I've watched your videos for a little while now and am about ready to try my hand at installing one myself. Just today I purchased a "used" plastic corrugated culvert that is 46 inches tall, 24" at the lip and 20" inside diameter between the ridges. My question is this -- this one already has about 12-15 holes drilled into the sides at various locations (it was used for composting) that are 3/4" upto about 1 1/4 inch diameter. Should I try plugging the holes with anything or ignore them as this will be almost completely buried when finished? Thanks in advance and thanks for the helpful videos.

Hi Chuck, what are some reasons that a person would choose to use one of these super deep basins instead of the standard ADS basins? I have a flat yard and need to make a drop on a French drain that will be in flat ground over 50 feet distance. Can I make enough gravity fall using the standard ADS basin?

Hey Chuck. This is racking my brain. I need to put a similar sump in about 8’ down. No augers I can find go that deep. How do you dig a hole like that? Thanks for your great videos.
@jericlocke12 жыл бұрын
You dig as deep as you need. I hand dug a little over 8 feet down tghrough the worst back fill of red shale and then clay. Some of the jagged rocks were 2' around. It was literally hand digging rock by rock in some sort of real life tetris in reverse. Some of the sharp rocks cracked CMU blocks. There was no weeping tile only old corrugated downspout right above the footer. At first I thought it was perfoorated but no.

Is it necessary to cap the bottom? Can culvert pipe sit on filter fabric and gravel directly?
@appledrains3 жыл бұрын
We would suggest that you cap The bottom. Pumps are very powerful and can pull dirt from under your culvert. This will create erosion along the side of the culvert. So if possible yes you should cap the bottom

@@appledrains That was one answer I needed today. 18" Dbl wall is $300 for 10' plus delivery of course. I used a blue 50 gallon plastic drum and a steel one on top. I'm about to anyway. I cut the bottom of the metal drum and have a lid for it. I will join them together with 40 mil subseal. I put a thick coat of rust stop paint on metal barrel after sand blasting the rust off. I' 8 plius feet below grade in a bathtub of clay.

I thought you were going to address FDM sump basins. I really like them. You can pump more than just the 10 inches or whatever the pump switch activated at. His horizontal sumps will move a lot more water each cycle. I never understood why they even make basins different sizes, when all pumps have about the same switch travel.

I have a question. I have a room that’s built into a hill. From grade to footer is 6’ deep. The room in 18’ wide. Could I have a hole dug and put a setup like this in the ground and I was thinking of drilling a bunch of holes in the 18” pipe and surround it with gravel? I was hoping to avoid trenching the entire room. I wonder how wide of a space it would grab water from?

@DavidBrown-ek6ls7 ай бұрын
You said the inputs need to be higher than the sump pump. Why? If you are draining a rising water table that threatens you cellar floor and foundation, wouldn't you have holes all around to let water in at several levels (with screens around the outside to keep the dirt out). The water coming into the culvert pipe would fill it from several levels. The float switch would shut the pump off if the water level got too low. No?
@carolgreen2204 Жыл бұрын
Why does the inlet pipe need to higher then the pump

The pipe you're using for the basin is very expensive
@jagboy6910 ай бұрын
You wanna see an expensive sump, check out the frenchdrainmans screaming demon. To be fair, it is a bad ass sump pit. His sumps lay horizontal underground and offers a big increase in capacity. When the pump float moves 5inches of travel, the pump removes twice the water compared to a vertical sump pit. THIS is the secret to long pump life, less starts, longer run times. Less times your power bill takes that large starting amp in rush. It saves you money! It better, because that guys sump pit is 1400bucks with a pump! He also preaches no check valve because they always fail. With an increase in capacity, you can afford a little bit of water running back to the pit. I like chuck here, but those 38dollar pits are junk, super flimsy cheap garbage. Good for basements.... Nah I wouldn't use one there either.
