Once it has air integration and all the functions of Shearwater Teric then it's worth a buy for regular divers. Perhaps a few generations later 👍

Great review. I happen to have and Ultra as my daily, and recently got certified, so this is handy. As for the pay to play aspect…if you think about it…you can pay over $1,000 for a dive computer to strap to your arm. At $72/year, that would take you over 10 years to make up that delta…not a bad trade off for a recreational diver like me who will do a few vacations a year and dive a dozen times or so per year…

Even better for someone like me, a pure recreation diver that maybe only dive once or twice at most per year. I can just pay $5 for the day.

Great balanced review! One aspect of the Ultra watch, as attractive a package as it is, is the renewal of the gaskets. It doesn't seem to be available in all markets, and the pricing is opaque.

Really positioned for casual diving. Hoping there will be a wave of people that see that their watch has a cool functionality and want to try it out by learning to dive! If it's a way in, I'm all for it. The only downside of the sub model is the casual target. Regular divers will either already own a dive computer or want a dedicated piece for it, casual divers that don't mind occasionally chipping £5 for the day will also start to see that as barrier, another thing that needs to be done, another cost to add on. I already try not to think about £20 entry to a dive site, then the air - another £12-20/day, fuel there and back - maybe £20-50, food, accommodation etc. £5 is really nothing but it's another thing to remind you about cost if you're doing it that way.

Sorry, it is not acceptable that the computer stops calculating deco status etc at 40m. There could be several good reasons why someone might end up below 40m (down-current, rescuing a buddy, etc), even if only for a short period, and the computer should not simply stop working at that point. Maybe it should warn to ascend, and possibly even stop displaying data temporarily, but it makes the dive even less safe if the key safety instrument stops recording and calculating when it is most needed.

My thought exactly. If they do not add additional features, such as deeper diving and air integration, they would be foolish.

Nice overview. Cheers. I'm looking get back into diving after several years out of the water, so this is a super handy bit of kit. Not so wild about the subscription model, but as long as they do actively update the app regularly, then I guess its worth it. Air integration would be cool, but at the very least it'll be a brilliant back up computer for any diver.

I got my ultra since day one in Sep.. I was due for an upgrade anyway, the scuba option was a plus for me. To be honest after I got mine I finally decided to get my OWD certification, I’ve used my Ultra through all my course and worked just fine, obviously using only Depth at the time. After my course I’ve dived 18 more times and used a few computers (Cressi, Mares and scubapro) and all showed almost the same info all the time (depth,temp and diving time). I did have a problem with the Ultra while I was doing my deep diving certification, not under water though, after I finished a 30mts diving and I was at the diving centre the Ultra started to act funny, it looks like the action button was virtually stuck, that happened for like an hour but after that all was good. The next day I did my last diving of the course the 40mts dive all worked fine no problem after the dive but I put the watch in the charger at night and when I woke up the next day the watch was out and unresponsive. I had to make an appointment at an apple store and sent it, the got me a new one, so I don’t know what happened. All my diving has been with the Depth app, the Oceanic app was released the day I went to the apple store 😢 so I’ve not been able to test it, but I’ll do it next week in Tenerife. Saying this, I just got a Cressi Michelangelo as well just to use it as a “backup” - I’ll be diving with both anyway. Thanks for the review :)

Hey mate , did you have any troubles with salt water ? I used mine yesterday and the sea was saltier than usually and it seems like there’s salt inside the crown, while it was in charger the crown seemed stuck-ish. After rotating it couple of times it seems to be fixed but kinda worried. Today i made sure to run clean water on it after going into the sea. But can’t find useful info anywhere

As far as the depth goes, I agree that most recreational divers won't stray below 40 meters. The question is, though, "what if?". What does the app do if you go deeper? Just pause functioning until you go back above? Display a warning screen? Will it display your current depth or just say "too deep"?

