I saw the interview where the Apple exec explained why only the AirPods Pro 2 USB-C could do it. They did add a 5GHz radio to the AirPods but did not explain the protocol. It’s highly unlikely it’s using WiFi, but rather a direct AirPods to Vision Pro connection for the ultra-low latency required. Why they didn’t put it into the iPhone 15’s is anyone’s guess, but it’s a niche enough feature (few can hear the difference) that I doubt they did it for marketing reasons, seeing as they didn’t bother to cover it at the iPhone event.

For amazing headphones with lossless features already built in and even better sound quality with infinite battery life, buy Apple's own $20 wired Earpods. I keep them on hand, initially to use while driving my motorcycle. This way if one pod falls out of my ear, I'm not losing an expensive AirPod to the road. But even outside of that, I use them more than I would have expected. Even though I have Airpods 1 and 2 and some studio quality AudioTechnica over-ear headphones, I use my Earpods a lot. As an audiophile I expected more from Apple. They have nearly infinite research and development, and if they really wanted to they could design a headphone that is high tech [ANC and with a lossless codec] with driver technology to knock the socks off of even audiophiles. As it stands, they could get lossless signals but none of their headphones/earphones will be able to utilize it, a wired 80 dollar headphone will still sound better.

5ghz is the frequency. It is true that 5ghz can not reach as far as 2.4 ghz with the same power. (This is bcs the wavelengths are shorter). But the range is very dependent on the power supplied to the antenna. I think the battery life of the airpods pro would be too short if the range is extended. And I think thats why it can only work with vision pro.

The issue here is technical. If the lossless requires such a high bandwidth, that it requires 5GHz, it won’t work reliable on a iPhone. With the phone in your pocket, the AirPods in your ears while moving outside, you could reduce the connection on 5GHz by a lot. You can even test this in your home by your phone alone. Your phone will drop out of 5GHz WiFi and goes on 2.4GHz if you start running when in your pocket pretty fast. On the vision it is so close that it may work in this case as well but I guess nobody will run around with the vision anyway. For the iPhone they would need to increase the antenna size and the power to it for it to work even while running on a 1m+ distance on your body.

My guess is it’s all for stretching out quarterly earnings. They don’t need a boost in Q4 as the iPhone will lead this quarter along with new iPads and hopefully macs. Q1 2024 is always slow. I guess they’re keeping the same name because there isn’t enough changes to market it as a new device. They didn’t really do much to the H2 chip at all outside of a minor tweak that most people wouldn’t notice (though I do). They didn’t change anything with the technology itself truly: nothing new with the audio system (outside of updating the chip to a higher frequency), no new design, no new big features (not qualifying lossless audio), etc. It’s honestly just a press release product. I think they’re saving the 3rd generation name for something big. This seems to just be adding compatibility for the Vision Pro and I imagine that Apple is about to discontinue the lightning case variant of the AirPods Pro 2 and are just finishing the production contracts they’re obligated to and the remaining stock they have.

5GHz is just a frequency. The protocol matters, but can be changed for different engineering decisions. For example, how many Vision Pros are going to be in the same room? Maybe we don’t need as much collision avoidance. What if they haven’t released it because the FCC hasn’t licensed it yet? Said change above seems reasonable, but would be an interference-nightmare on a subway or office.

I don’t understand Apple when they make AirPods Pro 2 lossless capable because the earphones are doing so much computational audio that there’s not much left of the original sound for the user to enjoy. Does Apple even know why audiophiles wants lossless audio? I have my doubts. They make lossless sound lossy this way. Ugg. I’m gonna keep it 100% … Apple has annoyed me with their handling of this. But also think you’re using bad technical and audio analysis. 1) Bluetooth chips (receivers and broadcast) must have a chip that by design supports lossless audio. Wifi uses a different chipset and can’t be substituted in just because it can use the same frequency. 2) Use the basic wired Apple headphones. The only official way to get losses currently and have substantially better audio quality than airpods w. the same size / spec drivers (older actually). All the proof you need the audio folks you’re referencing are wrong. It’s SO much better.

This whole USBc thing seams to be a bit of a forced issue with Apple and I guess they don't have all their ducks in a row. But 5GHz is probably not a real solution. Audio geos trough Bluetooth and it doesn't even use the Low Energy standard. That is something the Bluetooth Consortium is working on. So to go over a WiFi stadium is just way to power hungry. Qualcom seams to have a patent for lossless audio over bluetooth. But it's not in any device yet and we know how much Apple loves Qualcom 😅

Not sure if you watched the full interview on Brian Tong’s channel but Ron said a few things. He described the H2 chip as a dedicated “Bluetooth audio” chip and that the Bluetooth chip in iPhone is designed to do more than just audio. I wish Brian had asked more follow-up questions but based on this response I think we can infer a few things. For one thing, it’s not uncommon for Apple to trial something new on a small(er) product category before expanding to iPhone. We see that with Apple Watch basically every year at this point. But more importantly, it’s clear there were different priorities with A17 Pro but that doesn’t mean things can’t or won’t change with A18 Pro. That is, once they learn they can reliably deliver lossless audio through this new Bluetooth protocol they’ve developed for Vision Pro and AirPods Pro, then they can scale it to other products lines like iPhone
