I took care of a psych resident who was on dialysis. It’s very hard in the body to do dialysis for years. He had a cousin who might’ve be a match and was sorta willing to donate. But the resident wasn’t qualified for the surgery because he had long history of being noncompliant with his medications. His guardian put him in a facility because he’d been hospitalized several times for being non compliant, not taking his meds and not following the recommended diet for kidney failure/ dialysis patient

Her dad was mega rich so she was on the list to get a new liver, but her liver couldn’t hold out long enough for a donor. Saddest funeral I’ve ever been to and it was almost 30 years ago. It’s not impossible to get on a list, but the average Joe won’t be able to afford it or have the necessary connections to get on it. I somehow doubt the characters in these stories have that kind of money or connections.

Years ago I heard of a case where a woman had wrecked her liver from drinking, so she wanted a chunk from her non-drinking sister. The woman hadn't even quit drinking yet. I remember a reddit post about two brothers who had a similar story. One was the golden child and the other one was an outcast. After years of abuse, the moment of karma happened. The Golden Child needed a transplant since his life of excessive partying and hoeing around finally took a toll on his body, while the other brother was married, with a good life and with little to no contact with his family except his sister. Even IF she wanted to donate she doesn't qualify BC she's pregnant! I know a guy who died BC he didn't have a living donor and wouldn't give up drinking so the People in charge of donations wouldn't put him on the list. If I was Alice the only way I would even consider is after I've successfully delivered and I knew I wasn't planning on having more children 🤷🏼‍♀️ siblings of any age are not "spare parts" and should have autonomy without the risk of their family judging them or pressuring them!

I would have said that the baby is more worthy because at least the baby has a chance at to being a good person when the little sister is too rotten to the core to be redeemed. If you’re pregnant and donating a kidney, don’t do the procedure. Period. Any doctor in their right mind will say, “no, it’s not a safe procedure if you are pregnant”. That’s why health forms ask if you are pregnant and sexually active. It’s to both prevent risks and monitor risks.

I had leukemia in 2016, and it was thought that I might have had to have a bone marrow transplant. My older brother was the only family member that could be tested for a match, but it came back negative. The doctors told me that even family members are usually only about 25% possibilities of being a match. Luckily, I responded to the chemotherapy, and am still in remission. (They found three people that were a match for me, an American, an Australian and an Isreali)
