What does the Bible say about a marriage ceremony, a marriage license, and sex making you married to someone in the eyes of God? According to the Bible, here are 5 points to consider.

Wrong. Your understanding of the original language words is pitiful. The sexual behavior called into question was deceiving someone or abusing someone sexually. You absolutely cannot JUSTIFY God's telling David that if Saul's wives and concubines weren't enough he would give him MORE by YOUR interpretation. And spare me that "culture" excuse. God bent a great many "culture" cues, but not this one? Sell that to somebody without a brain, okay?

What does the scripture say A marriage is between one man and one woman and God where was the public vow between Adam and Eve there was not one It was between him and his wife and God The scripture states a man shall leave his family cling to his wife and they become one flesh.. Public display is good but that is not needed It does not do anything. If you don't get married through the state but you have a public vow before a few people and the person is corrupt that does nothing The state doesn't recognize it still no more than God wouldn't recognize your commitment when you say that you make a covenant with him and each other

I think the conversation that more people need to be having in this case is the fact that in those days two people got married in a much different process than we do today. Today, we put emphasis on dating and saving up for a wedding before we actually are married. That’s puts a much greater time frame on it. It was different in Bible times. Much simpler. Also what needs to be talked about is how past relationships and sex can effect a future marriage, even a godly one. Much better to let God clean your soul up before marriage.
@greglovelace246
@greglovelace246 10 ай бұрын
Agreed, brother. It was less on looks and more of women and man coming together for GOD. And when both were godly, you had obligations to each other and simply loved and trusted each other because you had more devoted believers. This is why GOD spoke about getting with a woman of the same belief. You can find everything you need in the holy word. He also speaks on clothing and not putting sin in others' hearts by doing these vanity things which happenned even back then. Makeup and painting your skin is looked down on by god. It's in the book , but even women believers won't listen to it. Evil has crept in the minds of our family and a real godly marriage is rare to find and it just gets passed on to the kid in a endless cycle but each generations there's more outlets for evil so it all gets worse, worse and worse each generation. We are creatures of habit, and evil is enticing to us, even in small unspoken ways. Let's start at the roots and get with the opposite sex that desires to be holy for god. If you dont do that, it will end badly. Leave the unbelievers to their style of relationship and get with those who believe. You'll be able to tell a difference in the two, but with sin still in the believer, it's still hard. Echo of a lie over time, and now there is sin everywhere.

Also remember that for much of Biblical history (and history in general) marriages were not love matches, nor was there much freedom of choice in the matter, especially for women. Often times the couple did not even know each other beforehand. It was, to be somewhat vulgar, a process more akin to animal breeding than what we call marriage today. Marriages were used to seal treaties and business deals, to expand the family holdings, and yes, to keep the line going. The woman herself was simply the tool to achieve all this. For a contemporary example, look at the marriage of then-Prince Charles and then-Lady Diana. We all know NOW what kind of marriage that was; but it was very conveniently forgot or ignored at the time that the Royal Family had been concerned for some time about the fact that Charles was still not married even though he was in his late 30's early 40's and he needed to find a suitable bride ASAP to produce the required "heir and a spare." Not just any one would do--they needed a maiden mare with the right conformation and breeding to put to their prize stud, and Diana fit the bill in a way Camilla did not. We all know the end of that story. So yes, that kind of thinking is still around. And it would 100% fit in with the way marriages are described as happening in the Old Testament. Isaac needed a wife because he too was pushing 40 and Abraham needed grandchildren, so Abraham sent his servant (not Isaac himself!) back to the old country to find a wife for Isaac from his own family line (shades of the Hapsburgs!). The servant sees Rebecca, says, yup, this looks like the one, she's doing everything I asked God to show me how I would know, and so he and Laban sit down and negotiate the bride price (another thing we generally don't do these days either). They summon Rebecca, tell her what's what, ask her does she want to go with this guy she doesn't even know to a place she's never been to marry someone else she doesn't know, and she says yes. Now, did she really want to go, did she have good reasons to leave that we don't know about, or did she, despite being "asked", really have a choice? We don't know. All we know is that she went off with the servant back to Abraham and married Isaac, who "loved her the moment he saw her". Did she love him? Did it matter? Obviously not to the writers of Genesis because they don't mention her loving him, only him loving her. Whether they all lived happily ever after well you can read the rest of Genesis and draw your own conclusions from that. SO, if you want to live by the rules of a 2,500 year book, that is fine, but understand that we no longer follow many of these rules and customs. We, for the most part, do not arrange or pressure our children into marriages; we allow them to choose their own spouses. We generally do not marry back into our own family trees; we are far more open to interfaith, interethnic or interracial marriages than they were in Biblical times; and we no longer require bride prices or dowries or any kind of "marriage fee". We do not require widows to marry their late husband's brother in order to raise up children in the late husband's name; we do not require kinship redemption (as in the case of Ruth); and of course we generally do not allow polygamy either. The only thing that we DO allow now that they practiced back then is surrogate motherhood (see Hagar); we're just more sophisticated at it. And by the way, marriages were not only universal, they happened at a much, much earlier age for girls at least than they do today; shortly after puberty. So premarital abstinence lasting decades was virtually unknown. Check it out. There are numerous examples of women in both testaments who desperately prayed to have children (to be precise, sons) but there is not one woman who prayed Lord, send me a husband. She didn't have to. All these things (and more) were part of Biblical marriage. I can, if you want, cite book, chapter and verse. Yes, marriage in Biblical times was simpler. Do we want to go back to that? Then we will have to get rid of so much, starting with courtship (dating) and the idea of marrying for love. There was no such thing as individualized romantic relationships; it was a family and community matter. There are places in the world today and even in the US where people still practice arranged marriages within their own communities; but to do so requires a degree of separation and isolation from the rest of society that I don't think many people who were not brought up in these cultures would tolerate.

