What really sucks about it is that as someone who uses it to draw, I really see its potential. This is a digital art device that costs less than most Cintiqs, but you can easily take it anywhere - it's the computer and the drawing tablet combined. But that's pretty much the only completely-unique strength it has right now. I envision the iPad's potential as being about the same as a MacBook, just with a focus on touch input, and maybe a little less focus on multitasking. The problem is that the OS is just broken because for basic laptop-replacement things and keeping kids distracted it works well, but the multitasking is an absolute mess as Apple keeps just shipping half-baked features instead of properly iterating on what they have and fleshing out app-to-app interactions. The foundation is there, but Apple refuses to build up towards higher-level usage. I don't think the iPad being better would even come at the expense of MacBook sales (and even if they did, the iPad Air and Pro are starting to push up against MacBook prices anyway, so the margins wouldn't even change) - the fact one you interact with using a touchscreen and the other with a keyboard and trackpad is enough to make a difference, and people will choose what fits their needs better. Heck, even in a world like that, I'd probably still get both as I'm still really used to keyboard-and-mouse interaction having grown up in the 2000's.

@@zaneroote5798 it won't happen again. that's over. it's been trialed and error'd by microsoft. we got through that. and also, osx already has a GREAT interface for touch! they don't have to do much. Just make it touch capable. the dock is already there, finder is already terrific for touch friendly, and so many other things. but apple is stubborn and egotistical. they wont do that. they are on a "mission" of having separate OS on each device now. which is very strange tbh. They are all over the place and it's starting to hinder development. instead of BIG updates, they do these little updates now that just keep the carrot dangled here and there. That's why microsoft will always be ahead and has been since the 80s. Microsoft's OS releases are much different than it's previous one. it's always a refreshing twist with LOTS of new features and an overhauled UI experience. they went through the bullshit with 8 and 8.1 making windows touch friendly. they got that out of the way even though people raged and sales were down and people moved away but they crawled through that dark hole to come out very clean on the other side. they made windows FULLY touch support compatible with 10 while having all the options of 7, xp AND with a new interface / design. and now 11 builds on all of that with even more efficient use of things and yet another design overhaul (looks sexy AF honestly) AND you get the same OS experience no matter the device you are on. Trust me, there are apple developers that WISH they had made os x touch friendly. THAT is where they will fall behind in the future.

Digital illustrator here, the iPad Pro to me has made me $$$$. Like some serious $$$$, and there’s no other product that works as well and is as portable as it on the market. I can use it to draw in Photoshop, Fresco, or Procreate. I can use it as a secondary monitor when I’m using Sketchup, Premiere, or Davinci Resolve. I can use it as a content consumption device when I want something larger than my phone or when my kids want some screen time. It really does have a unique purpose for me that checks a lot of boxes that a phone nor a laptop can do. But that’s me, the digital illustrator. I think it was made for us.

I use to agree that’s the iPad Air was pointless in the line-up but then I got into digital art and it is actually the best bang for buck iPad for digital artists, especially the latest models. It’s compatible with the best pencil, got a nice laminated large screen that’s good to draw on and doesn’t cost as much as the pro. Sure the pro has the higher refresh rate which looks great, it’s not a necessity for drawing with how good the lag on Apple Pencils are. But yeah, just thought I would point out what I recently discovered about the iPad Air.

This video doesn’t suggest any improvements for the iPad. 1: Everyone keeps saying that the only way to take advantage of the M4 is to put Mac OS on the iPad. Why? No one can explain that. There’s nothing special about Mac OS that means it can take better advantage of the hardware except for the fact you can get more apps. But the solution to more apps is not having Mac OS, it’s side loading and third party app stores. 2: I understand the iPad Air branding is confusing, but it also has its place in the lineup as the iPad with the latest hardware but not Pro. Really what should change is the naming. iPad Air should be iPad, and iPad should be iPad Lite. 3: Something that is actually an issue is the stupid Magic Keyboard that doesn’t allow you to draw because the hinge stops at a specific angle. It should instead allow you to fold the keyboard all the way around so you can lie the iPads flat to draw. Their cases also need a way of securing the Apple Pencil so that it doesn’t fall off when being carried or in your bag.

1- Maybe a hybrid form (like Samsung Dex), the iPad would operate on iPad Os without a keyboard, and would have a hybrid system (a kind of mix between iPad Os and mac Os with at leaaaaast a decent cursor and a good file management system) when connected to a keyboard / screen... 2- The basic iPad should indeed be called iPad SE (like the iPhones, with a new version every 4-5 years) 3- totally agreed
@skyguy19887 ай бұрын
you are kidding right? os x would be SPLENDID to use on a touchscreen!!
@sodapone7 ай бұрын
macOS on the iPad would be terrible for both iPads and Macs, as Apple would need to redesign the UI to be larger so that you can tap things more easily with your fat fingers. This would in turn make the experience on Mac worse, as larger UI elements are less space-efficient for something as precise as a cursor. Basically, it would do to macOS what Windows 8 did to Windows, where it doesn't do enough to make it comfortable to use on a tablet, while making the desktop experience a lot worse. You ever wonder why Microsoft did something so stupid as "simplify" the right-click menu on Windows 11 when they didn't have to? Well it was because they had to make it easier to use for touchscreen users. What macOS has that iPadOS doesn't is a consistent workflow for anything outside of basic iPhone-like actions, e.g. tapping, swiping, and the app view. Nothing else is consistent; the file browser is a mess, Split View and Stage Manager both are way more finicky than the default windowing behaviour on macOS, and even when you connect a Magic Keyboard, the keyboard shortcuts aren't even the same. These are the kinds of things - of which there are many - that need to be fixed if iPadOS is to be on level ground with macOS and even iOS.

