Where did you get that adaptor? Also that laptop can barely manage 8.1, 7.something is the best for it

Agreed, I was running 7 on the 520, but I needed 8 for some program, 9 was tried but slowed the machine to a crawl. Are you referring to the ethernet or the pcmcia adapter?

internet through Ethernet ok, but what are you plugged in, an old WEP router?

Absolutely. If you can find a dial up internet service provider in this day and age. The other option would be to use an ethernet dongle and just set up the TCP/IP settings manually. The downside is limited usability.