@@theresemalmberg955 I’m catching your drift here. I believe you’re mixing up the ancient Jewish culture of the days and the message of the Bible on marriage itself. The New Testament writings of Paul are clear on marriage and seem to have had an effect on how marriage is seen in some parts of society. I don’t believe too many have fully grasped this concept. In order to do that you’d have to first believe that God can ordain marriage, from that standpoint then God would actually bring you a wife and vice versa.
@theresemalmberg955

@@cdrumz I don't doubt that the Bible puts great importance on marriage. Still, it seems very odd that there is absolutely no description of what makes one married rather than living together. Adam and Eve did not have a wedding ceremony nor did they exchange vows. So what constitutes a valid marriage in God's eyes? Many people have wrestled with that over the ages. What about common-law marriage? When you are living on the frontier and there isn't anyone who can stand in for either church or state, what is a couple to do? Now the Catholic Church defines a valid, sacramental marriage as the following: marriage between two non-Catholics or even non-Christians, whether conducted by a clergyman in a house of worship or before a judge, is considered a valid marriage. So if one or both decides to convert to Catholicism they don't have to get remarried in a Catholic ceremony. However, if a Catholic marries someone who isn't a Catholic in a non-Catholic ceremony, that is NOT considered a valid marriage. This is important because the Catholic Church does not allow remarriage after divorce. But it does allow remarriage in the case of a church annulment which simply says, yes, the couple may have gone through a ceremony but it was not valid. (There are also civil annulments). The annulment process is very time consuming and it is up to the church to decide whether this marriage meets the criteria of valid or not valid. The most famous case was that of King Henry VIII and his wife Katherine of Aragon. Why does all this matter? Because the Catholic Church takes the words of Paul and Jesus very seriously. There is one exception to the no remarriage after divorce rule and that is the "Pauline Privilege". It applies to marriage between a baptized person and a non-baptized person. If the non-baptized person wishes to go their own way, Paul says, they can, and the baptized partner is free to remarry if they wish. But it only applies to non-baptized persons. If a Catholic wishes to marry a divorced Protestant then the Protestant must seek an annulment of their marriage through the Catholic Church. As you no doubt can probably tell, I was raised Catholic, so it's not just a matter of how you get married, but who you CAN marry. If one takes what Jesus taught on remarriage after divorce seriously, then that knocks a whole lot of people out of the marriage pool. It is why many Catholics end up leaving the church after getting divorced because if they can't get their previous marriage annulled then if they don't want to live single the rest of their lives, they have to go somewhere ese where the rules are not as strict. I have noticed that while many Protestant churches stand very firm on things like no women pastors (citing Paul's words on the subject) I am not aware of ANY that forbid divorced people to remarry and I suspect that that is because they know full well how well that would go over in the pews.

