Waited for the Ultra 2, wanted to see what the black titanium would look like, however this didn’t happen, in fact the changes were so minimal that today I bought a brand new Apple Watch Ultra 1 for a discounted £660. In eco mode, this model went from 60hrs to 72hrs contrary to what you said (no change). Also, I suspect this model will perform better in this mode with GPS position picked more often. It was a recurring critic that Apple Watch Ultra had such a lousy GPS trace in eco mode. Things may have improved on this aspect…

Agree. Been Garmin for years but have pre ordered Ultra 2. It’s £50 cheaper than last years, brighter and I’m all about the double tap, looks super useful. The narrative of buy lasts years is just dull. If it’s ok with everyone I want the latest 😉

I just got the ultra 1 for 699.99 in Canada normally 1099.99 plus you can add gestures in the accessibility settings. Best thing about the ultra 2 is the price drop of the ultra 1!

Why does everybody keep saying that the new watch face has more complications than any previous model? Doesn't the infograph watch face have eight complications? I am on a series 4 Apple Watch with the infograph, and it has age complications.

I’ve got the ultra 1, and with the 10 software it has nearly all the features as the ultra 2, it even has the new watch face. The only thing that it won’t have is the double tap which is something that I think will be quickly turned off as it’s just gimmicky. So I’ll happily stick to what I have already.

This has existed for years. And isn’t specific to the ultra. I imagine that Apple have optimized it on the ultra 2 but it would be a possible accuracy increase? It doesn’t materially change the use of the watch beyond moving the options out of accessibility.

I would agree with most others that It's not worth buying the Ultra 2 to review. I wanted a fitness tracker watch to replace my great Casio Pro Trek, and after quite a bit of research, I decided on the Garmin Instinct 2 Solar. My main resaon was battery life and the rugged G Shock style of it. I really like having a solar watch. My watch is almost always hovering arround the 35-41 day mark and I quite regularly use the torch function, but not much GPS usage. I have been wondering if I should have spent extra and gone for the Fenix or Epix. Obviously they are colour screens etc, but to be honest, I actually like the design of the Instinct 2 better. It looks a lot more military compatible. Notifications are enough for me too, rather than making calls from the watch. If I have left my phone in another room, I don't miss calls, because the watch buzzes and I can make a quick dash. My Wife tells me that since I bought a watch that pairs up to my phone, she can get hold of me more.....Oh no! :) Sleep tracking has also been a very interesting exercise, since I always wear the wach. I could not do that on my Pro trek. Finally, I would like to see you review other Garmin watches, such as the new Venu 3 and how that might compare to an Apple Watch 9. I still cannot decide what watch to buy my Wife for her birthday next month. I waited for the 9 to come out and was only mildly impressed. It's the battery life that lets Apple down. Some people have said, what's the issue because I can just keep charging it, but we do sometimes take multi-day hikes and I personally like the secure feeling I get from a watch that doesn't need constantly charging each night.

Thank you for the feedback Mark. I'm a Garmin Epix gen 2 user and have been looking to MAYBE change over to the AW Ultra and was really hoping the AW Ultra 2 would have a little better battery life. As you know, the garmin's battery life is really great. But apple decided to make an already bright screen even brighter...Uhmmmm why? So nope...I won't buy an AW Ultra 2...maybe if I get an AW Ultra 1 cheaper, I might buy that.

All the way through the Apple Presentation for the AWU2, I kept repeating the mantra, “but have you increased the battery life?” And no they had not (they left that nugget right at the end!). Zero interest. For a watch such as this, that is meant to be used in freezing temperatures,halfway up a mountain, that is important. Otherwise just get a normal Apple Watch. Who are you kidding? Have you noticed if your Watch Ultra battery is not quite as long lasting after a full years of use (charging & discharging a small battery really hammers its life expectancy)?

I did the trade, got $411 for my U1. The U2 has 64GB vice 32GB, brighter display, onboard Siri and better Low Power battery life. Plus, it’s a tad faster in a few apps and rebooting. Other than that, no reason to switch. My main reason was the 64GB storage. My U2 is my wearable iPod! The new SiP will be the one for at least the next 3 years. So, I upgrades.

I've ordered one. I tried a Garmin and it is just so archaic to use. The stats that everyone loves about the Garmins are so inaccurate for proper training that they're not a selling point. The battery is amazing on the Garmins but that is it. The Ultra is going to outperform 99% of people that need in a training watch plus it has so many other features that allow you not to carry a phone.

I was considering the Ultra a few weeks back but, when push came to shove, I went with the Epix Pro Gen 2 51mm. It's got 31 days battery, does everything I need it to do from a smartwatch perspective, and it's better looking IMO. No brainer.

