I like Thunderbolt 4 a lot, but I have to admit that I don't like the physical plug itself. I've seen too many Mac laptops where the jack has become a little loose over time, and all you have to do is breathe on the thing to cause issues. I wish they would have adopted a more robust form factor. Traditional USB kinda sucks now, but those cables stay put.

Been around tech for MANY decades and speeds are always increasing, but only occasionally is it enough that you actually notice it in everyday use. Now Thunderbolt 4 using that expensive cable was a speed increase I could see, not for everyday tasks, but for when I have to move a lot of data to setup a computer or copy a hard drive. So I probably won't notice another speed increase until Thunderbolt 7 or 8.
@AppleInsider10 ай бұрын
Thunderbolt 4 didn't really increase speeds. Same 40Gb/s cap but they made requirements more stringent and allowed for more downstream ports. yes, there are active vs passive cables but that has been the case for a while. Thunderbolt 5 literally doubles these speeds on Thunderbolt 3 and Thunderbolt 4. I think twill be a huge upgrade.
@tavenner078 ай бұрын
So will the added bandwidth move data faster even if the port isn’t properly designed for it? Like, obviously a tb5 port and cable will increase data transfers to a greater extent, but if I put one on my enclosure to my Mac Studio, will I see an increase in r/w speeds? Also, if things aren’t fitted for tb5 will it produce extra heat? Genuinely asking as I am trying to wrap my head around how rapidly the world is changing.

How much power does a monitor need? Will this finally be enough to run a high end monitor off one single cable for data and power?
@AppleInsider10 ай бұрын
It totally depends on a variety of factors. How many downstream ports are on the monitor? What *kind* of ports are they? What resolution is the monitor? What's the refresh rate? With Thunderbolt 5, you can run 3 4K monitors at 120Hz with just a single cable.
@unknownuser06910 ай бұрын
So ... typically monitors are NOT being powered over Thunderbolt... just bandwidth for data display. It is more likely that the Monitor will power the laptop. Right now I have my work laptop computer connected to a BenQ via thunderbolt... and the monitor powers the laptop, and connects to my headphones, keyboard and mouse. The BenQ has a KVM, so when I swqap to my Mac ... the mouse and keyboard go with it, but it still powers my work computer. (My Mac is hooked up to a Samsung OLED monitor which powers it...)

iVanky should have just used Display Port as it's Royalty Free. HDMI licensing can run up to $10k a year. Sounds trivial but shipping a $500 dock with 2.5Gbe is almost embarrassing.
@AppleInsider10 ай бұрын
Yeah, it's definitely a choice but as the end user, I prefer HDMI. I hate that most docks have Display Port because I rarely use it. HDMI is so much more common, but I know the licensing fees add up.
@gregorymoore28779 ай бұрын
@@AppleInsider HDMI is inferior to DisplayPort in every way that is important. It costs more to include. Image quality is lower. You can't daisy chain with it. And about the power, from what I see even now TB 4 cables can support 240W, plenty of certified such state it in their specs.

Not really, but there are a lot of variables to suss out here. Most ethernet is gigabit Ethernet (1000Mb/s). Thunderbolt 5 is 80Gb/s or 8000Mb/s. That said, you can get faster ethernet setups but you need faster ports on both sides plus the supported cable. One win for Ethernet though is range. Thunderbolt is only like 3 meters while Ethernet could traverse your whole house. So really just depends on your setup and needs.