If we are going to talk about marriage, we ought to start by defining it. Like Jesus, we must start with God’s definition as He defined marriage from the very beginning (Matthew 19:4-5). I contend that God’s constituents for marriage are very different from what we, as a post-modern American society, would identify as essential components to define a marriage relationship. It might surprise us to consider that the very first marriage, in fact the most perfect earthly marriage, was not begun in a church building. There was no clergy, priest or preacher to perform the ceremony. There was not even a wedding! or a dress! There had been no courtship, no first kiss, no engagement or ring. There was no government to issue an official certificate of marriage. Yet, this is the foundational example that Jesus points to in order to teach about the nature of marriage (Matthew 19). So, if God does not define marriage by a church building, a license or a wedding ceremony; How does God define the constituents of marriage? God says there are three things which constitute a marriage. Leave. Hold Fast. One Flesh. Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. AKA MARRIAGE. (Genesis 2:24, ESV) If one of these 3 are absent it is NOT a marriage. Therefore having sex with just anyone IS FORNICATION. Having sex with your partner that you HOLD FAST to, that you left your family for and that you became one flesh with is YOUR WIFE OR HUSBAND IN THE EYES OF GOD. A marriage ceremony and certificate is great and SHOULD BE DONE BUT ITS NOT NEEDED TO BE MARRIED IN THE EYES OF GOD.

You cannot use this to define marriage because it does not take into consideration that an unmarried girl is the property of her father. If any man were to have sex with her without her fathers approval, then he has damaged the fathers property and must pay her father the same amount of money as if he were to pay her father a bride price. So, today, the father of the bride has to approve the union for it to be valid. There needs to be an exchange of value because a man buys his bride. Then they must come together and consummate the marriage. THEN it is a marriage in the eyes of Yah!

indeed, because if you go on and believe the sweet sounding lie, that when a couple have a sex, they are now married, that makes a couple, both man and woman, guilty of fornication which is a sin that according to multiple verses, will end you in hell unless confessed to God and stopped/ corrected. Who ever preaches that sex is a binding element, that forms marriage, is of the evil one, tempting and seducing people into accepting the wide way to end up destroyed....be vigilant..

Not sure that example counts. God says we are to generally submit to governing authorities unless it requires us to sin. But God does not require anyone to submit to non-existent government authorities. At the time of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, what governing authorities existed in the Canaanite area were more in the city-states, with rural areas such as where Abraham lived only sparsely populated with no unified government jurisdiction. Abraham and his family’s marriage practices would have been dictated more by cultural tradition than law because there was no national government around in Canaan to enforce it. The same cannot be said for the world we live in, with almost every square mile of land on earth currently under the legal jurisdiction of just a couple hundred nations. Submitting to governmental authority is simply not applicable where there is no or virtually no governing authority that exists. But it is relevant for Christians today.

have you thought about getting officially divorced from your second husband or are you already divorced? How do you reconcile it with scripture that tells us to not divorce unless sexual sin ( cheating, i guess) and for wife not to leave husband unless he dies? means, if we ever marry again, that marriage doesn't count in Gods eyes and also your new husband is now sinning, by being with a woman, who is an adulteress. ? I don’t have all the answers. Adultery is not just about sex. I believe that adultery is that which we do against God . We cheat on God every time we sin. we choose ourselves. We choose worldliness. The world as we know right now is run by the ruler of the age, the devil. I am not married at this time. The second marriage almost destroyed me and my children we were getting physically abused as well as emotionally and mentally and financially drained. The commandment says you shall not kill. This man was killing our spirits and eventually would’ve taken our lives. I do not see in Scripture how God would have it in his will for his people to stay in such abusive toxic environments. He freed the Israelites from a toxic environment.run by a narcissist. The issue was they seem to want to go back to that though he had just set them free. They also made other gods. I seek the truth. Whatever is God’s will is my will for my life. I don’t have all the answers. All I know is I love Jesus and he comes first in my life now.

