Great video. Can you explain the difference between Digital Cinema (P3-DCI), Digital Cinema (P3-P65), and Apple Display (P3-600 nits). I use FCPX a lot and want to make sure my Studio Display is optimized for color correcting video footage. Thanks!
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
P3 DCI white point is a generic Digital Cinema standard with a white point that sits at 6300K, P3-D65 specify the white point at 6500K, hence D65. Apple P3 is technically supposed to be Display P3 which the color gamut is slightly off from DCI-P3. And the 600 nits marks just tell you that the brightness for HDR will get mapped to 600 nits at peak brightness not 1600 nits XDR with 1000 nits sustained. For color grading footage I would recommend using the the reference mode. Since Apple Display regardless of option is more for content consumption not creation.

Art, is there any chance that you can make a lesson on how to QA factory calibration for specific color profiles on displays? Say for instance, QA a display so as to know if it is representing Rec709 with accuracy from the factory.
@ArtIsRight2 жыл бұрын
Can't with consumer software and not really well at all with free ware. You are looking at software solution from CalMan for you to do something like that. But then you need a PC / pattern generator to run the test to which you are running a synthetic on the display in away and sometimes it will show you the native panel gamut that can be quite large but not uses accessible on a daily use. So lot of complication here.
@diego-esau2 жыл бұрын
@@ArtIsRight Oh, I understand that completely. I initially thought that DisplayCAL or similar software would offer us tools to perform QA with devices like the i1 display pro. Then it seems like if we wanted to work with a monitor's factory calibration, we would have to really trust the brand quality assurance, or otherwise do software or hardware calibration ourselves just to be sure. Thanks again. Your content is pretty helpful to my team: we use to struggle with color management.

Thanks for the video. Regarding max luminance: On hover it says, "Range is [48-500]". Do you know if that scale corresponds with the Brightness slider? And do you know why that scale stops at 500 if the Studio Display is 600 nits?
@ArtIsRight2 жыл бұрын
On these display because of the OS integrate, I would think that the slider is more linear than other display manufacturer. As far as why it stops at 500, my speculation would probably be that 600 nit is reserved for HDR tonal mapping.

Hi! I just received my brand new M2 MacBook Pro 16-Inch and my Studio Display. Compared to the MacBook Pro’s display, the Studio Display is too blue and too bright (even if I lower its brightness!). I actually like the warmth of the MacBook Pro, and I wish the Studio Display could be a little warmer as well. The displays are using their default settings: MacBook Pro: Apple XDR Display (P3-1600 nits) Studio Display: Apple Display (P3-600 nits) I turned True Tone off. It is really important to me that both displays look the same as much as possible (I know it’s not 100% possible, and that’s OK). I see the differences mainly when I'm on Safari or when I'm on the Finder with windows open; the big white windows show the warmth and brightness differences the most. However, when I open my photos in Photoshop, they seem almost identical on both screens. 🤷♂ If you have any thoughts, suggestions or ideas, I'm all ears! Thanks!
@ArtIsRight Жыл бұрын
I would start with reference mode on both, Fine tune calibration and let it be what it will be. You can try to do a proper calibration but that may or may not work for matching. These display uses a different type of backlight, one is PFS Phosphor via MiniLED arrangement. The other is just a backside diffusion of GB-LED on a 5K panel. Not to mention the LCD panel are different as well.

What about datacolorx2 ultra , elite or pro version ? How does this compare to calibrite ones ? It
@ArtIsRight6 ай бұрын
Let me say this: If you have a Spyder, it works. You don’t need to upgrade yet; keep using it. But if you are looking for a new one, on an engineering level, Calibrite is better in many ways, including heritage and lineage. TLDR Calibrite devices are powered by X-Rite, have better sensors, and run on a better color engine, Prism. In addition, X-Rite, in its history, took over a company called Graytag Macbeth, which has been known as the best company in color management for a long time. So much of their tech now is rooted in Graytag. Now price & engineering reason correlation. Calibrite devices like X-Rite have better sensors, and the software stores the spectral data necessary to calibrate the display. This means that as time passes, when new display tech emerges, Calibrite can release a software update that would accommodate for new display type, assuming that said new display can be measured reasonably by the current sensor tech. Spyder, however, stores this data on the device, and it is not user- -upgradable. So when a new display type comes out, that measurement sensor is obsolete or can’t calibrate the new display type anymore. Yes, Calibrite devices are a premium over Spyder, but they do last way longer; case in point, ColorChecker Display Pro is the same as i1Display Pro, which has been out for more than a decade already and it has continued to support newer display tech that has come on the market. In this time frame, Spyder has released 3 new devices already. So yes, even though their devices are cheaper, you would have to buy 2, if not 3, devices to calibrate newer display tech. As affordable as they may be, by the time you purchase the second one, it already costs more than a Calibrite Pro device. In addition, if you constantly update OS, Spyder has been known to drop new OS support on older devices. So many times you would have to buy a new device out of necessity too-lots to think about here.

Premier you can get away with Display P3, but if you use resolve as well, I would probably use REC 709. Gamma 2.4 or BT1886 which is an option, they are so close to each other. Other than that 80-120 nits of brightness based largely on your editing environment.

My problem with running scaled is that it impacts viewing photos in preview and in the browser (LR handles it well). You can use D50 but it is not necessary. The goal is for the white point of the display to match the color of the light. So with this said you can just keep the setting at D65 and what you have to do is get a 6500K light bulb to view the print and you are set.

Great video, but I have some questions: 1. Why would I limit my display's brightness? If I color grade a video with 100 Nits, wouldn't it all be blown out if someone watches it on a brighter display, e.g. a normal display with 350 Nits, or an iPhone Pro with over a 1000 Nits? 2. Why would I colorgrade my video with e.g. the BT.709 Preset, if most people would probably watch it on displays that are set to Apple P3 (Apple's standard setting)? I compared some of my videos with my display set to Apple P3 and BT.709 and the difference is enormous! According to Apple's support page, the BT.709 preset should be used for video editing, but I don't really understand why. If most people will watch it in P3, shouldn't I colorgrade it in P3?

Yes lots of misconception here, luminance and gamma are 2 distinctly different things that works in totally different ways. I’m thankful a global tech giant like Samsung, had the audacity to replicate a plastic version of apples overpriced monitor and give customers who don’t want to spend 2 grand on a screen a much MUCH more affordable alternative. As much as I may not advocate for it, each has their own needs and justification. Each to their own.

@@ArtIsRight so if i keep the standard profile that was on when i purchased the display (i think is p3 d65 600) ..will not give great results in photoshop or lightroom? I noticed that the new photoshop version use display p3 colorspace with all new m1 mac's ..same in camera raw.. have u noticed that Arti?

With Apple display P3 is all that you have really, let alone it being good or not. 600 is too high for brightness especially if you print. it is about 6x higher than print standard. And yes PS is defaulting to P3 in general not only on "M" series Mac.

@@ArtIsRight ok thanks. P3 600 is the name of the factory preset:) i never set my display higher than 100-120:) if i set it at 600 i will get blind hah.

@@ArtIsRight so ps is now changing from adobe to p3? Smartphones,androids the same.. i quess only serious pro photographers who print would get adobe rgb monitors in the future ..it seems that p3 is the future for everything other than printing
