The highlight of Apple Vision Pro - Apple's first $3,499 VR/AR glasses, which was announced last night.
1️⃣ The emphasis in the presentation was on overcoming one of the main barriers to using VR glasses - their closeness (opacity), which leads to the situation: "I don't see anyone, I can't be seen either."
Key features to solve this problem and improve the user experience in general:
• Unique rounded external OLED display that shows your eyes when talking to people around (EyeSight function)
• Recognition of people around - if someone approaches you, the helmet will show it in VR
• Gaze control (eyes as a pointer) + finger gestures. Siri and Voice Input
• Reconstruction of the user's face into a 3D avatar for use in video calls
2️⃣ As Apple claimed, this is "The most advanced personal electronics device ever"
• More than 4K resolution per eye
• Two processors: M2 and R1 (for AR)
• 12 cameras, lots of microphones and sensors, lidar
• Shooting photos and videos in 3D
• Multitasking (finally!)
• Support for iPhone and iPad applications
• Optic ID - iris scanner, works with Apple Pay
• Spatial Audio - scanning of the environment, furniture, and objects around, including the materials of their surfaces (!) for audio processing and precise positioning of each sound source
• Support for Bluetooth accessories: touchpad, keyboard, game controllers, etc.
3️⃣ Finally, the main thing for us:
• Native Unity support and tools for easy porting of existing 3D games and applications from other platforms
• Start of sales in 2024
💵 Expensive? Certainly! But this is not a mass-market device, and certainly not a competitor to Meta Quest 3. But HoloLens and Magic Leap should definitely be nervous.
It is not yet clear how close the presentation is to reality and how it will look and work live. But it seems that this is the Tesla Roadster moment for mixed reality and really is a "One more thing ..."
💡Apple has broken into the XR space, raising the bar for design and usability to a whole new level. It does not matter whether these glasses will be commercially successful. But the fact is that this is a tangible shake-up for the entire industry, pushing it to grow. More advanced and much cheaper devices await us in the future. And apparently a new wave of hardware and software startups wanting to catch this trend.