I have been exploring this topic lately and I find it conflicting. When I looked at the Bible verses (using chat GPT) for a quick pull. There is absolutely no reference of ceremonies, witnesses outside of God Himself or contracts. I believe marriage today turned into a business, many marry for the wrong reasons such as malicious intent to gain another person belongings, to divorce there is also a business aspect of it involved and even if the couple is ready to take the steps to be married they now have to wait to save up to have the traditional ceremony or wedding along with everything else. To me and I’ll continue to ask the Holly spirit for more guidance, marriage was made by God therefore what he established is what honors it, essentially a covenant in front of his presence.
@KatieBenson19
@KatieBenson19 26 күн бұрын
I think that there is a few references of ceremonies and witnesses. We see from the beginning that Adam and Eve were able to communicate directly with God which made him a witness of their marriage. We see the example of the wedding feast in Matthew 22 which was a type of public ceremony. There is also many examples of witnesses to a marriage in the bible. Though they are not your typical witnesses like we have today they still know the marriage is happening. For example, Genesis 24:1-10, 24:58-60, Malachi 2:14.

I agree with a public marriage, but get married by a pastor in a church with a marriage certificate, not a state issued, state controlled license. The state is a 3rd party to the marriage and it is shown as they hold the original license, not you, at least in my state. I'm hearing about Christians who do this to keep the marriage between them, God, and their spouse, not the state. Something to consider.

The other ppl is for when u want to leave and religion isn’t a strong enough reason to stay together. It don’t say no where that you must publicize the marriage. Number 5 is so important. Many men who are afraid of divorce laws argue, that they don't need to report their marriage to the state, because they are married before God. I believe that people who hold this opinion are living in sin, because they do not want to be legally committed to their partner. It seems they violate husband's love your wife like Christ loved the church. If you don't want a state marriage certificate, because you are afraid of the legal advantages it gives your wife then you need to ask yourself if you are getting married for biblical reasons or not.
@romscar77

This is not specifically to Juan Duenas but this reply fits under his reply topic: To add with agreement and from a different perspective: The institution of marriage in today's western world is now an unconscionable contract. Where either party can, at will, dissolve the contract with no repercussion from the governing law. And actually encourages one party to behave poorly. The societal checks and balance of the legal contract have been neutralized. As a result, we see divorces are down. Why? Because marriages are down. We have the influx of men forgoing the idea of lawful marriage because of extreme bias in Family Law (Family Law is not to be confused with Constitutional Law, 2 different jurisdictions). However, there does seem to be a balancing out by the judges because enough time has gone by that they've seen 1st hand their loved ones get raked over the coals and ending themselves... OVERWHELMINGLY one party more than the other. Ask me how I know. Again, unconscionable. The definition of a license is to have permission to do something that was previously illegal. What would be illegal? Tax code advantages (Also very questionablely legal). What does inviting Man's Law into a personal relationship and a God's Law institution do? I suppose one would be physical protection (by force). Another could be a compelled redistribution of resources (keep in mind that there no examples of any position that either sex can't do or perform in our western societies). And if one party can't (or won't) make ends meet, the state will gladly hand out resources. Both for the here and now. For what was designed to be the church's responsibilities and purvue, the church (as in us, the people) seems to have, by and large, lost its testicular fortitude and is all to willing to concede when things get uncomfortable. Remember! We serve the same God who called for death for adultery. And the same God who ordained and orchestrated the entire annihilation of people groups. That includes the women and the children. Talk about uncomfortable! That's the same God I seek. AND thank God Almighty we now live in a time of grace. So we have many problems that are hard to digest and reconcile. (dissonance much? Lol) We have a society that encourages the use of judicial system for gain. (see also: Briffault's Law) We have man adding conditions, policies, rules, and laws to scriptural teaching (Pharisees) We have a church that is derelict of duty (invite the church to the wedding but not the divorce. Which by the way is permitted by hardness of heart. Not adultery. And divorce was never intended but was made allowable by God) We have an unconscionable law document (exceeding the limits of any reasonable claim or expectation; not conforming to reason; unreasonable; inordinate; extravagant). We have the conundrum of an old (tried and true) set of societal rule books with checks and balances in exchange for a new set. The feminized set (open hypergamy). God instilled in us a hierarchy and governance guidelines in the masculine. One could argue that it is sinful to deviate from that by the 1st commandment. That our way is better than God's way and therfore we are taking the place of God. We now have 3 generations of men (God's ordained leaders) being essentially castrated in purpose. Protection (for men and women): law enforcement gets called instead of the church's men, or a brother or uncle. LEO's have hard decisions and are in the heat of it. All men bad right? (See also: Deluth Model) We have humanity's inate hind-brain hardwire (aka Evolutionary Phycology and Evolutionary Biology). Delve into that for more uncomfortable truths of underlying human behavior. Especially when it comes to reproductive imperatives of the sexes. The 3 P's: Protection, Provision, Parental investment. We have somehow held onto the notion that even though the 'equal but weaker vessel' can't, by their own agency, better their station or circumstances. But it's not a matter of can't. More like (generally speaking) won't. Turns out men and women are different, by design, and on purpose. Our "Western World Society" has made every concession to make egalitarian opportunities, even to the extent of unfairly hindering. Some parting thoughts: I do love The Lord Our God. I seek Him and abide as much as I humanly can. I very much try not to be a stumbling block. We absolutely need to have differing opinions and interpretations (as iron sharpens iron). I believe in the idea and ordination of marriage, just not 'the how' we do marriage now. Marriage is wonderful example of our relationship with God and for raising children.

