistic design allows for a small footprint, taking up less space on your desk, compared to other keyboards, while of course still including full-size keys. The back houses the lighting port, used for charging and the power switch. On the bottom there are four rubber feet that effectively keep the keyboard on your desk. As someone who primarily uses a MacBook Pro, buying an external keyboard is not a must. However, these days with many of us working from home, I have found this to make a big difference in productivity, posture and overall comfort. The keyboard connect via bluetooth and therefor can also connect to your iPhone or iPad. Speaking of which, for iPad, while this keyboard may not replace Apple’s iPad specific magic keyboard, it does work very well, especially if you have a smart cover. So how does it type? This is somewhat subjective, however I find this to be an excellent type. The Scissor switches provide, what is for me, the perfect amount of key travel. The keyboard is quiet, much quieter compared to my MacBook. After having used the Apple butterfly keyboard on my MacBook, going back to this scissor switch mechanism, I found myself enjoying this more each day. Honestly makes me miss the keyboards Apple included on older Macs. Which is why I am all the more happy that Apple has now went back to including a scissor switch keyboard in their 16 inch MacBook Pro. The Magic keyboard features a row of function keys that are the same size as the lettered keys, this keeps the design consistent but may take some getting used to, as by feel, the function keys feel just like any other key. Starting on the left we have a large escape key, brightness controls, mission control, launchpad, media controls, volume and finally an eject key. Coming from the Touch Bar, it is refreshing to be able to access simple functions like volume control with only one click. The battery life on this keyboard has been great, lasting me around 8-10 weeks. It can be used whilst charging and charges in less than a 2 hours. So overall, it is worth it? The starting price of 99 dollars is not cheap, if you are looking for a more affordable option I suggest looking at keyboards from Logitech. However if you want a keyboard that will fit in with Apple’s design aesthetic, is well built and reliable. Then this is and excellent buy - making it my keyboard of choice. I personally suggest getting the standard Magic keyboard seen here, over the version with numeric keyboard, unless you specifically need this feature, as this is saves some money and takes up less room on your desk. I do hope that all versions of the next magic keyboard are available in space grey to match your Mac’s look even more.
