Power Computing was probably their most serious competitor; they built workstation-class Mac compatibles which often outperformed Apple's offering.

Outstanding. One of Apple’s weirdest Macs.

The feature option is for a option to allow 2 ide devices on a single bus, mostly this feature is turned of in those macs to save costs and to disable the advantage for the user to increase the storage.

In case you're interested (after all this time) ethernet was standard on the 200MHz model but came on an expansion card that filled that Comm II slot on the riser. The 160MHz model was supplied with a riser that had three PCI slots.

that was my first Mac back in 97, I got it because it was the cheapest model! 1 or 2GB HD! I learned design and graphic design on it. It was slow and the SCSI chain was a pain in the ass to work properly. But I loved it!

If you can find one, you may be able to find a ATI Mach 64 or whatever that uses as a PCI graphics card. You might have to flash a Mac compatible firmware or you might be able to just put it in and use it.

I don't get what is supposed to be so bad about the 4400's. Is it the lack of plastic tabs that break off or is it the painted metal that does not yellow like crazy? Compared to most of the PC cases of this are the 4400 has a quite solid one.

Hi Jason, Not sure if you will see this because it's an old video. I recently purchased a 7200 Macintosh Performa from the USA and I reside in Australia. Watching your video I'm thinking you're in Australia too? My question is I accidentally blew the power supply of the 7200 by forgetting to move the voltage switch on the rear of the device. I tried purchasing a new power supply and changed the switch which also blew. It wasn't packed well........so my last effort was to purchase another 7200. Is it just a matter of switching over the red voltage switch to 230 on the power supply then I should be good to go? Given I've blown two power supplies I'm just nervous about stuffing up another computer, not to mention the expense....... Just can't work out why the second power supply would blow when it was set to the correct 230v on the rear. Thought maybe you could look at your computers and confirm they're all set to 230....Cheers.

I still own a PM 7600 with a g3 card. But we had a number of these. You could swap out the IDE drive for a Scsci using a cable but the SCSI port was still horribly limited. I think 20mb per second transfer rate or something like that. But BeOS wouldn't play too nice with the IDE controllers, partly why we had the machine to start with. But we had to get BeOS on to that machine somehow... But my PM 7600 was superior in every way imaginable. I remember the clone era, and I remember devs and Apple employees being scared the clone market would gut Apple's hardware business but when you look at the offerings at the time, that just doesn't hold water. Sure Apple was more expensive but there was a reason(s) why someone would buy a genuine Apple product over the clones. Only Daystar Digital really had anything worth considering. We had one of them monster quad core towers in our lab. It was quite impressive with the right software, hint:) But really when you looked at the limitations and the build quality, the clone business simply offered less. But it offered a way for buyers to get in to owning a MacOS compatible computer fairly cheap. Power Computing comes to mind on that. But that came at a cost to Apple and the 4400 was seen as their answer. I liked it because it forced Apple to become more competitive. This was a very dark era for Apple. If people today thinks that Apple is stingy and overpriced...... Yeah.

The GIMO connector could be used for video mirroring for a compatible DOS card, and I believe the Orange Micro DOS card supported it.

That is interesting. There is very little documentation that I could find to shed much more light, unfortunately. I do have a question. I'm looking at trying to procure an older PowerPC with DOS card if possible. What should I look for?

Yep... Seems that the 1990s were a time when Apple's CPUs kind of mimicked the style of IBM Compatible PCs of the time, rather than the AIO design that the original Macs seem to go for. It wasn't until the iMac that they went back to the original concept of how the Mac should have been.

Thank you for this video, I like the 7220 very much because it's easy to upgrade due standard components and for me, it's design is pleasant. But disassembly is because of the cheap sharp metal and old breaking plastic noses a real pain in the a**.

I had one of these, I remember it being very poorly put together compared to Apple's other models from the mid 90s. The 4400 may as well have said Dell or Compaq on the front, it was basically a Mac in a PC costume. Definitely a low point of Apple's history, before it was saved by Jobs & the iMac.

If you'd have cleaned the corrosion off with rubbing alcohol prior to powering it up, you'd have been fine. Running the power shorted out just about every pin on that GPU... Not smart... You don't just hope that massive corrosion somehow isn't a super conductive problem while its spread over every single pin of an IC. Also, that power supply is an AT unit... not ATX. Pretty indicative of the era.

Apple was always known for their revolutionary products, which really stood out of the crowd. When Steve Jobs was fired at Apple they didn't seem to have another guy at the company who could tell what people wanted and how to market it. They just produced more and more beige boxes. When Jobs returned to Apple they brought out the iMac G3, which was almost entirely Steve Jobs's idea (you can see what an All-In-One Mac without Jobs looks like if you look at the Performa 5200 (it's ugly)). He brought the company up again. As little as I like Steve Jobs, that is the one thing he did that deserves my admiration. You can see what crappy products Apple has brought out since he died in 2011. It is almost a shame he built up this "Apple-Status" for his company in retrospect. Okay, I'm starting to rant. bye bye.
