I applied it for mines last week. I just needed to sign some papers from the courthouse, get a photo from CVS for a passport, my birth certificate, photo ID or driver license and have two separate money orders or check, they won't let you use cash or debit card. I'm from Alabama so have to wait either 8-13 weeks or the expedited one that is 60 dollars more that is 5-7 weeks. Of course I chose the 5-7 week because I'm going out the country in August.

While you can still apply (if you can even find a post office that is accepting applications - many are not), Department of State is recommending waiting unless you need to travel for emergency reasons. So I'd wait a few weeks and then check again.

Just so people are aware: The cost of the passport has gone up since this video as has the forecasted wait time. It’s currently $130 for the book, $30 for the optional card, plus $35 acceptance fee. The $35 goes to the place you go to in person to, the remaining fees go to the U.S. State Department. Also, the current wait time is forecast as 8-11 weeks, but they are currently running about 8 weeks, if not a little less. I fully recommend getting the card if you have not upgraded your state ID to Real ID standards. The card is Real ID compliant for when the new ID requirements for domestic air travel and government buildings finally kick in next year.

The appointments are so backed up where I live. I had no choice but to do a walk in at one location that was the only one available within a 50 mile radius. When I got there the line was all the way out the door. Literally. I sat in line for 6+ hours. While in line I was talking to the people in line and they informed how they had appointments at different locations but they canceled on them smh. But thank you for all the information. This helped me so much. The guy at the window was happy how I came prepared. I took my photo at walgreens. I paid $649 for me, my wife, and my 9 year old son. I was able to pay for everything with a debit card. I got expedited for all three of us with standard shipping. But the expedited is 5 to 7 weeks.

Some post offices will also do the photo for you for $15. Mine did and i choose to do it there. I just choose the small book as I dont do a lot of international travel. Thanks Maneesha. This is my experience: I live in the City so i had to do a bit of a maneuvering to get an early two (2) day appointment at this post office (45mins drive away but worth it). Smooth, easy and very professional service. I applied on 4/28/2022 Passport card arrived on 5/19/2022 Passport arrived on 5/21/2022 (exactly 3weeks). I used the expedited service. Thanks.

True but there's no substitute for experiencing a foreign country. You can also visit destinations like Puerto Rico, US Virgin Islands, Guam or Samoa without a passport. It's also easier to travel to Mexico and Canada. You can get a passport card to visit those countries by land or sea for much cheaper than a passport book

It should be noted that many passport centers, including post offices, can also do the photos as well, you just need to select the photo option when booking your appointment. In these days of Covid skipping going to someplace else to get the photos first might make it worth it to do everything at once.

The one step that I would add is that I would make sure that the post office does passport photos and if they don't you can go to Walgreens or like Walmart to get your photo for the passport and don't wear white for the passport photo

Update: Timelines are now 10-13 weeks for routine; 7-9 weeks for expedited if you applied after March 24, 2023. Previous timelines of 8-11 weeks for routine; 5-7 weeks for expedited are still applicable if applied from Feb 6, 2023 - March 23, 2023.

@@sadeoyates2112 If you have an out of state ID then you would need secondary documentation. If you have an in state ID then that should be fine but bring secondary proof of id. Though I do recommend going to the DMV and getting a new card to your current address. If you were to go on Friday it would be 7-9 weeks but you can get an appointment 2 weeks before your travel if you have proof. There is even life or death for immediate family if you have such a need. Life or death also requires proofs of travel and the appropriate records.

Go with the standard timeline but you can always get it expedited or add it later. Do not add expedited until it is too late.

I got my passport in 2 weeks. I applied for my child supposedly expedited but it’s still being processed as of today. Lesson learned: even when they tell you that you can apply simultaneously with your child, don’t do it if you do not have the certificate of citizenship. It will save you the hassle of worrying for what they need. It should have been a straightforward application but I guess that they love to complicate things just like US politics.

So my advice for those that do not have the certificate of citizenship is just to file using the regular process because it will still be slowed down when they ask for more documentation. Use the expedited process only if you are sending the certificate of citizenship unless you are willing to fork the money over regardless of the speed and outcome.

The process is soooo annoying! I had everything except a photo copy of the front & back of my ID. Good thing I watched your video & was able to get copies made before I arrived. Thanks for the tips! Great info! Thanks so much. You should add that these rules also apply for adults whose last passport was issued when they were under 16 years of age. As far as the government is concerned, you have to apply for a new passport. For proof of citizenship, however, you can use the old passport.

Thank you for this and other informative videos. I got naturalized in May 2021 and applied for passport and passport card on expedited service Oct 22. I mentioned I intended to travel in 8 weeks. It got approved/issued/printed on Nov 19 and delivered on Nov 25. I still haven't got my Passport Card and Original Natrualization Cert but they must be on the way in separate mails. The only negative is the their status page. I gave my email and phone number for notifications on status changes but got nothing at any stage. I had to fill the status page every time and track status. It only had 3 status changes - accepted, processing, approved. Even USCIS tracking system is way better, detailed and used to send me text/email messages. Also, it would be nice if they gave USPS tracking details once approved. Thanks again for helping other immigrants and citizens.

Yes there is a video she did about renewing a passport. As long as it has been issued in the last 15 years and is not a child or 5 year passport you can renew by mail.

Update: In 2023, the standard fee for passport Book is $130. $35 execution fee. $60 for expedited process. Total $ 225 if you choose to expedite your passport.

Depending on where you live, you might just be able to walk in to the post office and they will take you. When I got my passport I just went with all the required things, eight days later I got my passport in the mail. It came so fast I thought the State Department had a problem with my photo, and sent me a rejection notice. Edit: I did not pay the expedition fee.

Mine currently processing a travel agent told me If they received it on 5/27 which they did it should be approved on or before 7/8 (six weeks) that was they exact text. I really just hope it’s here before 7/16 because honestly this is too long for expedited and express shipping. When I heard and saw previous people passports come back on time like at exactly 4 weeks with no express shipping to anything. Right now all we can do is pray and hope they can get it to us at a convenient time that we need it. 🙏🏿

Its takes a really long time to get them to process your passport. I sent my passport for renewal on Feb 24, I get a status update Apr6 saying they received it and are reviewing, another email in the afternoon saying its been approved and I should be getting my passport back Apr 12. If you dont want to wait almost 2 months, do expediated for an extra $60.

Got my done without a problem. Just go to CVS or Walgreens to get your picture taken. Was in and out in less than 5 minutes and talking to the passport guy was around 10 minutes. Took a few checks as back up but didn't need them. You are the best!!! 4/27/2023
