Another one of these videos! While it's not to say they're rushed, these Vinland Saga videos definitely don't take as much time as most of my other videos do, so I thought this could be something good while I wind down the other projects I'm working on (which you'll all hopefully see very soon).
Interestingly, looking at this video now I think it's pretty evident that as far as my turn-of-the-first-millennium knowledge goes, I know a lot more about the kinda stuff that was going on in Britain and Ireland than I do Scandanavia lol.

My favorite historical detail in Farmland Saga was when Thorfinn fought Snake. The revelation that Snake was a former Vangaraian from Myklagard/The Great City (Constantinople) was huge. That means that a Roman Viking that served in the Byzantine Emperor's Royal Guard fought an Icelandic Viking-turned-slave that served in the Emperor of the North Sea's Royal Guard. It felt like something from a Nordic poetic epic, yet such an encounter could have totally happened during that historical era, for all we know.

Personally I geeked a little bit out when Ketil drew his sword and we saw the 'ulfberht' inscription, because it fits that even though he doesn't really fight, a wealthy man like Ketil can afford a high quality sword. I also recently bought a magazine for an article about historical cloth weaving in Greenland and Iceland and got exited when I realized the thing we see Ylva work at in S1, the weaving frame, where she also has her emotional breakdown in episode 5, seems to be historically accurate.

honestly i think that's for the best. having a social life and an actual job is better than obsessing over numbers and rushing to make video after video to get views as fast as possible and become "trending". Trust me, i'm talking this from experience and after being 7 years of doing stuff on YT i'm still getting nowhere.

I love your content, and would very much enjoy a second channel where you only discussed history that interested you. Some might suggest that I find other content creators who already do those types of videos, and I have watched many from such creators, but I think your perspective would lend itself well to historical videos as well. Either way, I think your videos are excellent, and I am looking for to whatever you decide to do next.

We had a guest speaker that specialized in colonial America re-enactments come talk to our students last week and while that isn’t the same as medieval Vikings, he did specifically mention folks only really using spoons to eat and no forks and the reason he gave was that since they didn’t have dentists back then folks, especially poor/working class, needed to be careful with their teeth so “they ate a lot of mush”. Why risk biting into an apple when you can make it into applesauce?
@fionafiona1146
@fionafiona1146 8 ай бұрын
I don't like the explanation because apples will turn into mush on their own and the modern strains and refrigeration neccersary for a crisp apple experience outside of September weren't really a thing, great way to get the point across though

A historical mistake that I think only appears in the anime is the inclusion of an Icelandic magical stave when those appear MUCH later in an early modern grimoire. It’s kind of understandable since the symbol has been totally absorbed into neopagan symbolism and other viking media though.

As someone who is completely out of touch with just about everything anime for years now, my initial take that I have been operating on for several months now was that Vinland Saga was like an arc in Attack on Titan? And I clicked on this video under that pretense like where is Mikasa and Armin? Armin looks rough now.... where is the annoying tattooed boy? I've officially gotten to the Steve Buscemi "how do you do fellow kids?" meme age. I have never even watched AoT! I clicked because of the history lesson!

As someone with an art history minor who has actually studied some Medieval art and manuscripts, I absolutely love that more than half of this video was discussing the subject. I mean, I still have no interest in Vinland saga, but I respect that they drew on actual historical objects and facts (as we know them) for the visuals.

You might take an interest in another content creator I watch on KZbin and occasionally Twitch. Ludohistory is the name; it’s a medievalist and vikingologist examining games through the lens of academic media analysis. It’s adjacent to the Vinlandsaga videos, and it would be fun to great a vikingologist’s take on the manga and anime.

This is all really cool information, though you're kind of making it sound like they googled 'middle ages english book' and put the images they got into the show. Wasn't Snake explicitly reading old man the gospel in the manga? Strange that got cut with them stretching a few 10 page segments to whole episodes. Or maybe it just didn't come up yet.

@@g76agilmao just because you love something doesn’t mean it can’t have bad parts and by all means it was boring yes we did get good development on Thorfinn but we also got almost half a season of nothing substantial happening just bits and pieces of where we are going. Then when stuff finally does begin to kickoff we have to stop for multiple episodes to get the background and focus on characters no one knows or even cares about. Still love the series but I’m not a dick rider like you I can admit when something I like or even love is lacking.

@@MNOIYTD And yet people hate farming arc precisely because of that message and idolize Askalad for the wrong reasons despite the fact he himself stating that he is a horrible human being. Even with the express purpose of media that try to depict the life of Vikings as brutal and horrible, dudebros still end up glamorizing and idlozing Viking shit. So thanks but no thanks. I am so sick and tired of the oversaturation of Viking and Norse shit in modern media. It borders on fetishisation and white supremacy.
