Application Layer, known as Layer 7 or L7 firewalls are capable of inspecting, filtering and even adjusting data up to Layer 7 of the OSI model. They have visibility of the data inside a L7 connection. For HTTP this means content, headers, DNS names .. for SMTP this would mean visibility of email metadata and for plaintext emails the contents.
Understanding how L7 firewalls work and how they differ from more traditional L3, 4 and 5 devices is an essential fundamental skills for anyone in the networking, security or general technical space. In future videos i will be stepping through how AWS implement L7 firewalls into their product set.

Great video ! I've a question, does the normal firewall which operate at the layer 5 is what we call a "stateful" firewall ? And the previous one (layer 3-4) a "stateless" firewall ?

Sorry for the necroposting, but I have just watched the video (a great one btw, you're very good at explaining and presenting!) and had the same question. So iptables is considered a level 5 firewall since it can track connections?

I noticed you're saying Haych for H, when you mention HTTP. This made me curious, and distracted me from the whole presentation, because I needed to look up who says that. In case anyone else was hit by that, it's some people in Ireland. I do appreciate your time put into this though, I did come back to watch the whole thing again.

?? HTTP is an acronym.. H is pronounced Haych.. how else should i say it ? I'm not trying to be a jerk, but i genuinely don't understand how else i could say HTTP

the short answer most of the English speaking world pronounce "h" like aych, while some regions say haych.

Does the application firewall inspect http response as well? Like WAF does?
