History of iMessage

Hey guys it’s Greg with Apple Explained, and today we’re going to explore how iMessage has evolved since its release in 2011 and how it contributed to Apple being in a sticky situation with the US government. iMessage is essentially a replacement for SMS that works between Apple devices. Like all great instant messaging platforms, it allows users to send and receive messages, stickers, emojis, images, and all sorts of attachments using WiFi, ethernet, or mobile data. In its current form, iMessage works any on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch running iOS 5 and up or any Mac with OS X Mountain Lion and up. You can register your account to your phone number like SMS or to your email address

iMesaage was also a competitor to BlackBerry Messenger - BB has BBM which was very popular and Apple wanted someting like BBM but for iOS devices.....and they did it.

It just works better, Android messaging applications have been historically very cluttered looking and slow. The subtle animations as well as built in iMessage apps and stickers are a nice touch as well. The one big difference Android does have though, being able to theme the messages app.

I worked in cellular sales for 2 years, and I never installed 3rd party messaging apps out of the box, none of my customers requested that, and most didn’t even know what they were. Some regulations in other countries keeps consumers from trusting/using iMessage, so apps like WhatsApp (mainly popular in China/India) were popularized in overseas markets, but hardly (if at all) here.

iMessage bubbles were green and sms blue on iOS 7 on my 5S. It got reversed later it seems. I prefer green as the older skeuomorphic bubbles were green and the blue ones feel less mature in my view.

I used to have an iPhone and while iMessage is convenient when available, there's something to be said about not having access to features such as read receipts that you have by default on Android. It's kind of relieving not having to worry on whether or not the person that I'm messaging has looked at my messages along with the fact that sms can send with the smallest amount of data.

@@swalloniagamesvlogs2347 iMessage is the equivalant of many messaging apps, such as Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Signal, etc. But the main advantage is both it and SMS are built into the stock messages app on iOS, iPadOS, and MacOS. And it can be used across all devices just like other apps. Some advantages of iMessage are memojis, Apple Paying friends and family through text, sending uncompressed video and pictures up to 200 MB, etc. It was one of the first to launch, and is one of the main features that keep users locked into the Apple EcoSystem. Android has it's advantages on a lot of other features, but for most who do own iPhones, iPads, etc. they work just fine.

I live in Germany and i mostly use Whatsapp to comunicate. I want to use iMessage but almost none of my friends use it, because they prefer Whatsapp. It would be great if iMessage would include support for Whatsapp, Telegramm, Facebook, Messanger, etc.. So you can text people Whatsapps over your iMessage app. Then i could use one app for both services.

I love iMessage. I have both an iPhone XR and MacBook Air so I can write messages on the MacBook and if I have to head out, those messages are available on my iPhone without any issues. Plus, I can text those with Android even from the MacBook!

Not enough people use iMessage sadly, but my boss and also a few friends use iMessage, sadly no-one uses FaceTime even for just audio, the quality is so so much better. But now with iOS 12 calls to iPhone users will default to FaceTime, so this should convince people to use FaceTime more.

In Asia and in the middle east People use iMessage just as an SMS receiver and messages from companies etc. Most people use Whatsapp as their primary messaging app even if they have an iPhone. They just think iMessage is useless...

one huge reason why some IOS users choose to use other massaging apps is that they want to contact other users outside of IOS bubble lets say you are a friend group of 5 and only 3 use Apple you would still want to make group chats with your 2 other friends that dont use iPhone thats why most just get facebook messenger and dont worry about if there message will get delivered to everyone and they just use that one app to call and communicate

If iMessage had accumulated 63 quadrillion messages per year, how is WhatsApp and Messenger DESTROYING IT? Also Android user kinda suffer from it, not being able to view or play iMessage stuff like the message effects or iMessage games. DonTheDashyOne -GD- Android is more popular than iOS. Messenger and WhatsApp are cross platform while imessage is iOS exclusive. Since most people have an Android, they use WhatsApp or messenger and kind of force iOS users into using them instead of imessage. That's why WhatsApp and Messenger destroys imessage in terms of people using it.

Hey Greg, I just bought my first iPhone, and I love it. But one thing that stands out to me is the lack of customization's in the iMessage app. Apple offers a lot of Gifs, stickers, etcs, but no way to change your background color or incoming and outgoing bubbles for messages, which kinda sucks. Makes for a very boring text messaging app. AND a lot of the 'extra stuff' only works between iPhone users. Will Apple EVER offer such customization's for the text background, font, and bubbles? I really don't want to switch to a third party app.

I’m from Mexico, a lot of my contacts have iMessage but I don’t know why every time I text them via iMessage they reply via WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger instead of replying via iMessage, like if they don’t like iMessages so I basically don’t use it.

my dad switched from iphone to android in like 2014/15, and when the imessage didn't deliver, i just held down the message to send through sms. after that my texts always sent as sms.

For me, the list is as follows in order of usage: 1. WhatsApp 2. Allo 3. Facebook Messenger 4. KakaoTalk 5. IMessage/FaceTime I myself live, in Denver Colorado, USA.

I use Google Hangouts to communicate over video games. However I still use sms (through Verizon Messages) to communicate with my family (some aren't as tech savvy).