No scriptures to back up anything you’re saying. These are your traditional beliefs. Gen 2:24 does have the word publicly. There’s no scripture that says say your vows out loud in front of people. Being married to your wife is not like being a mayor over a city. What should people who can’t afford a wedding do? Not marry? A private ceremony doesn’t count? Where’s the scriptures? So basically the community has to justify the marriage in order for God to solidify the marriage 🤔. You can be married without ceremony. Show me in scripture, not your traditional cultural beliefs.

There is sin involved and so forth the relationship isn’t pure so they never are officially dating, because the church won’t bless a relationship in sin. Now this couple goes and gets married with the state in secret. So they come back to the church community and now expect everyone to honor this deceitful thing. Does God even honor this kind of marriage. Does it still count cause a secular judge said they are married?

She believes she doesn't need a state marriage nor a State divorce to be married to another man. At first she said she couldn't divorce her first husband because she didn't know where he was. It's my understanding that's not the case at this time because she now has knowledge of his location. Her first husband committed adulty, which frees her to marry another. Apparently, she no longer feels it necessary to dissolve the first marriage through a state divorce.

10:01 Hes saying that a judges ruling in divorce is "just". But thats again non sensical. Judges are ruled that murdering a baby is legal and indeed a womans "right" to do so, which of course is an abomination-romans 13 is only speaking of governing authorities in general terms but is in way declaring all the actions of govt to be right bc otherwise God will would be authorizing 65million babies to be murdered in the US alone. So then proper ethical conduct is not inter-related w/ judicial decrees but only from the word of God. If a judge then grants a woman to receive more money than what she is deserving of, she have become a thief and not court ruling on this earth will change that. She would have to give what she had improperly received from husband and in the very least return the amount back for her to be forgiven. Re:1 , sex doesn’t make you married, but cohabiting as a man and woman would, in Jewish tradition at Jesus’s time. This had a social connotation that implied intentionality: the same intentionality that marriage has to have in order to be right in God’s eyes (as Pastor Mark explains in the next points 👍🏻)

what about when the family around u are pharisees and the person who was going to marry u turns at the last min, starts manipulating both bride and groom, asking for more favors in order to marry them? Can persecution happen at the same time when ur tying to get married? when ur convicted not to go thru the govt bc of how wicked it has become, and in that particular circumstance u had to say your vows before God at that time, and make it public after, does it count? We have prayed to find a pastor who will marry us in a church without govt. (I should mention, in our situation God told both of us separately that this is ur husband/wife in 2018 and we have held onto that for yrs and it only produced good fruit and we lead each other closer to God but when we tried coming together in offical public ceremony we got persecution.) Would like to know honestly, did God honor those vows in prayer when it seemed like we were in the middle of a huge spiritual storm? There was an abundance of peace in the midst of it and I have felt that God heard us and made a way when there was no way at that time. Feelings can be deceitful tho. As of recently we have heard of someone who would marry us in a diff state and we will go with it if God allows it to work out. I'm just asking if God would have honored what we said and prayed back then? I pray a lot and it seems that I get confirmation that He's with us I just don't want any lying signs or wonders either .