Personally I am one of those guys that do get hit by the current limitations of the watch as a dive computer, so it isn't really for me. Considering that the closest thing is the Garmin Mk2s it will be interesting to see the development from apple on the software side. I hope they add technical diving features, and maybe some gas planning. The watches do look great, but I am a little worried about the durability, as apple watches don't have a good reputation in that area (the swim club do a lot of open water). The screen seems very clear and is probably the best selling point of the watch as a dive computer, especially in low visibility water like here in Denmark. It is their first try at a diving watch, so I would expect some lessons learned with this one, in short I expect some kinks and issues. It will be interesting to see what they do in the next iteration. I think it would be a very good watch for a beginner diver that also uses smartwatches heavily and have apple products. I do use a Garmin Descent G1 (non-solar) for now, which has been ok as a beginner and intermediate diving computer, but sacrifice a lot in looks.

If Apple graces us with deeper dive functions, I wonder if it would just be in an update or would you need a different, newer Apple Watch? I love the look of it. But, the limitations of depth I do not like, even though Im a recreational diver🤷‍♂️. As others have said, what if you get caught in down current and you end up deeper than this watch can handle? Additional stops I suppose, but......

Off topic: #askmark Any pro tips on the easiest way to don a BCD from a bench on a dive boat? At least 50% of the time I need to ask a buddy to help untangle my second arm. It doesn't appear to matter if I push my second hand or elbow through first. I've got too many dives under my belt for this not to be second nature. Thanks!
@ScubaDiverMagazine
@ScubaDiverMagazine Жыл бұрын
Yoga helps as well as preparation. Lengthen any adjustable straps to give yourself as much room as possible. I put my computer arm in first as the computer can get caught on straps. And then I either crouch to give my shoulder more room for the 2nd strap or lift the BCD on a single shoulder and lean over to get my 2nd arm in. With a BPW I fit an Agir Harpa Loop so that my left strap can be adjustable without any breaks

The worry about subscription plans is that they can raise the pricing anytime. Adobe have done this and you are at their mercy. It’s why many photographers and video creators have migrated away. With this app, you have no such alternatives. Additionally if you are living in a developing country with a currency exchange of 4.5 to 1 with the USD, then the subscription is crippling. I also wonder whether once you stop subscription due to age, illness etc, whether you then lose all access to your past logged dives and the sweet memories reviewing them would give you.
@mikevondebag

I honestly don't have a use for it as a dive computer. Still getting one at some point. However I'm 100% positive I won't be paying a subscription to unlock the dive app. I just don't have a use for it.

Traditional dive computers can last decades, and are designed to withstand a harsh environment and tough knocks. I think this tech is neat, but there’s no way I’m wearing this without some sort of protective case around the watch. That sapphire glass is going to get messed up if used frequently for diving.

#AskMark Hi Mark After doing some research I have decided to buy the Xdeep NX deluxe wing. I currently dive a single tank and will continue to for the next couple of years my question is should I buy a double with a single tank adapter or a single wing and upgrade when I’m ready thanks 🙏
@ScubaDiverMagazine
@ScubaDiverMagazine Жыл бұрын
If you're diving a single tank you need a single wing. When you progress onto twins you'll need to invest in a double wing. If you look up the 'Taco Effect', if you try to dive a single tank with a twin wing then the sides of the wing with air inside will float up around the single and make it tricky to deflate

Awesome review - very informative! I think it’s absolute crap Apple does not have a native app for diving and makes you subscribe to 3rd party software to use properly. For a watch marketed for diving, it is very disappointing. I wonder if the 2nd gen will rectify this. It would be like using a 3rd party app to make a phone call.