Apple is targeting the wrong crowd, especially with the pro. Yes, they are looking at digital artists. But many digital artists are out of work now. Not many can afford to pay $2,000 for a tablet. Meaning only corporations can afford them. They are also trying to target business people who may want to use a tablet as a stand-in for a laptop when they are just visiting a client or doing presentations and do not need that much processing power. But then they don't make the pro business friendly enough, especially in the case of multitasking. Just make it switch between macos and ipados and you're done.

I've had three iPads in my life and now have a Galaxy Tab, and I fully think Galaxy Tab is the answer to what an iPad should be. It's got all the bells and whistles that make a tablet great, but not a laptop chipset - and by extension, not a laptop price either. The Tab S9 (equivalent to 11" iPad Pro) starts at $800 before promotions and trade in, includes the S Pen, and can be easily gotten for much less. Samsung's system of how they handle discounts is confusing at best, but suffice it to say I paid $550 to get my Tab S8 Ultra (retailed for $1100) and its official keyboard case (retailed for $350), and it does everything I used to do on my iPad that I spent $900 on just as well - better in some cases, multitasking is leagues better than iPadOS can do for example. Also, if in the future the Tab S series gets a laptop chipset, it has more ways to use that power - Android lets you sideload a Windows emulator and play Steam games, for one example. Though if you're interested in doing that you're probably better off buying a Surface Pro, let's be real.

This is a problem with the Vision Pro as well. It’s NOT a “spatial computer”, it’s a “spatial iPad”. It runs what’s essentially an AR version of iPadOS instead of a REAL computer OS like macOS. I wish the EU would force Apple to open up their operating systems even more, to the point where users can give admin perms or reserved entitlements to any application they want, at any time. Let them actually own every bit of their devices.

No, just give the iPad sudo. Most of the time you're not gonna be able to multitask like a mac on such small screens, but the locked-down aspect of iPadOS (no running processes in the background guize..) ruins it. No need to change the UI, just make it preform like macOS with the freedom you expect of its Unix family. A confusing lineup is par-for-the-course though and arguably the most computer aspect of it if you know what I mean

Honestly what Apple needs to do is drop the Pro. The by giving the Air the same size options as the Pro, and the M2 chip, and the Pencil Pro, it is just as capable as the Pro in every way. The M4 isn't actually any better on the Pro because no apps can utilize that power and thr OS certainly doesn't utilize it. The only thing you get from the Pro at this point is a better screen, which, while nice, isn't worth the $400-$800 more they're asking for it. That's the price of the base iPad or Air over again, just for OLED. But in practice, it's the same result. A base iPad, a Mini that's the new mid tier, and a higher end that goes up to 13". I suppose if they dropped the price of the Pro to be closer to what the Air is, that would effectively do the same thing. That solves a lot of their current issues with identity between options, but it still doesn't solve the OS problem. There is realistically nothing any of the iPads can do that an iPhone can't. And the largwr screens on iPhones make it less and less compelling to get an iPad for anything outside of digital art. Because honestly, all the other "pro" apps still aren't up to what they are in MacOS. No one is going to realistically use them when they can work some much more fluidly on a real OS. So, if you're an artist, the iPad Pro is tempting just for th screen, but overkill when the Air is almost half the price for the same capability, and you won't actually notice the difference while drawing. If you aren't an artist, the mini or base iPad are great if you just want a larger screen and e-reader that has more capabilities than a kindle.
@nightshades76207 ай бұрын
Strongly disagree about the iPad Air, at least the new iPad Air M2 released this year is one of the best things, it's essentially the 2022 iPad Pro, but very much cheaper, it's a dream come true for artists to have that with a 13 inch display.

I have been thinking on Apple's dilema when it comes to iPad. Almost every productivity product I have is from Apple but I still have my Surface Pro instead of an iPad. And I released that Apple doesn't want to make the same mistake as Microsoft. Using desktop apps in the tablet mode of Surface is horrible. I can't even use discord in tablet mode (I can, but is disgusting). Microsoft store on windows is very bad too, which means I have to use normal desktop websites instead of native apps when I'm using the touch screen. Websites are not created for touch interactions. Windows 11 is a bridge between tablets and desktop OS, but it still fails in tablet mode UX. I'm pretty sure that, before having desktop apps on ipad, we will have a swift (programming language) compiler update that creates an abstraction between the mac software and the ipad app. Till then, we won't be having what we want.

All the options are good but mini and pro are definitely useless ones you can use air just as pro and normal iPad for everything mini can’t do shit about anything the battery runs off every 2 seconds and pro is just too expensive for any iPadOS since Air so powerful to fully use the whole AppStore and internal applications even in multitasking why would you even pay full MacBook Pro price to a iPad that cannot do any better than its inferiors. The only cool thing about pro is back camera but I almost never used iPads main camera for 5 years of usage. ipadOS is a piss poor attempt at "porting" macOS to tablets. it's a half frakenstein hybrid that does neither good. what they SHOULD HAVE done is mac macOS touch friendly so it can be used on ipads. JUST like microsoft redesigned windows to be touch friendly. it can be used on any device regardless of what it is now. they went through the shakiness of 8 and 8.1 and came out really clean on the other side with 10 and now 11. macOS is greatly setup for a touch interface but for some reason apple REFUSES to do such a thing. THAT is and will be the downfall
