Watch as Dan illustrates his method for applying oxide to the feet and base rim of a coiled bonsai pot before applying wax to repel the glaze as it is poured on subsequently.

I'm hoping to try using iron oxide, it gives the clay a really nice colour!

Lovely Dan, let me a question, which kind of wax do you use?. And does it spoil resistance of the oven?. Thanks for sharing your videos. I'm in the Bonsai world thanks to your book in the late 80's. Xec, from Menorca.

Hi, I use a wax emulsion that is available from most pottery suppliers and it is not at all harmful to the kiln/oven. Glad my book has been of some use to you.

I want to see the whole process. From clay making to step by step bonsai pot making and pot fire burning and painting. And my question is that after the color is burned or before?
@danbartonslifewithbonsai745

If you want to see the whole process you will need to join a pottery course as the processes take several weeks as all stages require different treatments.

Very interesting. Is the iron oxide for aesthetics or does it serve another function?

Could you explain why you apply the oxide? Is there an especific reason?
@danbartonslifewithbonsai745

The reason I use the iron oxide is to give a dark colour to the bottom of the pot and to the feet - it's purely for aesthetic reasons

What cone do you fire your pots at?
@danbartonslifewithbonsai745

I don't use cones - I use an electronic controller available from most pottery/kiln suppliers. I fire to 1260 C
