In this video, I will show you the steps you must take to take advantage of the Apple Pro RAW file now available on Apple IOS 14.3. I will show you the proper settings in both Camera and Photos in your Settings, then discuss aspect ratio and why that is important. Lastly I will discuss how to transfer your RAW file to either you MacBook or iMac to process like any other RAW file in Lightroom or whatever RAW processor you might choose.

Nothing here about transferring photos as RAW images which is the whole point

You must've missed it! He actually stated it but it could've been easily missed. I’ve been searching for this answer and finally found it in this video. Unfortunately, the solution needs to happen before taking the photo. Don mentioned that you need to make sure you're on 4:3 aspect ratio for RAW, or you'll run into issues with transferring it off of your phone. Hope that helps! Good luck! 👍🏼

BTW, he says it at 5:18.

Hey Don. Great video! So I’ve been having trouble transferring RAW images out of Photos onto my MacBook in full RAW format. It transfers a downsized jpeg instead of the full quality RAW image even after tuning off all the things you mentioned. I hate editing in photos because it’s so limiting and lacking professional features. I want to work with the RAW files in another photo editing app. Does airdrop allow you to put the files on your desktop instead of instead of photos? Thanks!

So it actually doesn't matter what aspect ratio image is in to extract Orig Raw file. It can be extracted in iCloud. Single or Multiple image batches. To do this select which files to download (Must be Raw of Course) select dropdown all the way top right with the 3 dots, choose "more download options", "Choose unmodified originals" then download. And there you go.

Yes, airdropping just transfers photo as JPEG as does emailing the photo to my MacBook Pro from IPHONE 12 Pro Max. Currently transferred a photo to LR Mobile and attempted syncing it to LR Classic which did not work. I have spent way too much time trying to figure this all out. Apple needs to make it easier to export raw files as raw. Plugging phone in hasn't worked either. Won't go into detail what happened when I did this.

Did you ever find a solution to getting RAW images from an iPhone to a Mac system? I'm shocked this is so hard to figure out and that no one yet, that I've seen on KZbin has shown how too!
@diggity-dang

I've been searching too and this is the first video that actually mentioned the solution! Unfortunately, it seems you have to know this beforehand (ie. Before taking the photo), as he stated it needs to be in 4:3 aspect ratio. Something about cropping in on the sensor restricts from transferring it as RAW.

Hi Don, like me, you enjoy talking. I think it would be helpful if you created another version of this video where you went through the 3 steps without any side story. It could easily be a very helpful 30 second short. 😎🤙

As an ex semi-pro photographer (I made some of my living from photography ) who used to carry a full kit but sadly a back injury prevented this I was interested to watch this video as smartphones are my cameras now. Just returned to Apple after a two-year hiatus with a Huawei, great telephoto lens but inconsistent look between lenses. My question is after getting the Raw file to a program that will process them can one make a better image or has Appple made such a good job with the algorithms that it's not really worth the time and effort? At the time of writing I am using an iPhone 13 Pro max and haven't extensively tested it's photographic potential yet.

I have yet to find a video that shows how to Airdrop my RAW images to my MacBook Pro. They only come over in jpeg format, even though I've had my settings aligned with what I've seen and as you've noted on the set up of Pro Raw extra. Maybe we can't export via Airdrop in RAW is what I'm gathering. Perhaps only via attaching to my computer via cable then?

Tested it out. When I tried to Airdrop the 16:9 files, it transferred the JPEGs only. But when I tried to transfer the 4:3 files, it transferred the DNG. Ridiculous, but looks like that is what it is, for now.

@@OtherUserofYT I just got an iPhone that can shoot RAW. Here's the workflow to get DNG to PC. 1. Shoot RAW (obviously) 2. Go to Photos, find the photo(s) 3. Share button and then at top tap "Options" 4. Choose "All Photos Data," tap "iCloud Link" (it should move format to "Current") and tap "Done." 5. Email yourself iCloud Link 6. Click link and Sign In to your iCloud account to access more download options 7. Once signed in, your photo should show up and in the top right corner there are 3 blue dots, click that and go to "More Download Options" 8. Download "Unmodified Originals" and finally you get the privilege of accessing your RAW/DNG photos.

The explanation is partially wrong and as a whole useless. Correct is: The crop factor (4:3, 16:9 or square) doesn't matter, it is ignored (remember it is a RAW file, we transfer). The important part is: After choosing the photo you want to sent with AirDrop, you need to into "Options" (up on the screen) before sending it. Here you need to activate "All photodata" (last item on the menu), and then send it. In your download folder you will see another folder (named like "IMG_9999"). Open it and you can see both the jpeg and the DNG (raw) file. Use the DNG file to edit in Lightroom, Camera Raw, or what you like. (Caveat: "Of course" this only works with Mac computers).
