My own protocol for repotting has changed from a 2 yr or 3 yr schedule to a more intuitive approach of watching the trees vigor slow down. There's a point with my honeysuckle that they go gang buster's following a repot and kinda level off a while. But once they become sluggish I know it's time to repot. Although if I have a mature image that I want to maintain I may even hold off a while to appreciate the lesser work of slowed growth. But with my honeysuckle the biggest danger I have to deal with is a pot getting rootbound. Honeysuckle have an aggressive root system and can choke a pot quickly. Thanks again Nigel.

yeah Nigel, the inevitable will take place later this week. MY crepe myrtles growing in the ground are leafing out, and the mercury is going to drop to 28 Wednesday night, and 30 on Thursday night. Possibly draping a sheet over them, or I may just do nothing, cross my fingers and hope for the best. Love the apple tree, and the video as always. Nigel Saunders, The Bonsai Zone thats too bad mate...hope you get it strong again. Have one in the ground im digging up in spring.i know they are prone to a few leaf problems.ill be using systemics and will give it an LS winter wash when dormant and again at bud swell.
@philipnorthfield6 жыл бұрын
Nigel have you heard of micorrhizal fungi when you wash the root system of your tree you are removing these they are essential to healthy vigorous growth of the plant. Over time you will weaken it to a point where it will become susceptible to pest and disease like rust etc.... Its such a beautiful example of a difficult species to bonsai it would be a shame to lose it.
@TheBonsaiZone6 жыл бұрын
Micorrhiza fungi can be a benefit, but it can also use a lot of the trees resources. Up to 20 percent of the trees energy can go to feeding the fungi and the roots will actually try to keep the fungi population under control. In a bonsai pot, the tree is fed well and has no need for fungi to further extend the reach of the root system. I fed my trees with a chemical fertilizer, so the fungi aren't needed to break down organic matter into a usable form. This tree already had rust disease, but I'm hoping to get it back to a healthy state. I have read that aspirin mixed with water helps control the rust bacteria. This is just based from what I have read, but I'm always trying to learn more! Thanks!
@c_farther52087 жыл бұрын
This is my favorite video. I just learned so much, enjoyed every part of it. Could I use Cactus soil? Sounds like pretty similar soil.

Thanks i love it can you explain how to start to make one from an apple tree? thanks i follow in love with it i never had one but i will! All the best
@TheBonsaiZone8 жыл бұрын
+THE GOOD OF LIFE The apple trees can be started from seed, cuttings, or nursery stock. It is best to start from a seed or a wild tree from the ground. Many of the trees you can find are grafted, and can make an ugly bulge in your trunk.
@Jefferdaughter8 жыл бұрын
Grafted trees can always be airlayered above the graft, of course. Aside from volunteer apple trees, or wild ones in areas where those grow, crabapples usually make better bonsai specimens if one wants to enjoy it with the fruit on it, due to scale, and the drain on the tree to make fruit.

I agree that the thickness of the trunk requires a deep pot. However, the height of the tree contradicts the balance of the pot you've chosen, so I think another pot with less depth would be a better compromise ...... my opinion, anyway.

BackSeatHump I agree, a shallower pot, almost half the depth would look much better, I'll keep my eyes open for one!

@wolfgangbonsaiwichtel84018 жыл бұрын
Hi Nigel! Great tree and great Video, thanks for providing this. But I`ve got a few things. Is there any reason why you don`t wire the tree down to the pot? As far as i know it is important to fix that well, so the fine feeder roots can recover without being constantly disturbed by movements. (wind, touching, etc.) and i also agree with a few other comments concerning the size of the pot. For my opinion little smaller in general and at least one third shallower. did the tree recover from its disease?
@TheBonsaiZone8 жыл бұрын
+Wolfgang Bonsaiwichtel Hi Wolfgang. I don't wire my trees in the pot for a couple of reasons. When filling in the soil around the tree the tree will be loose at first and then as you work the soil into the roots the tree will firm up in the pot. If the tree is wired in, you cannot feel this effect and you may end up with poor soil contact with the roots. The other reason is just to avoid wire marks on your roots. I have never lost a tree from not wiring it into the pot, I just keep them out of the wind for a couple of weeks after repotting. A slightly smaller pot would look better and I am hoping for a good growing season from the tree this year, I'm not sure if it will recover from the blight, time will tell.

Do you still have this one? would love to see it's progression?
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
I do, but it is not doing well. It got Apple rust and it is slowly getting weaker and will probably die. It was one of my best trees, I'm sorry to see it go.

Any thoughts on chlorinated vs rainwater?
@TheBonsaiZone7 жыл бұрын
Rain water is always best to use. I collect water in barrels for the summer and I have a barrel full inside for the winter. If I run out of rainwater and have to use tap water, I try and let in sit for a few days so the chlorine evaporates off. The water in my area is full of lime. The lime coats your roots, pot and the leaves. You cannot mist the trees with tap water, it leaves a whitish layer of lime on everything. If I run out of water in winter, I'll melt snow or collect water dripping off the roof.

This bonsai reminds me of the Bowthorpe Oak tree in Lincolnshire, England. Tremendously thick trunk and small reconciled stature. You could possibly make a replica since it has many of the same beautiful features, including nebari.(just thought I'd mention it)

The tree is not doing very well, it got apple rust disease and most of the branches have died, it is a shame as it was one of my best trees. it is still alive and I won't give up on it, it will just never be the same tree. Thank you, I have seen pictures of the Bowthorpe Oak, a wonderful tree indeed!

Hey Nigel, so much character on this tree, i'd like to see an update on it.

An update will be coming, however the tree is not doing well, it has gotten rust disease and much of the branching has died. It's too bad, it was one of my favorite trees. Growing fruit trees is always risky. I'll have to see how it does this spring.

Beautiful tree. We have a lot of Apple orchards here in Pennsylvania and I've always loved this species of tree. I love the bark and the hollow. Is this tree still with you?

Hey Nigel, do you have any aquariums set up in your house?

What is your soil ratio on this tree Nigel? I have a crabapple bonsai and I used Akadama, Pumice, Lava rocks even amount, is that ok you think? Thank you.
@TheBonsaiZone5 жыл бұрын
That should be perfect! You will have to fertilize regularly. I use 1/2 perlite and 1/2 turface.