The Ultra 2 has an additional 12 hours of battery life in low power mode. That is a big improvement. I don’t get why people are upset that the improvements didn’t match their own expectations for Apple. If you don’t want to upgrade that’s fine, but I was personally excited about a new way to interact with the watch. All the negative comments about how it isn’t better don’t change that.

The 15 Pro I feel didn’t go far enough. Apple were finally talking in photographic mm like Sony does but they still haven’t added manual overrides to the main camera app for another year. Why not finally add in split-screen multitasking like Samsung on the Max? And there was no mention of the video-out capabilities for those tasty PS4 games.

Don’t blame you, it was a disappointing upgrade. As someone who’s ran quite a few ultras but also an Apple guy, I’ve arrived at a two watch solution. I’ve had three Fenix and a couple of Suuntos. Currently it’s the Suunto Vertical when running and AW series 7. It was Garmin’s poor attempts at being smart that led me to the Vertical, I’m enjoying its simplicity. In theory the AW Ultra should be the one watch for me, but they don’t understand mapping.

I directly ordered one! But I have a Apple Watch Series 5 at the moment which have decreased battery life. So I need a new Apple Watch and I like to have an Ultra. In Germany they reduced the price to 899,- Euro. 100 bugs less then Ultra 1. Ok, maybe the U1 becomes cheaper in the next days or weeks. But now I get the newest version with better CPU, brighter display and nice color for the wristband. And a Garmin is no option, because of missing mobile connection, missing Apple Pay and most important the need to sync music like in the 90s. I‘m a runner and I love to have a fully connected mobile-phone-music-player-sports-tracker on my wrist that is fully compatible with my AirPods Pro. For me it is the perfect watch. But I agree that the new features are not enough to upgrade if somebody has a U1.

The ultra 2 is not for those who already have Apple Watch Ultra. It’s for those who didn’t buy last year, are in the market for a rugged watch, wants to be in the Apple ecosystem and don’t want a year old technology. It’s for this group. Unless it’s a new product category, nearly all products from every company- Apple, Samsung, Huawei etc are all just incremental upgrades. Just because a product doesn’t do what you want doesn’t mean it’s not good or the company is trying to rip you off. It simply means that product is not for you.

I am still using AWS7 and find it just fine for my needs. I may upgrade to the AWU1 someday but it would have to do something mine doesn't already do. As someone in the Apple ecosystem apart from the watch (I use Coros) that 15 event was embarrassing. Lack of innovation and more than 1h to present minor updates on all their hardware. This ultra was for me the biggest disappointment. It's ridiculous that a watch aimed at athletes or at least marketed as so, sees no real improvement on the battery or on software features that are really athlete oriented.Hey but it has a double tap 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I imagine Garmin,Coros, Polar or Suunto releasing a new iteration of a model without improving the battery life and the criticism that they would receive.

I can understand why there are no colour options to an extent, anyone thats ever had PVC coating on any sports watch before will know that within 6 months after you've banged it against doors, tables etc you will see the standard colour behind it. So for a watch thats meant to be 'rugged' and used on treking, diving etc I get it. It'll unfortunately be the same on the iPhones, underneath that nice blue coating will be the natural titanium colour, yes titanium itself is strong and probably the first iPhone you could use without a case, but within a few drops that coating will start to come off... I do like the orange ocean band, I have the orange Alpine loop and I've never used it because of how dirty it'd get!

The biggest advantage about the Apple Watch Ultra is meant to be about its battery life. Yes it is bigger and bigger is not always better. I have had Apple Watches since Version 1. Today I have an Apple Watch 5 and an Apple Watch 7. Both are connected to my iPhone 12 Pro Max. When I go to bed I swap my watches and put the one I took off on the charger. I thus use my Apple Watches 24 hours a day. I monitor my sleep and health data (heart etc) but don’t ever have battery problems. I get 24 hours a day usage every day. I don’t need the ULTRA and don’t need the Apple Watch 9. The only real new innovation is the fingers click. My watch is bright enough to read at any time particularly if one is selective on the Watch faces used. A faster processor is of no real benefit. I last updated to get more storage for the Music I listen to as I walk connecting my watch to my AirPods Pro or Beats Studio Buds. Can’t justify the spend.

I stick by my guns. You should review it all. Sell the old one and the update will only cost a couple of hundred dollars. There is no substitute for putting it on your wrist. The Garmin is for a special audience of outdoorsman. The Apple ultra series is their current best and works best with IOS. $799 is a little high for me right now, so I will stay with my Series 8.

Not much of an improvement I have first ultra and I will keep using it I wanted to see more from the ultra 2 what was presented was not enough. Hopefully next year is better.
