I think that is primarily an Asian custom. I've seen some Chinese dramas where handing an envelop containing to a grieving family member is done. I believe in part to help with funeral expenses.

Offering money to a grieving family is actually practiced outside of Japan as well, it's an optional practice. I've only known it to be obligatory if the person/family was directly involved with the death.

A simple search for the obituary would have fixed all of this. She would have known the truth and could have attended. Not his fault she cared so little about a woman she claims to have adored that she didn't both to make sure. And she was just buried and died without her knowing, but she's been going to the grave and leaving flowers.... This was so convoluted I couldn't finish it.
