I think it’s stupid. iOS is like a gated community on purpose. Being a gated community is one of the selling points of an iOS device. If they don’t want to live in a gated community, then they should move rather than change the door codes to let all the dregs and riff raff in. It’s not like Apple surprised ANYONE with it’s locked-down nature. I just don’t get buying something that does what you don’t like to begin with. Devs complain that “developing for android doesn’t make enough money… so let’s make iOS into android!”. Complete trash.

I think this is bad news. The real issue here is that Apple is charging far too much for what they provide. If the 30% (or 15% fee for smaller businesses) simply would be lowered for (in-)app purchases to say max 5 or 10%, most businesses would not bather.
@liquidmark5081
@liquidmark5081 Жыл бұрын
30% cut is not too much to ask for the 1’s and 0’s that developers are selling. 30% is the cut the distributors have taken for PRINTED media and PHYSICAL MERCHANDISE for ages and the actual manufacturers and publishers had to pay per-unit manufacturing and printing costs on top of that and paying that 30% fee was good enough for them. Developers have to pay for development of their software and advertisement (manufacturers and publishers did the same) but after paying those fees their overhead is minor. It’s not as severe as having to pay manufacturing or printing costs per unit and eating possible massive losses if they manufacture more than they can sell or eating losses if they manufacture too little. Selling software is a license to print money. If apple wants 30% of the money you just printed on their platform, selling an infinite number of 1’s and 0’s, then I don’t see what the issue is.

I was a die hard Android user for over a decade. The appeal of sideloading apps wore off, and I just wanted a secure, reliable device. What worries me is a lot of Chiniezium products require their apps to work. If you have to use their App Store or side load an app, there’s no protections. This will also encourage piracy, making it much easier to install apps that “fell off the back of a truck”

Apple is gonna have one hell of a job in making the OS secure if this goes through. Being the most predominant phone and tablet line in the world, this is like an invitation card for hacks/malware/Trojans etc. I love being able to side-load apps and am all in for more choices, but security is one of the main selling points for apple and it’s what sets them apart. If they can’t secure their platforms when this happens then there’s not much difference anymore between them and android platforms when it comes to software.

This might be the worst thing happening to iPhones which legit thrive due to their perceived sense of security in certain nations. It is seriously detrimental to innovation too because down the line tech will change and what they might standardise now may be the worst option in the future, times change. Third party apps stores such as Google Play and Samsung Stores are pretty good but since now people have access to anything, there's a lot that can go wrong. I'm not an apple sheep because forcing a company, especially a tech one where things change every year, to comply with what seems to be the current best is absurd.

Third party appstores and sideloading has a potential for problems, mainly malware. You can look at what is going on in Android community for reference :) I switched over from Android to iOS ecosystem in early 2021 and personally I didn't much use other places to get apps than Play Store. This might be different in this case as Apple takes a pretty big slice of in-app sells, AFAIK. It was a bummer that I couldn't buy Kindle books straight from the Kindle app because Amazon didn't want to pay those fees. So that definitely plays the part. Sideloading on the other hand sounds really cool to me, especially if it really allows me to develop apps to my personal use. Currently I can develop PWAs but that's not the same thing (exactly). If this really will be a case, then I might pull the trigger and even buy a MacBook in order to be able to do so (as I am certain that Apple won't make it possible to develop iOS apps in Windows/Linux or iPad even after this). In any case this makes it all the more important for people to think before installing apps.

As always, the simple solution is overlooked - Apple could stop acting like an authoritarian regime and charge less money for work they are not actually doing. To the sideloading naysayers The file structure of iOS is sandboxed so that high security can be maintained even if sideloading is enabled. Also, iOS16 added a developer mode, which I believe will become an option to install apps from an unknown source, as in android. Based on the above, I believe the iPhone will continue to be as secure as ever even if sideloading is enabled.

lol you’re clearly misinformed about how all this works, there is already malware on iPhone, we can’t rid of malware but malware on iPhone is almost nonexistent, even Apple will tell you this is due sideloading not being allowed. Isn’t macOS sandboxed too? Yet Apple claims the level of malware on Mac is unacceptable. Sideloading is regularly exploited on Mac. And Apple turns down many attempts to put malware on the App Store every year, and a few have escaped even Apple in the past. If sandboxing was enough to protect us Apple wouldn’t need to install an antivirus on its devices. And an antivirus can only protect against discovered viruses added to a database

I was adverse to having other App stores until I had problems with double billing for In-App payments (buying Robucks in Roblox). On purchasing, I would be double billed within a second of approving my kid's in app purchases. I would later try to get a refund on the second purchase but these were often refused. I would then try a refund on the first purchase only to have that refund refused also. Anything I had lodged two refund requests would never be refunded, though others requested via a support call were actioned. Noting I have no ability to cross check either via the app or Apple's portal. The in app interface is incapable of requesting a second purchase within about 20 seconds of the first, nor can the approval process approve multiple purchase in one. Secondly, there is no reconcilled transaction records in the App where the in app purchase is made, so I cannot cross reference a legitimate purchase against the incorrect one. Accessing someone via support to speak to directly is an obfuscated process and when I was eventually able to speak with someone at Apple, they blamed the App developer (Roblox). My scenario shows that the in app process is unregulated, lacks purchase traceability at the 3d party and lacks safegaurds for double billing in the Apple side. I now welcome 3rd party app stores but do want proper consumer level protections and regulations whilst maintaining expectations on security.

You'd be able to choose between the app stores then and decide for yourself if you want to pay apple the extra cut for using the default app store. That I think would be the greatest solution but it might not be what happens.

I really don't get it why people want this. This is one of the main selling points of iOS and the App Store. This is one of the reasons I switched from Android. Google Play is filled to the rim with junk and scam apps. I used to jailbreak my iPhones. When I was a kid. Now I just want something that works reliably, and I want to know that the apps I install are reasonably vetted. Epic Games are just greedy. And for some reason people think that they are some kind of heroes that are fighting for the people and the greater good. That's bullshit. They just want more money, just like any other company. But I think that it's fair that Apple gets a cut since they've built this OS, delivers this platform, and apps that live up to the standards get to be in the App Store. In the pursuit of "fairness" we will only get the same mess of an App Store as they've got on Android. And Apple will just increase the margins on the hardware to compensate... The iPhones will get more expensive, and we'll get a fragmented and messy App Store.

The App Store generates billions of dollars and is what helps Apple make the bulk of its money nowadays. While it will lead to more iPhone or iPad sales in the long run Apple’s revenue will go down. The Mac can install pretty much any app but it doesn’t have half the market share PCs have. I like having one secure place to get apps that are offered by developers. Well, some thoughts… * Epic may never be allowed back, so no App Store for them. * Apps may still need to go through Apple for malware scanning. * Developers may still need to sign up to Apple Developer subscription to get the code signing certificate. * Stores will have to have a review team themselves. * And they need to make sure, nobody just downloads an app on one store and puts it for sale in another store. * Alternative app stores may not be cheaper. * Apple may charge a commission to pay for the software needed. * There may be legal problems if a third App Store has a malware app looking like a legit one in Apple's app store by using same icon, name and description. * For us customers it may be worse as some companies will force you to install their store, so you have soon 20 stores. And all with different accounts, difference refund policies. * As a developer, I want to keep stuff easy for me and my customers, so I would prefer to use Apple's store and not deal with other stores.

Meaning of Apple doesn’t approve of it you won’t be able to side load it so it’s gonna be the same thing as the App Store.
