Regarding the how insecure using a normal card is, when ever you pay with your card at a terminal the cashier has the ‘reprint’ option. That gives them your full card number and all they have to do is remember your expiry date to manually charge your card WITHOUT you or the card being present. I work at a front desk of a hotel and we can easily do this if we want. However Apple Pay masks your number and prevents us or our finance department from seeing your card details

The idea of excluding some of the CC credentials in the data transfer is great, even though you can still hack the Apple stream/mechanism or other wallet applications, if you get around or maybe directly in front of the encryption. You would then just be abusing the Apple pay process to your benefit. It stands or falls with how good the security measures of any paying process at the end of day are.

Not to worry. First, current NFC standards require a distance of no more than 2cm (there is a proposal to increase it to 4cm for improved convenience and speed). In any case, what passes over NFC in contactless payments is secure, not reusable. It is true that NFC is itself not secure but any required security is, as in contactless payments, built into the application.

Physical card replacement, whilst using your digital replacement, carries one major security risk. If somebody intercepts your mail, that new physical card is active in transit. It has to be active in order for your digital replacement card to work. Whereas before, even if somebody stole that physical card, it would not be active. The credit card companies have not separated the two.

In the US Express pay only works with cooperating, mostly transit, systems and for small payments. An iPhone with Express Pay enabled and a contactless card work identically. Note that Express Pay is an Apple Wallet, not Apple Pay, feature. The charge goes directly to the default card that you designate for Express Pay, not through Apple. Note that all contactless payments require a careful balance between convenience and security, Most payees get it right, either initially or quickly. Such balance depends in part upon whether or not the transaction is online. The risk is to the payee, not the card holder. In Europe, where many contactless applications are not online, one must enter a PIN for contactless card transactions over a threshold amount.

I added Apple Pay when it was first introduced and I use it all the time, in fact I’ve become so reliant on it 🙈. Unfortunately though, when I got a new phone the transition of information (trying to add the previous card ) from one phone to another did not go smoothly which resulted in me having to issue a new card. I think it’s fine now though now that I know a bit more about how Apple Pay and wallet work.

Yeah that happened to me once too. It was pretty annoying transitioning all the cards over, but they've made the process a lot better

Great video! Sadly, Lowe’s and Home Depot are still stuck in the Stone Age. My understanding is at Home Depot has an agreement with PayPal, so they won’t do Apple Pay. And Lowe’s, as well, stuck in the stone age.

Then stop going to them and let them know that you won’t come in again until that Apple Pay logo appears on the front of the stores and they will have no other option but to do it. Consumer has the power and use it.

This is a USA problem. In Canada, everything accepts Apple Pay that has contactless payments. That includes Walmart that usually doesn’t accept it in the US. It’s also a shocker how slow the US is at adapting contactless, even pre covid 99.99% already accepted Apple Pay and contactless here

Ralphs - which is part of Kroger - finally gave in this year. Kroger wanted people to use their app. Not sure why Home Depot is holding out. The self checkout kiosks appear to have equipment to accept contactless.

More secure than a physical card? Has anyone read the entire EULA to make sure of that?

Great content, straight to the point, helpful visualisation … one tiny thing for me is your speed. Speak a bit slower and it will not only be easier to follow (e.g. for non native English speakers) but add some viewing time as a byproduct - win-win and an easy one. Content is king but accessibility is its queen, together they rule the world (of KZbin at least😉)

The express travel is nice but there is a catch . In Europe there are thieves that can touch the pocket you where the phone and make a transaction with a POS whithout your knowledge. So better have the expres travel feature off 😢

FYI: This is not just how Apple Pay works, this is how the whole ecosystem of wallet applications (known as software-based mobile payments, or SBMP) works, as mandated by the entity behind the orchestration of all major card brands, EMVCo. :)

Had my Credit Cards stolen from my GYM locker as secure as you can be with a lock. Second time in 5 years across two different states. Amazingly both times they left my phone, keys and wallet contents. This second experience has me ready to try to end keeping physical cards with me at all.

@@dileevip 2 weeks in it seems like outside of sit down restaurants like 80% of places I visit accept NFC payments. There are a few Grocery stores like Kroger that don't accept it but you can use their App to pay so you don't have to carry a physical card. Sadly, Home Depot and Lowes both don't accept Apple Pay which is odd when I was able to use it at places like the Dollar Tree and Harbor Freight. I will say its a major improvement being able to leave the cards at home and just hide one in my vehicle if I need it in a pinch.

@@dileevip Drove from Dallas to Sacramento for Thanksgiving. Lots of small towns and non tech places on the way. Love's truck stops and Chevron all had contactless readers on the Gas Pumps. Flyers didn't have it on the pumps but I was able to use inside the store. Some selection bias on my end but Costco's and Safeway by all its other names those gas stations all had NFC readers. About 1,800 miles each way and I would say 75% I could easily do with NFC. It wasn't the only factor as fuel costs, etc played a role.

In the European Union, by law it's required for all shops, no matter what they sell, to have contact less method of payment. That means everything like Google Pay or Apple Pay works normally with no issues.

When Apple introduced Apple Pay there were only 200K points of sale where one could use it. At that time few US banks were issuing contactless cards (and most issuers were still putting the Primary Account Number on the face of the card and the mag-stripe.) The number has grown fast to the point where it is now rare to encounter a merchant where it cannot be used. OMNY can be used throughout the NYC mass transit system and mass transit around the world is adopting contactless payment schemes. I rarely carry a physical card any more and long for the day when I will never carry one.

@@dileevip I spent five weeks in Slovakia with trips to Krakow, Budapest and Vienna. I was able to use contactless payments in all the big cities and some of the smaller ones. When I got to some of the smaller towns, it was cash only.
