Oddly enough, gargoyles were put on the outside of churches for defense, I think. To ward off evil. And they were also made into gutter spouts. I know when I first read this, it surprised me. It is from medieval times so it makes as much sense as other stuff originating back then.

Unfortunately (imho), European houses don't have screens in the windows. Drives me nuts bc they like leaving them open and bugs get in. *severely bug-phobic* Just this week, we've had 4 wasps in the house, and my husband had to kill one of them bc it was too stupid to leave and got itself stuck in my work stuff on my desk. *sighs* When we get our own house, I'm going to insist on having screens put in bc this is ridiculous. But anyway, from what I've seen, most places outside North America don't have screens. It's frustrating. (tho the hotel I stayed at in Seoul had a screen on the balcony window, so there's that...)