Serious Scuba app, overpriced gimmick or bit of both? Subscription based for an app most of us only use a few times a year? Disappointing to say the least when already purchased the hardware for USD800/Eur1000!😌 Besides, imho outright dangerous that this Oceanic app v1.0 won’t display (no-)decompression-info (after being submerged) below 130ft/40m! Because even in recreational diving to a wreck, at a wall a/o with currents an occasional short dip below certified depth is not uncommon but with experience and training nowhere near as dangerous as a computer NOT ALWAYS showing (no-)dec-time (like serious diving computers do). This requirement is a ‘must have’ not a legally-bound ‘nice to have’ an app-developer can simply lower in priority and exclude. #legalmadness If you guys really want to understand where the ‘Zürich’ ZH-72 model and ZH-L16C / ZH-L8ADT derivatives for dive-computers in more scientific details with background all the way back to Haldane tables for bell-diving, I can advise reading this: amzn.eu/d/ixa3mNG With Bradley I share more detailed ‘educated’ insights under their comments of: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mmqTm2OXl7l6oLM I want my 🤿 tech to be robust and fail-safe NOT failing ‘by design’ if the unexpected or occasional ‘legal’ exception happens. Just because of some legally bound firm restricting the perfectly capable ZH-L16C algorithm of prof. A.A. Bühlmann for use below 40m/130ft. This to at least stay informed and potentially NOT making the ill-advised/ UNwanted deep-dive situation for a 🤿 diver even worse by this 🌊 Oceanic app currently deliberately depriving a 🤿 diver under such conditions of vital (no-)decompression information. For the record, also this 40m/130ft limit was adopted from the 1960’s by emerging certification bodies such as CMAS, PADI etc. as the universally 🌎 accepted certified limit, to lower nitrogen (N2) related risks for recreational divers. On the other side, NO theoretical 🤿 limit can 100% protect you against these risks. Especially if your bodily characteristics a/o condition differs from the tested standard where most decompression models and computers are based on (i.e. healthy ‘army-style’ males). Really, I’ve witnessed fellow divers getting mild decompression sickness (i.e. bends) by only multi-diving for a few days in relatively shallow waters or N2 narcosis far from this ‘maximum’ depth-limit. To be very clear, I consider myself a risk-averse 🤿 diver. Yet we all know that 🤿 diving means taking calculated risks only for the suitably trained befitting our biological constraints (we’re not fish 🐠 after-all).😇 So Apple🍏 and Oceanic🌊 please stop ‘covering your legal bums’ by deliberately omitting vital and required (no-)decompression info also under ‘non-compliant’ but realistic real-life 🤿 circumstances. After-all nobody can predict the unknown, the unwanted and every 🤿 diver is responsible to dive within their personal abilities, knowledge a/o (as much as possible) their certification-level. Thank you! Anyway, as a gimmicky backup ‘show-off’ to my 15 year old wireless air-integrated Uwatec Air Z Nitrox, the Ultra with this app should do fine. This way only replacing my 1st 🤿 computer, a 1995 Suunto Solution at a premium price!😝 No wireless air integration for the Ultra is indeed a bummer anno 2022 especially with all the other radios this 🍏 watch already carries. As e.g. Uwatec-Scubapro implemented this in the past: for submersed wireless transmittance of air-mixture consumption, the radio technology needs to be different from in the Ultra already included GSM, LTE, GNSS, WiFi and Bluetooth radios. If I remember correctly a much lower frequency is required for this. This means yet another radio-tech needs to be added to an Ultra successor to make this work. But since this Ultra version seems to be aimed at only entry-level Scuba 🤿, I don’t believe Apple will ever add this 1990 radio-tech to their ‘Ultra’ successors primarily aimed at ‘Ultra’ activities for land-mammals?🌳 The limited battery capacity of the Ultra for general use and multi-day Scuba diving, I also don’t find this an “issue”. I simply accept this as a result of the abundance of innovative smart watch features this Ultra delivers, restricted by the current battery🪫 state-of-tech. If anticipated, I just bring my compact 10k mAmp 🔋🔋🔋 pack along with ⌚️charging puck on any multi-day trip when far away from 110V/230V ⚡️outlets, in case the Ultra (or mostly my iPhone 12mini for that matter🙃) has less juice than it requires in between multi-dive days. Finally on a positive note, NO other smart watch today includes soo many valuable features as this Ultra does. Yes delivering soo much diverse functionality the Ultra is quite ‘basic’ compared to some ‘specialty’ watches being only great at their niche (the 80-20 rule?). Yet, it’s great Apple 🍏 finally nudges these specialty brands to do better after decades of hardly any innovation a/o terrible UX, including the same ol’ same ol’ 💤 Scuba business since the great 🇫🇷🤿 inventor Cousteau. Factually, for real Scuba innovation, at least since the past century.🤓
