As a fellow CFI and having landed there a number of times I can tell you that your flight is a good lesson both on radio phraseology and airmanship! The transitioning over LAX, HHR and approach to the "aircraft carrier runway", as some people call it, is outstanding. I flew there often from RIR (Flabob) and it was always a thrill !!

Over the last day I basically watched all the videos, really great! This might sound bizarre, but I never realized how beautiful California is. Loved the trips around the state.

Never done a trip in the west coast but that seem like a good trip, now why go thru the pain of a transition routes when is so much easy just to go ifr. Great video!

Thanks, that was a fun trip. It's always amazing to me to fly right over a busy airport like that. The smog does get bad sometimes but I've noticed it getting better and there are many days where it's very clear and just beautiful.

This was one of the best examples of airmanship I've seen on youtube. Of course, I just saw at the end that you're a CFII. It's amazing how many people you see on here with terrible radio skills and such. Extremely well done! Are you going to stick to instructing or are you moving up the food chain? Either way, it's obvious you were very well taught. Great job. I'm a 100+ hour PP finishing up my IR. Really enjoyed it.

Nic evid. I especially like the LAX overfly. I went to L.A. for the first time on March 21. From the air it's beautiful city. But when you get low into the smog layer you can't see it anymore. That's too bad.

That's odd. At 4:42 in the video, when you're overhead, LA Tower says "radar service is terminated", but they don't tell you to squawk VFR. I've never head one without the other before. Later, controllers are asking you to ident, so they're clearly still tracking you on radar. So, I'm wondering what was up with the "terminated" bit.

I think the thing that most impresses me is understanding all of the radio communication and the hand-off's that are occurring between the towers along the way. I would be afraid I would miss something. Hats off to you for having mastered this all!

Is it common practice to get a squawk code departing Whiteman? Did the controller at Whiteman give you the code because you said you were planning the mini route, or because you were taking off on runway 12 headed straight towards the charlie, and that's just usually what they happens?

Nice video, nice demo of procedures to get throught the vfr corridor in LA LA land, very useful for us pilots who don't live/fly in SoCal. Thank You. Makes this much less intimidating for me. We love Catalina, and want to fly there. We are from N.Cal.

You only get a squawk code when you're going to be handed off to other towers (going through their airspace). LIke through BUR or VNY. From Whiteman if you were making a left downwind departure to the practice area you would not get a squawk code and would stay at 1200.

I'm trying to do this in my SIM. You are talking to SOCAL, how do I locate them on my map? I'm trying to set up the flight in the FMS. I just wanted to be as close to your route as possible. Also is there ever a time during the flight that you are on autopilot?
@FullSwingMedia
@FullSwingMedia 9 жыл бұрын
If you go to skyvector.com and click on the Los Angeles TAC chart you'll see boxes with white background, blue borders and blue text around LAX that will tell you what frequency to use. It depends on where you are from LAX. Also the TAC chart will give you the specs for the Mini Route, on the left side of the chart. The plane we were in didn't have auto pilot but since this was such a short flight I wouldn't have used it anyway and definitely not while going through Class B airspace!

Thank you! I will follow your instructions and work on learning more about flying. I'm learning the rules as I go. So now I have to fly this route entirely without autopilot. I'm going to keep doing it until I have it mastered. Thank you again.
