An update on the Little Lights project 2 weeks after the raising. We have installed the sills and sub flooring and the plasterers are getting started. In this video I walk through the structure and point out the different structural elements of a traditional Ishibatate Japanese timber frame.

The idea it's simply floating there scares the shit out of me looking at the ancient structures keep in mind they are resting on stones with complex joinery above

Hey man, I'm from the UK and have been a wood machinist for 3 years here. I really want to move to japan and have been thinking about teaching english on a WHV but I'd prefer to apply my trade. Where could I meet/look for someone about a Joiner/carpentry job or apprenticeship? Would it be difficult to get one?

Hey Jason...!!!...Someone sent this to me tonight...LOL...because my Japanese is so much better than yours...(NOT!)...Loved watching and would love to meet someday! I've been designing and building in these modalities for 40 years...Love to see the next generation expanding on the wonderful globally connected world we now have and hopefully you will make better...You manner reminds me a lot of Mr. Chickadee of KZbin though unless you know him...he never speaks in video...LOL...but I'm sure you have seen his work...

Are the posts doweled into the granite base stones? I may do something similar but I was planning on doing it on an ICF foundation wall. I'm also in an earthquake zone.

Great video! ..Would you mind explaining the dimensions of the nuki tie beams? Are they 1inch x 6 inches? Thanks!

Is the average building/home constructed this way in Japan? Could not even imagine if we did it like this in the US

This is very impressive! Would you say this is typical Japanese construction? Or is this more of a high-end type of thing?
@Neverstopbuilding
@Neverstopbuilding 2 жыл бұрын
Today it is rather high end and unique, but in the country it is still practiced, and typical of older times.

How are these frames braced laterally when there is no bracing?

@@Neverstopbuilding Another question. Why are the two roof beams where the scarf joint is not aligned?
@chipbservice7446
@chipbservice7446 3 жыл бұрын
@@gary24752 Are you asking why the scarf joint is not aligned over the center of the post? Aligning directly over the post actually reduces the strength of the beam. This is considered best practice in both western and eastern timber framing.

the nuki is the shear bracing, the thin wooden slats between the posts, on which the bamboo lathe is attached. They are pegged very tightly