6:20 You have absolutely zero proof texts for this; only indirect customs expressed biblically but in no way is there a direct command biblically which makes your definition of an invalid marriage completely and soundly erroneous & nonsensical. You've lived very likely a comfortable and pollyannish type of life which is apparently the lens w/ which you eisegete you're misapplied texts thru. *When dealing w/ those who have lived terrible lives, unlike yours, where their has been generational severe poverty, generationally passed down habitual reinforcements of prostitution, drug abuse, and the like there very well may be not "community" or friends to witness such a marriage service and nor is biblically required anywhere in scripture. So your improperly imposing your pollyannish religious presuppositions upon misapplied proof texts. The minister officiating the wedding would be witness enough and their covenant is verified and witness before God.*

Nice job of giving people an excuse for having casual sex. Your interpretation of Exodus 22 is the exact opposite of what it means. It says if you have sex with a virgin you must marry her. Meaning you must stay with her. Your whole point seems to obfuscate the reality that God sees no distinction between sex and marriage. You mentioned that the word fornication exists because it’s possible to have sex and not be married-but that’s missing the point. The point is that when you have sex, you SHOULD be married. The conclusion is that you must stay with someone you have sex with and that you shouldn’t have sex unless you intend to stay together to begin with. Sadly, your video will continue to make worldly Christians feel like they can have sex and it’s okay. Be careful what you’re teaching.

what about bf/gf who genuinely love each other, are living together, having sex but gradually coming to belief to God of the Bible and wanting to do things right aka in His way...? In my understanding, they should definitely stop having sex...maybe even start to live in separate houses...What would be your input here?And if they keep clean sexually and confess to God this genuinely, and have their hearts to obey Him, would that be OK (= acceptable by God) to get married properly ? Or they should never see each other again?

The man in Exodus 22 has a duty to pay the bride price for virgins and marry her, but she is not required to marry him-her father can refuse and still keep the virgin bride price. This would seem to indicate that sex is not marriage, because it allows the woman to marry someone else and her father to be compensated for not being able to receive the substantially higher bride price for virgins when she does.

I don't understand your points when considering Laban, Jacob, Leah, and Rachel. In this biblical account, Jacob works for Laban for 7 years to get Rachels's hand in marriage and does so, but after their wedding feast Laban substitutes Leah for Rachen in drunken Jacobs's bed, they have sex and now Leah is Jacobs wife, not Rachel, this is even more poignant because if Jacob and Rachel were married based on a ceremony and not sex, then Jacob and Leah would both be adulterers, and the punishment for this would being stoning to death, yet they werent because they were married. Based on the sctiptures you reference it seems more like biblical marriage is indeed sex alone, but the issue is that once a man and woman have sex(outside of rape and incest which are condemned as acts of sexual deviancy) they then need to consider themselves married and act accordingly and inform the community as such, and the sin comes from not doing this(having sex and not considering youself married and informing the community, such as with prostitution), which coincides well with the ancient definition of fornication, which doesn't really reference sex before marriage but rather any and all sexual deviancy including adultery, which makes sense since a lot of the same words translated to fornication in Heberw and Greek also point to them being words used for spiritual fornication or Idolatry of which sex inside, out, before, or after marriage as no place since in this instance it is entirely a spiritual thing rather than physical. modern marriage ceremonies seem more like they were developed as a way to address all this in one go, rather than to take away sex as marriage, and then the truth got lost in the weeds of time. since if you look at modern marriage it crosses all the "T"s and dots all the "I"s so to speak in following scriputre on how to properly conduct oneself in regards to being married. that being its in front of the community, everyone(including the bride and groom) acknowledges the two are together now, and then you have the ring to make sure it's not a secret from anyone, and then the actual marriage is when the couple has sex. and as far as I know this is exactly how it is in catholicism, that being that even with the ceremony and everything, a couple is not married without the couple's consummation of the marriage(except in specific cercomstances)
